HSBC and Ant Digital Technologies have completed an exploratory technical verification of AI-agent payments using tokenized deposits. Announced on 9 October 2026, the test connected an agent’s discovery and use of a digital service with a micropayment and real-time settlement. It was not a commercial launch or a live service for customers.
How would an AI agent make a payment?
In the flow described by Ant Digital Technologies’ 9 October 2026 announcement, an agent could discover a digital service, invoke it, and make the associated micropayment as part of one connected process. The release says the transaction then settled in real time. This is the companies’ description of the technical verification, not an independent assessment of its performance.

What each component did
- HSBC Tokenised Deposit Service (TDS): supplied tokenized-deposit and settlement capabilities. The announcement also says real-time risk checks were provided through HSBC’s MCP interface.
- Anvita Flow: enabled agents to discover and invoke services and manage micropayment settlement.
- Jovay Testnet: provided the Layer 2 blockchain test environment for transactions.
The announcement characterizes a micropayment as “often defined as less than $2.00.” That is Ant Digital Technologies’ description in 2026, not a universal industry definition.
What are tokenized deposits?
Tokenized deposits are digital representations of bank deposits designed to support transactions in a token-based environment. In this announcement, the relevant service is HSBC’s Tokenised Deposit Service. HSBC’s 22 May 2025 Hong Kong launch announcement described TDS as a corporate service for real-time, always-on HKD and USD payments between corporate wallets held by a client at HSBC Hong Kong. HSBC named Ant International as its first client.

That earlier corporate cash-management context helps explain the service behind the later test. It does not establish that the AI-agent arrangement is available to TDS customers, or that the verification used a live customer payment service.
Is HSBC launching AI-agent payments?
No customer launch is announced. The 9 October 2026 release calls the work a technical verification: an exploration of whether an AI agent could carry out service discovery, service use, and payment in one automated flow. It does not say customers can use the test, identify who would be eligible, or give a commercialization date.
HSBC Global Head of Digital Currencies Lewis Sun said the bank is exploring how innovation and collaboration could improve customer experience and reduce friction while maintaining appropriate controls and responsible development. Ant Digital Technologies’ President of Blockchain Business, Zhuoqun Bian, described the verification as demonstrating the potential use of on-chain AI agents. Both comments are statements by company representatives, not independent evaluations or evidence of production readiness.

What the announcement does not prove
The release does not report transaction volume, measured latency, failure rates, or an independent security assessment. It also does not detail the risk-control design beyond identifying real-time checks through HSBC’s MCP interface. Without those details, the demonstration should not be read as proof that agent-led payments are secure, reliable at scale, or ready for production.

For readers assessing future agent-payment announcements, useful distinctions include the form of digital money involved, whether service discovery and payment happen in one flow, whether settlement uses a testnet or a live-value system, who performs risk checks, and whether the project is a verification, pilot, or generally available service. This HSBC–Ant Digital announcement establishes a testnet-based technical verification, not a live customer option.
