Huawei Ascend is a family of AI processors—not one specific chip—built on Huawei’s Da Vinci architecture and used in its Atlas AI computing systems. Depending on the model and system, Ascend processors are designed for AI inference or training in devices, at the edge, and in data centers.
What does “Huawei Ascend” mean?
“Ascend” is the name of Huawei’s AI-processor family. Huawei describes Ascend as the compute foundation for its Atlas infrastructure, which includes modules, accelerator cards, edge stations, servers, and clusters. Those systems are intended to run deep-learning inference and training across device, edge, and cloud deployments. Huawei describes the Ascend 310 as a heterogeneous AI system-on-chip (SoC) based on its proprietary Da Vinci architecture, intended for terminal and edge deployments. Huawei publishes a peak figure of 16 tera-operations per second (TOPS) at INT8 precision for the Ascend 310. How is Ascend used in Atlas products?
Ascend processors appear in Huawei’s Atlas AI infrastructure in different forms, from accelerator cards to larger systems. For example, Huawei documents the Atlas 300I Duo inference card as containing two Ascend 310-series processors. That makes it a concrete example of Ascend hardware in a physical accelerator product, rather than a general-purpose desktop chip. Huawei’s Atlas 300I Duo support documentation identifies the card and its processors.
Before selecting a card or system, check the model-specific documentation for host compatibility, interface, physical dimensions, power and cooling requirements, and supported software. The fact that a product uses an Ascend processor does not establish compatibility with a particular computer or workload.

How have Ascend models developed?
Huawei says it launched Ascend 310 in 2018 and Ascend 910 in 2019. At its Ascend Computing Industry Development Summit keynote on August 5, 2025, Huawei discussed deployment of 910C and announced plans for 950, 960, and 970 series chips.
