If an HTMLCSStoImage screenshot is blank, first check that the request is rendering the intended input, then give delayed content time to load. Try ms_delay: 500 and increase it if necessary. For pages whose load time varies, use render_when_ready: true and call ScreenshotReady() only after the content you need is ready. Those are the main remedies in the service’s blank-image troubleshooting guide.
1. Confirm the API is rendering the content you expect
The create-image request accepts html or url as its input, with CSS optional. Use one input, not both: if the request includes url, it takes precedence over html. For a webpage screenshot, supply a fully qualified public address, such as https://example.com/page. These checks can uncover a request that is capturing a different page or markup than the one you are debugging. See the API usage documentation and parameter reference.

2. Wait for slow content before capture
HTMLCSStoImage waits for the page’s load event and monitors additional network traffic before capturing. As its troubleshooting guide explains, “We do this by waiting for the pages load event to fire.” That heuristic may still capture too early if JavaScript, external stylesheets, images, or other content you need loads slowly.

Try a fixed delay first
Set ms_delay to 500 as a starting diagnostic, then increase it in measured steps if the content is still missing. The value is a delay in milliseconds before image generation. A fixed wait is straightforward, but it cannot reliably accommodate pages whose load time changes between requests. The documented starting value and timing behavior are in the troubleshooting guide and parameter reference.

Use an explicit ready signal for variable loading
If a fixed delay is inconsistent, set render_when_ready: true. The renderer then waits for the page’s JavaScript to call ScreenshotReady() before taking the screenshot. Place that call after the asynchronous work and assets that must appear are ready; signaling too early can still produce an incomplete image. Unlike ms_delay, this approach requires you to add readiness signaling to the page.
3. Check wait limits, viewport, and media type
If timing adjustments do not solve the problem, verify that the rendering configuration fits the page:

max_wait_mssets the maximum wait before capture; the documented range is 500–10000 milliseconds.- Set viewport width and height together to the dimensions needed for the layout you expect.
- Choose
media_typedeliberately: the documented values arescreenandprint. Print styles can produce a different page appearance from screen styles. - For URL screenshots, custom headers may be used subject to the documented origin restrictions. They may matter if the page requires same-origin authentication or another request header.
The documentation describes these settings but does not identify any one of them as a usual cause of blank output. Check them as configuration variables rather than assuming they are the problem.
4. Check whether a white-looking result is actually transparent
A viewer may display transparent pixels against white, making an image look blank even when transparency is intended. HTMLCSStoImage supports PNG, JPG, WebP, and PDF output. For a transparent background, its FAQ recommends PNG with transparent_background: true. If supplying background CSS as a separate API parameter, send it through css; CSS placed only in a <style> element inside the HTML may not provide the intended result. See the FAQ.

5. Keep signed image URLs and API credentials secure
If you are debugging a signed image URL, the signing guide describes an HMAC SHA256 token generated from the query string using the API key as the secret. Perform signing on your server and do not put the API key in browser-side code. Treat a completed signed URL as sensitive too: anyone who has it can request the image it authorizes.
