Compare the exact laptops you are considering—not “Mac” against “Windows” as if either were one specification. Before switching, confirm that your essential apps and devices work with the candidate machine, then compare its performance for your workload, screen and monitor support, battery evidence, ports, configuration cost, and the effort of moving your files and routines.
The name MacBook Pro does not identify a single configuration, and Windows laptops vary by manufacturer, model, and processor architecture. For example, Apple’s 2026 16-inch MacBook Pro specifications distinguish M5 Pro from M5 Max on battery estimates and external-display support. A useful decision is therefore a model-to-model comparison, grounded in the software and equipment you actually rely on.

Start with the software and devices you cannot replace
Make a short list of the programs, plug-ins, games, development tools, accessibility features, workplace tools, and peripherals that are essential to your day. For each item, verify support for the exact operating system and processor architecture of the laptop you are considering. If your employer or school manages the device, ask its IT team before switching.

Some Windows laptops use Arm processors; others use different architectures. Microsoft Learn says, “Windows 11 on Arm supports emulation of both x86 and x64 apps.” Emulation can help run many apps, but it does not make every program or accessory compatible: Microsoft says emulation does not support drivers, and kernel-mode components must be built for Arm64. Print drivers on Arm64 devices must also be native Arm64 binaries. Check with the publisher or device manufacturer about any specialized app, anti-cheat system, installer, printer, or other hardware that matters to you.

Check the Mac version of your workflow
Confirm that the Mac versions of your required software and plug-ins support the work you need to do, and that you can open and continue using your existing files. If a workflow depends on a Windows-only application, verify a supported alternative or a documented way to run it before you buy. Do not assume that a virtualized Windows setup is equivalent to a supported native Windows installation.
Compare performance for the work you actually do
List your typical tasks—such as office work, software development, large builds, video or photo editing, 3D work, scientific applications, or gaming—and identify which ones drive your purchase. Compare independent tests of the exact processor, graphics, memory, and thermal configuration where available. Results for a different model or configuration may not predict yours, and manufacturer claims are not a substitute for testing the workload that matters to you.

Windows 11 minimum requirements are a compatibility floor, not a recommended configuration for demanding work and not a performance comparison with a MacBook Pro. Microsoft lists a compatible processor, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI with Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics, and a display larger than 9 inches at HD resolution. Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro for personal use also require internet connectivity and a Microsoft account during initial device setup. Choose capacity and performance for your tasks and expected ownership period rather than treating those minimums as a shopping target.

Compare screen size, resolution, refresh rate, brightness, and color characteristics relevant to your work. Then check the exact laptop’s supported external-monitor count, resolution, and refresh rates, including any limits tied to a chip, port, or dock. Do not infer display capability just from a USB-C connector or the laptop family name.

Apple’s 2026 specifications for the 16-inch MacBook Pro list a 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display with native resolution of 3456 by 2234 and adaptive refresh rates up to 120 Hz. The page lists support for up to three external displays on M5 Pro configurations and up to four on M5 Max configurations, subject to further resolution and refresh-rate limits for the display arrangement. Check the exact configuration and connection path against Apple’s specification page before planning a multi-monitor desk.
Read battery claims as test-specific evidence
Battery estimates are meaningful only alongside their test category and conditions. Apple lists up to 24 hours of video streaming and up to 17 hours of wireless web for the 16-inch M5 Pro configuration; for M5 Max, it lists up to 22 hours of video streaming and up to 16 hours of wireless web. These are Apple-published estimates for separate test categories, not guaranteed hours of mixed work or a controlled comparison with a Windows laptop.

For a head-to-head decision, look for independent tests of the exact models under comparable workloads. Note the test method, screen brightness, wireless state, and configuration beside any quoted result. Without those details, a battery number may not reflect your day.

Check every connection you plan to reuse
List your displays, docks, external drives, memory cards, audio gear, printers, and chargers. Match connector type and capability—not just the physical plug—including video output, data speed, and power delivery where relevant. The 16-inch MacBook Pro specifications list an SDXC card slot, HDMI, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, MagSafe 3, and three Thunderbolt 5 USB-C ports. Apple notes that an adapter may be needed when an existing cable for a display, drive, or other device does not connect to a Mac Thunderbolt or USB-C port. That is a reason to check your own cables and requirements, not to assume every buyer needs a hub.

Plan capacity and service for your ownership horizon
Compare the memory and storage configurations offered for each exact model against the capacity you need now and over the years you expect to keep the laptop. Confirm whether memory or storage can be upgraded, and review warranty, repair, and support terms for the model and region where you will buy it. These details vary by product and location; they cannot be reliably generalized across all Windows laptops or all MacBook Pro configurations.
Calculate total cost and switching effort
Compare actual prices for configurations that meet the same needs, rather than comparing a base model with a higher-capacity one. Add any required software licenses or subscriptions, adapters or docks, replacement peripherals, and backup or migration tools. Account for transition effort too: learning a different operating system, replacing unavailable apps, adjusting file-handling habits, and reconfiguring work or school systems can cost time even when the laptop price fits your budget.
No specific Windows model or current retailer price is established here, so there is no defensible price winner for the category. Get current quotes for named configurations and include the accessories and software each setup requires.
Quick Recap
Use this checklist before replacing your current laptop
- Name the candidates. Write down the exact MacBook Pro chip and configuration and the exact Windows laptop model and processor architecture you intend to buy.
- Verify must-have compatibility. Check each essential app, plug-in, game, driver, and peripheral with its publisher or manufacturer; for Windows on Arm, verify driver and Arm64 support specifically.
- Map your real workload. Identify your most demanding regular tasks and compare independent results for the configurations you are considering.
- Draw your display and port setup. Record monitor count and requirements, then match each cable and accessory to the candidate’s supported ports and display limits.
- Compare battery evidence fairly. Prefer comparable independent tests, and keep test conditions attached to every figure.
- Price the complete setup. Include the capacity you need, software, accessories, potential replacements, and the time needed to move your workflow.
- Plan the migration. Back up important files, confirm how essential documents and projects will transfer, and resolve any Windows-only or organization-managed workflow before committing.
