Outlook’s appearance controls depend on which app you use. In new Outlook for Windows or Outlook on the web, open Settings > General > Appearance. In classic Outlook for Windows, check File > Office Account > Office Theme. First identify your Outlook client, then change the setting that matches what disappeared: the whole app’s theme, dark mode, or just the message background.
Identify which Outlook you’re using
The menu paths differ between new Outlook for Windows, classic Outlook for Windows, and Outlook on the web. In Windows, a Settings button in the upper-right corner indicates new Outlook. If it is missing, you are in classic Outlook. New Outlook has Home, View, and Help ribbon tabs; classic Outlook has a File tab for account and options settings. Microsoft’s feature comparison also shows that Themes are available in new Outlook but not classic Outlook. The instructions below were checked against Microsoft Support pages on October 11, 2026; menu labels may change as the apps are updated.

Restore the appearance in new Outlook for Windows
Change the overall dark-mode setting
- Select Settings > General > Appearance.
- Under Dark mode, select Light for a light interface, or Use system settings to follow your device’s appearance setting.
- Select Save.
These controls are for new Outlook’s appearance and dark mode, not the Office Theme setting in classic Outlook. Microsoft’s dark-mode instructions cover the distinction.

If the interface looks right but the message or reading pane is dark, you may not need to change the overall theme. Use the light-background control in the message window, or select View > Light Reading Pane in new Outlook. Dark mode and the message background are separate settings.

Restore the appearance in classic Outlook for Windows
To change the Office application theme, select File > Office Account, then choose the preferred value under Office Theme. Microsoft says this theme applies to Microsoft 365 desktop applications, not just Outlook.
For some users, the Office Theme dropdown may appear empty until a new theme is selected. Microsoft’s Office Visual Refresh guidance also gives the path File > Options > General > Office Theme.

Change the theme in Outlook on the web
In Outlook on the web or Outlook.com, select Settings > General > Appearance, then choose the mailbox theme or dark-mode setting you want. These are web-mailbox appearance controls; they are separate from classic Outlook’s Office Theme setting. Microsoft’s mailbox appearance instructions cover the web experience.
If Outlook itself switched to the new app
If “previous appearance” means the classic Outlook app rather than a color or theme, use the top-right toggle in new Outlook for Windows, if it is available:

- Switch back to classic Outlook makes the switch persist.
- Use classic Outlook this time opens classic Outlook for one use; later launches continue redirecting to new Outlook.
The toggle may not appear if classic Outlook is not installed. Microsoft explains the options in its instructions for switching to classic Outlook.

Microsoft lists Dark Mode and Header Theme among settings that can be imported from classic Outlook. The import requires General > Store my Outlook settings in the cloud to be enabled in classic Outlook. To retry the import, Microsoft’s setup guidance says to go to Settings > Accounts > Your accounts, select Manage beside the primary account, then choose Get Started. If the setting you need is missing
- Confirm whether you have new Outlook, classic Outlook, or the web version; do not apply a menu path from a different client.
- Check whether you are changing the app-wide appearance, the Office application theme, or only the message background. They are different controls.
- If a menu or toggle is not present, confirm the client and app version. Microsoft feature availability and labels can change with updates and rollouts.
