You don’t need to add a physical microphone to a Samsung keyboard. Voice typing is a software feature: choose a voice-input provider in Samsung Keyboard settings, then tap the microphone control while the keyboard is open.
Choose a voice-input provider
On a Galaxy phone or tablet, open Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Voice input. Select Samsung voice input or Google Voice Typing, whichever is available and suits your needs. Samsung voice input works only with Samsung Keyboard; Samsung’s settings also offer Google Voice Typing. The documentation does not establish that one provider is more accurate, private, or faster than the other. Samsung’s keyboard-settings guide and its voice-to-text guide describe the options.

Settings and labels can vary by device, country, and software version. If the path differs on your Galaxy, use the Settings search to look for “Samsung Keyboard” or “Voice input.”

Turn on the microphone control and dictate
- Open Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Voice input and choose a provider.
- If the option is unavailable, open Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default and check that the relevant voice-input option is enabled. Samsung’s US guide also identifies Keyboard button on navigation bar as a setting to check.
- Open a messaging app or another text field so Samsung Keyboard appears.
- Tap the microphone icon and speak when it is active. On first use, you may need to accept terms or grant permissions.
Samsung describes the feature this way: “Samsung voice input allows you to convert your voice into text messages.” Samsung Support’s voice-to-text guide covers first use.

Find the microphone if it is missing
The microphone may be accessible from the keyboard toolbar rather than where you expect it. Samsung Canada documents enabling the toolbar in Samsung Keyboard settings and lists Voice Input among its controls; depending on the interface, you may need to expand the toolbar. - No microphone icon: Confirm the selected/default keyboard and voice-input provider, then check the navigation-bar keyboard button and the keyboard toolbar.
- Samsung voice input cannot be selected: It is available only with Samsung Keyboard. Check whether Google Voice Typing is offered instead.
- Nothing happens on first use: Look for a terms prompt or a permission request.
- Your dictation language is missing: Return to Samsung Keyboard settings > Voice input. Check the available offline languages; if the language is offered as a pack, install and enable it.
A Samsung Community reply describes long-pressing a keyboard or navigation control to select voice input, and another community tip suggests assigning voice input to a long-press of the spacebar. These are device-dependent suggestions, not guaranteed steps; the official settings routes are the better starting point. Samsung Community discussion, created August 15, 2026.

What to expect across Galaxy devices
Samsung’s documented routes are not identical on every Galaxy. The available settings and screens can differ by model, country, and software version, so a missing label does not necessarily mean the feature is absent. Search Settings for “Voice input” if the menu path does not match your screen.
