The labels are not perfectly consistent across Nintendo’s regional pages, so the most reliable way to tell them apart is to look at what changed and how you get the game.
What makes a Zelda release a remake, remaster or classic rerelease?
These terms describe practical differences, not a rigid official Nintendo classification. A remake typically reconstructs or reimagines much of the original experience. A remaster or HD rerelease generally retains more of the original game while updating presentation or adapting it to newer hardware. A Nintendo Switch Online release is a classic game offered through a subscription library; it is not, by itself, a remake.

- How much was rebuilt? A remake may substantially rework the presentation or gameplay. An HD release usually preserves the underlying game more closely.
- What changed? Consider visuals, audio, controls, interface and game systems—not just the label on the box.
- Which original version is it based on? A game brought forward from an older console is different from a classic version accessed through a library.
- How do you get it? Modern releases such as Link’s Awakening and Skyward Sword HD are sold as individual games. Switch Online classics are accessed through membership, with the required library tier depending on the title.
How the main Zelda examples compare
| Release type | Example | What the player gets | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remake or reimagining | The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (Switch, 2019) | A reworked presentation, newly arranged soundtrack and gameplay changes based on the Game Boy adventure. | Separately sold physical or digital game. Nintendo’s product listing |
| HD release or update | The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD (Switch, 2021) | The 2011 Wii game released for Switch with HD in the title. Nintendo’s regional terminology differs, so the features and release model are more informative than the label alone. | Separately sold physical or digital game. Nintendo U.S. listing and Nintendo Japan listing |
| Classic game through a membership library | The Legend of Zelda (NES); Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64) | Access to classic versions in Nintendo Classics libraries; these are not new remakes of the games. | Membership required. The NES game is in the NES library; Ocarina of Time is in the Nintendo 64 library, which Nintendo identifies as Expansion Pack access. See the membership details, NES library and Nintendo 64 library. |
| Announced rebuilt release | Ocarina of Time for Switch 2 | Nintendo describes a version built from the ground up, with overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, and modernized movement and camera features. | Nintendo lists November 5, 2026 as its release date. That date is upcoming as of October 13, 2026; check the Nintendo listing for current availability and edition details. |
Why the labels do not settle the question
Nintendo describes the Switch version of Link’s Awakening as reimagined, and its product description points to concrete changes including reworked visuals, new soundtrack arrangements and gameplay adjustments. Those changes make it a useful example of a remake in practical terms. Nintendo’s Link’s Awakening listing
For Skyward Sword HD, Nintendo’s U.S. page presents a Switch edition of the 2011 Wii game, while Nintendo Japan calls the Switch version a remake. That regional difference shows why the word alone can mislead. Compare what was changed and whether the release is a standalone game or a subscription-library version. How Nintendo Switch Online changes access
Switch Online’s Nintendo Classics libraries offer selected older games to members. The service is an access route, not a label for a newly rebuilt version. Library placement and membership tier vary by title: Nintendo lists the original NES The Legend of Zelda in its NES library and Ocarina of Time in its Nintendo 64 library, for Expansion Pack members. Check Nintendo’s membership page and the relevant NES or Nintendo 64 library listing for current access details.
