Spoilers through manga Volume 30: Yuji Itadori’s power set is not one inherited ability revealed at the beginning. It is a layered build: exceptional physical ability and cursed-energy reinforcement first, then Black Flash mastery, the host-imprinted Shrine, Blood Manipulation connected to the Death Painting Wombs, reverse cursed technique, and finally a domain focused on the boundary between souls.
That progression explains why Yuji can challenge Sukuna without having Sukuna’s complete skill set. Each layer serves a different role—close-range damage, precision cutting, blood control, healing, or sure-hit pressure—and each came from a different route through the jujutsu system.

Yuji’s starting point: strength before technique
The official Shonen Jump synopsis describes cursed energy as power generated from negative human emotions. Yuji enters that world when a sealed cursed object is unsealed and he swallows one of Sukuna’s fingers, becoming Sukuna’s vessel. That event gives Yuji an unusual place in the power system: he begins as an extraordinarily capable human rather than as a sorcerer introduced through a clearly demonstrated innate technique.
Physical ability and cursed-energy reinforcement
Before Shrine or Blood Manipulation appears, Yuji’s main weapons are speed, strength, durability and hand-to-hand skill. He reinforces his body with cursed energy, allowing ordinary punches and kicks to damage curses and survive attacks that would kill a normal person. This is not a separate named cursed technique. It is the basic application of cursed energy that competent sorcerers use to increase offense and defense.
#1 Best Overall
Yuji’s physical base remains important after he gains more abilities. His techniques work best at close range, where he can combine movement, grappling and repeated strikes instead of relying on one long-distance attack.
Black Flash as a control breakthrough
Black Flash occurs when cursed energy connects with a physical hit within an exceptionally short interval. It is a precision phenomenon, not a technique that Yuji can simply activate whenever he chooses. The publisher’s Volume 29 summary emphasizes that Yuji repeatedly lands Black Flash during the Sukuna battle and that these impacts open his latent power.
That wording matters. The available official material does not provide a safe numeric multiplier for Black Flash, so claims that assign it a fixed percentage should not be treated as established canon. For Yuji, the meaningful change is practical: repeated perfect timing sharpens his cursed-energy control and pushes him toward abilities that had previously been inaccessible.

What Shrine does
Shrine is the slashing cursed technique associated with Sukuna. Its attacks are commonly rendered as Dismantle and Cleave. Dismantle functions as a cutting attack, while Cleave is associated with adjusting its cutting power to the target. The exact presentation and conditions differ depending on the user and circumstances, so Yuji’s access should not be read as proof that he can reproduce every one of Sukuna’s applications at the same level.
Host imprinting is different from being born with Sukuna’s technique
Yuji gains access to Shrine after Sukuna has remained in his body for an extended period. Reference material describes this as a technique imprinted through the vessel relationship. In other words, Yuji does not begin the story as someone born with Sukuna’s complete innate ability. Sukuna’s prolonged presence leaves a usable pattern in Yuji, which later emerges under extreme combat pressure.
This distinction resolves a common misconception. Yuji has Shrine, but he is not simply “Sukuna with a different body.” His output, experience, tactical habits and relationship to the soul are different. Yuji’s version becomes part of a broader build that includes Blood Manipulation, healing and barrier skills.
Why Shrine suits Yuji
Yuji already fights by entering an opponent’s space and chaining physical attacks. A precise cutting technique gives those exchanges another layer: a punch can force an opening, while a slash can attack an exposed line or interfere with an opponent’s movement. Against Sukuna, Yuji’s interest is not only raw damage. His attacks are tied to the boundary between souls, which supports his effort to separate Sukuna from Megumi rather than merely injure the shared body.
Blood Manipulation and the Death Painting connection
Where the ability comes from
Yuji later uses Blood Manipulation, a technique connected in the story to the Death Painting Wombs and Choso’s side of the family history. The chapter and character references also connect Yuji’s preparation for the Sukuna fight with training in this ability. The evidence supports describing Blood Manipulation as an acquired, bloodline-related technique rather than as a skill Yuji displayed from childhood.
What Blood Manipulation adds
Blood Manipulation is more versatile than a single projectile. It lets Yuji shape and move blood, giving him options for pressure, positioning and close-quarters support. He can use controlled blood to extend the reach or timing of an attack, create a distraction, and maintain offensive momentum when an opponent expects only punches.
The technique also has a defensive and medical role. Yuji can control his own blood and use that control to stabilize serious injuries. This does not make every wound harmless: blood loss, concentration and the severity of damage still matter. Its value is that it gives Yuji a way to keep fighting while he applies another healing method.
Why it changes his combat identity
Shrine is primarily a cutting threat, while Blood Manipulation gives Yuji control over the medium inside his own body and around an exchange. Together they make his style less linear. He can pressure an opponent physically, alter the angle or timing with blood, and then use a slash when the defense is compromised. That combination is especially useful in a prolonged battle where conserving position and recovering from damage are as important as landing one decisive blow.

Reverse cursed technique: Yuji’s learned healing skill
How reverse cursed technique works
Ordinary cursed energy is negative. Reverse cursed technique converts cursed energy into positive energy, which can restore damaged tissue. It is one of the most difficult forms of jujutsu because the user must generate and control positive energy rather than simply reinforce the body with cursed energy.
Yuji learns it late and imperfectly
Yuji is not portrayed as an effortless healer. Chapter 258 material describes Choso helping him recognize severe internal damage, after which Yuji combines Blood Manipulation with reverse cursed technique to reattach and heal an injury. The scene presents a developing skill with instruction, concentration and a learning curve.
Blood Manipulation makes the process more practical because Yuji can first control bleeding and hold damaged areas in place. Reverse cursed technique then supplies restoration. The two abilities complement one another, but neither removes the cost of taking damage. Yuji still has to notice the injury, maintain enough cursed energy and perform the technique under battle conditions.
Yuji’s domain expansion and the boundary of souls
What a domain means in the power system
Domain expansion is a high-level barrier technique. The user creates a bounded space and imbues a cursed technique into it, normally producing a sure-hit advantage. A domain therefore tests more than attack power: the caster must understand barriers, maintain the space and impose a technique on everyone inside it.

Character reference material says Yuji learned barrier fundamentals and could cast a domain. That places him in a rare category. Many powerful fighters never develop a domain, and learning one requires more than discovering a new attack. Yuji’s progress shows that his growth includes formal jujutsu knowledge, not only physical adaptation and instinct.
The soul-focused purpose of his domain
Shueisha’s Volume 30 description specifically states that Yuji deploys a domain at the boundary of souls while trying to separate Sukuna from Megumi. The domain’s narrative importance is therefore precise: it expresses Yuji’s sensitivity to souls and turns that sensitivity into a system-level technique against the strongest sorcerer in the conflict.
The manga does not provide a universally accepted numeric measurement for the domain’s strength, range or output. It is safer to describe its confirmed function and context than to assign an unsupported ranking. Its importance comes from the matchup and the target condition—separating a possessing presence from its vessel—not from a published statistic.

How the abilities fit together
Yuji’s build can be understood by origin, function and mastery rather than by a single power score.
| Ability | Origin in Yuji’s development | Primary function | How it supports the whole build |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physical ability and cursed-energy reinforcement | Yuji’s starting human strength and basic cursed-energy training | Close-range offense, defense and mobility | Provides the reliable platform from which every later technique is used |
| Black Flash | Precision combat phenomenon; repeated during the Sukuna battle | Amplifies the effect of perfectly timed physical and cursed-energy impacts | Improves timing and helps unlock latent potential |
| Shrine | Technique imprinted through Sukuna’s prolonged presence as Yuji’s vessel | Precision cutting through applications associated with Dismantle and Cleave | Adds lethal reach and soul-directed pressure to hand-to-hand exchanges |
| Blood Manipulation | Connection to the Death Painting Wombs and later training | Blood shaping, movement, offense and injury stabilization | Creates control options and supports Yuji’s recovery process |
| Reverse cursed technique | Late learned skill, developed with Choso’s help | Restoration through positive energy | Lets Yuji recover from serious damage when paired with blood control |
| Domain expansion | Learned barrier fundamentals and advanced domain casting | Bounded space with a technique-based sure-hit advantage | Converts Yuji’s soul awareness into a high-level contest with Sukuna |
The layers are complementary rather than redundant. Reinforcement and Black Flash govern how Yuji lands a hit. Shrine changes what that hit can do. Blood Manipulation controls the fight’s spacing and Yuji’s physical condition. Reverse cursed technique extends his survival window. The domain packages his technique and soul-focused objective into the most formal level of jujutsu combat.
Yuji compared with Sukuna and other sorcerers
A universal numerical tier list is not supported by the available official summaries. No authoritative figure establishes Yuji’s cursed-energy output, healing speed or domain strength, and the series’ matchups depend heavily on conditions, compatibility and experience. A useful comparison therefore uses four axes.
Origin
- Host-imprinted: Shrine becomes available through Sukuna’s prolonged presence in Yuji.
- Blood-related: Blood Manipulation is tied to the Death Painting Womb and Choso connection.
- Learned: Reverse cursed technique and domain casting require instruction and practice.
- Foundational: Physical ability, reinforcement and Black Flash grow from Yuji’s combat aptitude.
Function
Sukuna’s greatest advantage is breadth, refinement and experience with his own technique. Yuji’s advantage is integration: he can combine physical pressure, slashes, blood control and healing in one continuous exchange. Against a specialist, Yuji’s versatility can create openings; against a master such as Sukuna, the same versatility does not guarantee equal output or experience.
Mastery and battle testing
Yuji’s techniques do not all have the same maturity. His physical fighting and Black Flash timing are the longest-established parts of his style. Shrine and Blood Manipulation are later additions, while reverse cursed technique and domain expansion arrive after focused learning and extreme pressure. Treating every ability as equally polished obscures the actual progression shown in the manga.

Souls, vessels and conditions
Yuji is unusually suited to a conflict involving possession because he understands the vessel relationship from inside it. His domain and Shrine applications matter specifically because the objective is to separate Sukuna and Megumi. That compatibility is a matchup advantage, not proof that Yuji automatically surpasses every sorcerer in raw cursed energy.
What Yuji’s progression says about Jujutsu Kaisen’s system
Yuji’s development demonstrates that the series’ power system is not limited to birthright techniques. A fighter can become stronger through bodily conditioning, cursed-energy timing, a vessel’s imprint, family or biological connections, technical instruction and repeated breakthroughs in battle.
His path also shows why categories overlap. Shrine is linked to a vessel, Blood Manipulation to the Death Painting history, healing to learned positive-energy control, and the domain to barrier fundamentals and soul awareness. None of these explanations alone describes Yuji. The character’s strength comes from how the layers interact under a specific condition: a close-range fighter trying to free a vessel from the sorcerer occupying it.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- Yuji starts with exceptional physical ability and cursed-energy reinforcement, not a clearly demonstrated innate technique.
- Repeated Black Flash during the Sukuna battle is identified by the publisher as a trigger for unlocking latent power.
- Shrine reaches Yuji through Sukuna’s prolonged presence as his vessel; this is host imprinting, not evidence that Yuji was born with Sukuna’s complete technique.
- Blood Manipulation comes through the Death Painting Womb and Choso connection and serves both combat and injury stabilization.
- Yuji learns reverse cursed technique late, with help, and combines it with Blood Manipulation for serious wound recovery.
- His domain is tied to the boundary of souls and the attempt to separate Sukuna from Megumi, giving his power set a direct answer to the vessel problem.
