Ethereum staking and ETH burning are separate protocol mechanisms. Validators stake ETH to help secure proof-of-stake consensus and may earn rewards; EIP-1559 burns the base fee paid by transactions. Whether ETH supply grows or shrinks depends on the balance between issuance and burn—not on staking or burning alone.
How does Ethereum staking work?
Ethereum uses proof of stake. Validators commit ETH and perform consensus duties: they check proposed blocks, attest to the chain, and may be selected to propose blocks. Their stake gives those actions economic consequences. Honest participation can earn rewards, missed duties can reduce rewards, and specified provable misconduct can lead to slashing—loss of some staked ETH.

Staking is not a fixed-interest account. Rewards depend on protocol conditions and participation, and operating a validator brings technical and key-management responsibilities.

What happens to ETH gas fees?
Each Ethereum transaction pays a protocol-determined base fee per unit of gas. The fee adjusts according to gas use in the parent block relative to the network’s gas target. EIP-1559 burns the base fee: it is destroyed by the protocol rather than paid to a validator.

A transaction may also include a priority fee, commonly called a tip, to incentivize inclusion. The block proposer receives that tip. The base fee and priority fee therefore have different destinations.
Does Ethereum burn ETH, and does that make it deflationary?
Yes. EIP-1559 burns the transaction base fee. This reduces ETH supply relative to a scenario without that burn, but it does not establish a permanent supply cap. Ethereum also issues ETH, including through validator rewards.

- Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- If base-fee burn exceeds issuance over a period, total ETH supply falls over that period.
- If issuance exceeds burn, total ETH supply grows over that period.
So ETH is not guaranteed to be deflationary. The burn mechanism also does not guarantee an increase in ETH’s market price.
What are the main ways to stake ETH?
Ethereum.org describes several routes. The right choice depends on how much control you want, whether you can operate infrastructure, and what provider, custody, and exit risks you are willing to accept.

| Route | ETH threshold | Who operates validators? | Control and exit considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home solo staking | At least 32 ETH for a solo validator | You | You operate dedicated, internet-connected hardware and manage validator and withdrawal keys. Rewards are protocol-paid; you control the validator directly. |
| Delegated staking | Depends on the service | A provider | Less operating work, but you depend on the provider and its terms. Key control and withdrawal arrangements vary. |
| Pooled or liquid staking | Some pools accept smaller deposits; ethereum.org gives 0.01 ETH as an example, not a universal minimum | Pool operators or service providers | You may receive a token representing your stake and rewards. Contracts, operators, pool rules, liquidity, and redemption terms matter. |
| Centralized exchange staking | Depends on the exchange | The exchange or its operators | The exchange holds custody of the ETH, so access and withdrawal depend on its service and policies. |
Before choosing, check who controls the signing and withdrawal keys, who runs the validator, how rewards are credited, and exactly how you can exit. A transferable pool token is not a guarantee of instant redemption at a fixed ETH value.

Ethereum enabled withdrawals with the Shanghai/Capella upgrade in April 2023. Withdrawal behavior depends on a validator’s withdrawal credentials and status. Ethereum.org’s guidance, updated following Pectra in May 2025, distinguishes two credential types:

- Type 1, legacy credentials: the validator’s effective balance is capped at 32 ETH. Eligible balance above 32 ETH is automatically swept to the registered withdrawal address.
- Type 2, compounding credentials: a validator can compound its effective balance up to 2048 ETH. Withdrawals below that ceiling can require a manually triggered partial withdrawal.
Pectra also enabled exits triggered from the withdrawal address. The exact procedure depends on the validator and current Ethereum guidance, so consult the official withdrawal documentation before taking action.
Pooled-staking holders generally follow the provider’s redemption process or sell their pool token. Redemption may depend on pool liquidity and validator exit queues; a token’s market price can differ from its redemption value.
What can go wrong?
- Validator downtime: missing duties can reduce rewards.
- Provable misconduct: specified harmful validator actions can result in slashing.
- Key problems: signing keys are used for validator actions, while withdrawal credentials direct funds. Losing or exposing keys can disrupt validator duties or compromise access to funds.
- Pool and provider risks: pooled staking can add smart-contract, operator, custody, liquidity, and redemption risks beyond the protocol’s own validator rules.
Staking and fee burning affect ETH economics in different ways: validator participation is tied to consensus and issuance, while transaction base fees are burned. Keeping those mechanisms separate is essential to understanding why supply can rise or fall.
