HTML.to.design for UX Research: How to Save Website Layouts as Figma Files

Use html.to.design’s Figma plugin for public URLs, its browser extension for logged-in or state-specific pages, and the File tab for supported local captures.

To save a website layout as editable Figma layers, use html.to.design’s Figma plugin for a public URL. If the page requires a login, is on a private network, or must be captured in a particular browser state, capture it with the html.to.design browser extension and send the result to the plugin. You can also import supported local files. These are vendor-documented workflows; an import is a visual reference, not proof of exact rendering fidelity or validated UX research.

Choose the right way to bring a page into Figma

Route Use it when What you need
Plugin URL import The page is publicly accessible and the URL represents the page you want to inspect. The page URL and the html.to.design Figma plugin. The product overview says it supports importing a page or pages in bulk. html.to.design product overview
Browser extension capture The page requires a login, is private or local, or depends on a browser state such as a solved CAPTCHA or selected language. A supported Chromium-based browser with the extension installed. Extension documentation
Local-file import You already have a saved webpage, archive, email, or html.to.design capture file. A supported file; the vendor recommends `.h2d` when available. Local-file guide

Choose based on access and state control first. A public URL is simplest; use the extension when the browser can see something the plugin cannot fetch from a public URL. The extension can transfer a capture by sending it to the plugin or saving an `.h2d` file, and the vendor’s blog also describes a clipboard workflow. Extension capture guide · html.to.design blog

Import a public webpage by URL

  1. In Figma, open the Actions menu, search Plugins & widgets for html.to.design, and run the plugin. The vendor guide recommends starting in its Web tab. Official usage guide
  2. In the Web tab, paste the page’s public URL.
  3. Choose the available import settings that match the reference you need, such as viewport and theme, then start the import.
  4. Inspect the result on the Figma canvas. Treat it as an editable starting point and verify important text, spacing, imagery, and layout against the live page before using it in research or design decisions.

The product overview describes URL imports and bulk page imports. Product materials also list options such as multiple viewports, light or dark themes, local styles, auto layout, missing-font handling, multilingual imports, and prototype-related features. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent guarantees that each site will convert perfectly. Product overview · Product features

Capture a page that depends on browser access or state

  1. Install the html.to.design extension in a compatible browser. Its installation guide lists Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Arc, and other Chromium-based browsers; check the current vendor guide because compatibility can change. Extension install guide
  2. Open the page in the browser and establish the state you need: sign in if authorized, solve any required challenge, choose the relevant language, or open the generated preview.
  3. Use the extension to capture the whole page or a selection.
  4. Move the capture into Figma using one of the documented routes: send it directly to the plugin, download an `.h2d` file and drop it into the plugin, or use the clipboard workflow described in the vendor blog.
  5. Review the imported layers and compare them with the browser page, especially for dynamic content and interactions.

This route is useful for private-network pages, logged-in content, CAPTCHA-cleared views, a language state that cannot be selected through the URL, and previews that have not been deployed to a public URL. Capturing a state does not establish that every interactive behavior has been reproduced in Figma. Extension documentation

Import a local file

  1. Run the plugin in Figma and open its File tab.
  2. Drop in a supported file. The vendor guide lists `.h2d`, `.html`/`.htm`, ZIP archives, `.eml`/`.emlx`/`.msg` email files, and `.mhtml`/`.mht` web archives.
  3. For ZIP uploads, keep the archive below 32 MB.
  4. Review the result. The guide recommends `.h2d` because it contains the information needed to recreate the webpage. A standalone HTML file may refer to external images, CSS, or JavaScript that are unavailable during import, so those resources may not appear or behave as expected.

See the vendor’s supported formats and local-file instructions.

What an imported Figma file is—and is not

html.to.design describes its output as editable design layers and advertises controls for layout, fonts, themes, and responsive views. That can make a captured page useful as a reference for a site audit, redesign, comparison, or team discussion. It remains a capture workflow: do not treat the canvas as a validated usability finding, a complete record of user behavior, or a guarantee of pixel-perfect fidelity. Verify any detail that matters to your conclusion against the source page and document the state you captured. Vendor feature information

Plan limits and usage

The html.to.design product page currently describes a free plan with up to 10 imports every 30 days. It describes Pro as unlimited imports subject to fair use, with typical individual use limited by the stated policy to 1,000 imports per month. These are vendor plan terms and can change, so check the current plan page before relying on them. html.to.design plans

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a clean image capture rather than editable Figma layers, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It is not an html.to.design replacement for turning a page into Figma design layers.

API documentation

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes supported cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes tools for AI agents to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, with no card.

Troubleshooting

  • The plugin cannot import a URL. Confirm the page is publicly reachable and that the URL opens without authentication. If it depends on a login, private network, CAPTCHA-cleared session, or browser-specific state, use the extension capture route instead.
  • The imported page is missing images or styling. For local HTML, linked resources may be external and unavailable; try the recommended `.h2d` capture format or ensure referenced resources are available. Compare with the original page before treating the import as complete.
  • The page is in the wrong language or state. Set the needed state in the browser and capture with the extension; URL import may not select every language or generated preview state.
  • The import looks different from the live page. Check viewport and theme settings, then inspect dynamic content and font handling. The vendor describes editable output and related options, but does not establish that every site or interaction will reproduce exactly.
  • A ZIP file is rejected. Make sure it is smaller than 32 MB, as specified by the local-file guide.
  • You cannot find the extension in your browser. Check the current installation guide and confirm you are using a supported Chromium-based browser; the named browser list is a vendor compatibility statement and may change.
