What DVR can—and cannot—do
YouTube Help describes DVR as a way to pause, rewind and continue watching while a live stream is running. It also says that after a viewer pauses and resumes, playback continues from the paused point. That documents pause-and-resume behavior within an active stream; it does not establish that YouTube will remember and restore the exact playhead after a network drop, app closure or device restart.

So DVR is useful, but it is not a reconnect-position setting. If a stream returns at the live edge, the practical fix is to seek back manually. Whether the viewer can reach the desired moment depends on the DVR availability and limits for that stream and device.

- Open the stream’s settings in YouTube Studio. In the Live Control Room, find the stream settings and their additional settings.
- Enable DVR. The option is labelled Enable DVR. YouTube says this allows viewers to pause, rewind and continue during the live stream.
- Allow for setting changes to take effect. YouTube says a DVR-setting change applies to viewers who start playing after the change. Do not assume it will affect every viewer already watching the stream immediately.
Enabling DVR improves a viewer’s ability to control playback, but it does not promise automatic restoration after reconnecting.

What to do when playback reconnects at the live edge
- Show the player controls and move the timeline back to the point where the viewer wants to continue. This works only if DVR is available and that point remains within the seekable portion of the stream.
- If the timeline will not go back far enough, check the stream’s duration and the viewer’s device or app. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Apple TV, Apple AirPlay and older app versions are also subject to lower limits.
- If the player is buffering or failing to play, reload the watch page or app, check the internet connection, adjust playback quality, or reopen the player. These are general playback troubleshooting steps; they do not restore a saved playhead position.
- If a particular sleep segment needs to be easy to find later, consider publishing an on-demand recording or a segmented recording when available. This is a creator-side workaround, not automatic reconnect recovery.
Viewers cannot seek to a point before the live stream began, and YouTube does not publish one universal rewind-window duration for every stream and device.
Does latency change where playback resumes?
No documented latency setting guarantees position recovery after reconnecting. Latency is the delay between capture and playback. YouTube explains that lower latency leaves less read-ahead buffer and can increase buffering. For a sleep stream that does not need real-time interaction, a creator may consider normal latency to reduce buffering pressure. That is a separate choice from DVR and does not make the player remember its position after a connection drop.

Keep the broadcast running separately from viewer playback
