Union Pacific’s appeal, as described in an October 9, 2026 article, is a combination of an established freight-rail network, operating cash generation and a long dividend-raising record, with a proposed Norfolk Southern merger offering a possible additional growth story. But the reported share counts belong to investment firms associated with wealthy investors—not necessarily to the individuals personally—and the merger remains a proposal, not a completed deal.
What the reported billionaire-linked holdings actually show
The Motley Fool article published October 9, 2026, reports these Union Pacific positions: The Motley Fool’s report.

| Investor association | Manager or firm named | Shares reported by the article |
|---|---|---|
| Ken Griffin | Citadel | 2,675,693 |
| Chris Hohn | TCI Fund Management | 4,032 |
| Bill Gates | Cascades | 3,435 |
These figures should be read as the article’s account of institutional holdings, not as verified personal purchases by Griffin, Hohn or Gates. Form 13F filings report investment-manager holdings; a filing alone does not establish that an individual personally chose or beneficially owns every share attributed to a related firm. The available source material does not independently confirm these counts or give their filing-specific as-of dates, so they are not a reliable real-time ownership snapshot.

Why Union Pacific may appeal without a merger
A large existing freight network
The stand-alone investment case begins with Union Pacific’s existing railroad business: a broad network serving freight customers and an operating model that can generate cash when volumes, pricing and costs align. A railroad’s performance is tied to economic activity and commodity mix, so network scale alone does not guarantee steady growth or returns.

Recent operating performance
The Motley Fool article reports second-quarter 2026 operating revenue of $6.86 billion, net income of $2 billion and adjusted earnings per share of $3.41. These are article-reported figures, not figures independently verified here against the quarterly earnings release or filing. Union Pacific’s SEC filings index is the company’s official starting point for checking its filings; its 2025 Form 10-K, filed February 6, 2026, provides audited annual background rather than confirmation of those second-quarter results.
Dividend history
The article says Union Pacific had raised its dividend for 20 consecutive years and reports a 2.8% quarterly dividend increase. Those claims should be checked against the company’s dividend history before being treated as independently confirmed. A dividend increase is not the same as a fixed yield: yield changes with the share price, and future payments or increases are not guaranteed.

What the proposed Norfolk Southern merger could add
The article describes an $85 billion proposed Union Pacific–Norfolk Southern transaction. It says the combined railroad would exceed 52,000 track miles and could offer coast-to-coast single-line service. Those are proposed scale and service outcomes, not capabilities of a completed combined company.

Treat these as company-estimated benefits, not observed results. A merger thesis depends on regulatory review and the ability to integrate two large rail systems; the cited material also notes opposition. The available evidence does not establish that regulators approved the transaction or that it closed. Risks investors should weigh alongside the bullish case
- Economic cycles and freight mix: Demand differs across commodities and intermodal traffic, and weaker activity can weigh on volumes and revenue.
- Service and execution: Rail operating performance depends on reliable service. A proposed merger could add integration and service challenges even if its projected network benefits are achieved.
- Regulatory uncertainty: The merger’s projected benefits depend on approval and execution; opposition and review can affect whether, when or under what conditions it proceeds.
- Capital allocation: Dividends, debt, capital spending and any transaction commitments compete for financial resources. A long history of increases does not remove those trade-offs.
- Valuation: A strong business or well-known shareholders do not by themselves make a stock attractive at every price. The supplied figures do not provide a current valuation comparison or a basis for ranking Union Pacific against peers.
How to interpret the story as an investor
The reported institutional positions are a signal worth investigating, not an investment recommendation. Ownership snapshots can change, and the figures in the article lack independently verified filing dates here. The operating figures are also a single quarterly snapshot, while the merger is contingent. A fuller assessment would compare Union Pacific’s service measures and operating ratio, volume and pricing by commodity, revenue and free cash flow, debt and capital spending, dividend coverage, valuation and network access with relevant peers over consistent periods. No comparable peer figures are established in the cited material.
For company fundamentals, start with Union Pacific’s filings and earnings releases; for the reported holdings, look for the relevant manager’s original 13F filing and its reporting period. Consider both the stand-alone railroad business and the uncertain merger scenario, and do not infer future returns from billionaire-linked ownership.
