Huddle explicitly offers contents insurance to renters, and Huddle Black is its highest cover tier. It can cover your belongings—not the building or your landlord’s property. Whether it suits you depends on the policy limits, excesses and exclusions, so check the current Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), certificate and personalised quote before deciding.
What Huddle Black means for a renter
Huddle describes contents insurance as cover for belongings owned by people who rent a home, including furniture, electronics, bicycles, jewellery and sporting equipment. Black is available for contents-only policies as well as home-only and combined home-and-contents policies. Huddle positions it above Comprehensive, with additional benefits and higher limits. Check Huddle’s current product information and the policy documents for the terms that apply to your quote.

This is not building insurance: it does not insure the structure or your landlord’s belongings. Huddle says its products are not designed for landlords. The insurer is Huddle Insurance, a business name of Open Insurance Pty Ltd, acting on behalf of The Hollard Insurance Company Pty Ltd. Huddle recommends reviewing the applicable PDS, Financial Services Guide and Target Market Determination before buying. Huddle’s disclosure documents and product information
What may be covered—and the conditions to check
Flood and rainwater
Huddle says flood is covered for home and/or contents policies, subject to conditions. A 72-hour restriction applies after first buying cover or after a gap in cover, with a continuity-transfer exception. During that period, increases to the sum insured are not covered for the specified events. For each flood event, the applicable excess is the higher of the basic excess you selected and a fixed $500 flood excess. Read the PDS wording for the precise event definitions and exceptions.

Accidental damage
Accidental damage is included with Comprehensive and Black, but that does not mean every mishap is covered. Huddle identifies scratching, chipping or denting from normal use as excluded examples. The PDS sets out the full exclusions and claim conditions.
Theft, replacement and other benefits
CHOICE’s policy review lists theft and attempted-theft cover, subject to exclusions, and new-for-old contents replacement, also subject to exclusions. It says a claim may be settled by repair, replacement or payment, within applicable sums insured and sublimits; cash settlement conditions vary by claim type. These are secondary-source descriptions, so confirm the current policy wording before relying on them. CHOICE’s Huddle Black policy review
Item limits can matter more than the total sum insured
Your contents sum insured is not necessarily the maximum payable for every individual belonging. Category sublimits and per-item limits may apply, and Huddle says some valuables can be individually listed on the certificate. Its FAQ gives examples for bicycles and portable musical instruments: up to $1,000 per item, set or pair under Basic and $2,000 under Comprehensive. Those examples do not establish the applicable Black limit; check the current PDS and your certificate.
CHOICE lists the following limits for the policy it reviewed. They are secondary-source figures, not a substitute for checking the current policy documents:
Rank #3
| Category or benefit | CHOICE-listed limit or condition |
|---|---|
| Jewellery, artworks and collections | Up to $10,000 per item, set or pair, subject to an overall limit of 20% of the sum insured |
| Digital media | Up to $2,000 per item, set or pair, with a $5,000 overall limit |
| Visitors’ contents | Up to $5,000 |
| Spoiled food | Up to $2,000, with a $100 excess |
| Pet cover | Not included |
| Overlapping cover at a new home | Up to 14 days |
| Moving house | Fire, collision or removal-vehicle overturning, up to the contents sum insured |
Huddle also says jewellery, watches, collectables and media have flexible limits depending on cover level and may be individually listed. Portable Valuables Cover is an option for items taken away from home. Check whether your particular item needs to be listed, what evidence of value is required and whether the portable option covers the places and activities relevant to you. Home Assist is limited emergency assistance
Huddle describes Home Assist as a 24/7 service provided by Allianz Global Assistance with Huddle Black Home, Contents or Home and Contents policies. It covers ten listed emergencies and allows two call-outs per 12-month membership, with up to $300 including GST off each eligible call-out. It is not an unlimited repair benefit; check the service terms for eligible emergencies, costs and conditions. Huddle’s Home Assist information

How much does Huddle Black cost?
There is no reliable fixed premium to quote for a renter from the available published information. CHOICE says it scored the policy on cover only because Huddle does not share price data. Finder’s published average for comprehensive home policies is not a renter-specific contents-only Huddle Black quote, so it cannot tell you what your premium will be. Get a quote using your address and required sum insured, then compare the same cover settings with other policies.

How to decide whether it fits your needs
- Estimate the value of your belongings. Make an inventory and use realistic replacement values so the selected sum insured reflects what you would need to replace.
- Identify high-value items. Check each item against the current per-item and category limits, and ask whether it needs to be listed or needs Portable Valuables Cover.
- Read the conditions that matter to your situation. Review flood and waiting-period terms, accidental-damage exclusions, excesses and claim settlement provisions in the PDS.
- Get a personalised quote and compare like for like. Use the same address, sum insured, excess and optional cover settings when evaluating alternatives.
- Verify the final documents. Before purchasing, confirm the limits, listed items, excesses and selected options on the certificate and ensure the policy wording matches what you need.
Insurance terms, limits, excesses and optional services can change. The PDS, certificate and quote applying when you buy are the documents to rely on; general information is not individual financial advice.
