The correct code and button sequence depend on the receiver model and remote. Start by identifying the exact Yamaha model and the device you want to control, then use the model’s manual and code list.
What “pairing” means with a Yamaha receiver remote
In Yamaha manuals, setting a remote-control code means registering a code for an external component so the Yamaha remote can send it commands. On the RX-V871, for example, codes are assigned to input selection keys; selecting an input also selects the device-control area for that source. This is separate from connecting a device to the receiver itself. A remote code does not establish Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity, or enable HDMI-CEC. If you mean connecting a phone, speaker, or other device to the receiver, use the manual’s instructions for that connection type rather than the remote-code procedure. Yamaha RX-V565 Owner’s Manual
Find the manual and code list for your exact model
- Identify the receiver model. Check the receiver’s label or its product documentation. A model name matters because Yamaha’s code-entry steps and feedback are not universal.
- Open Yamaha’s official manual library. Search for the exact model and retrieve its owner’s manual and any separate remote-control-code document listed for it. Yamaha United States manuals for audio and visual products
- Check the model’s downloads page. Some model pages list code documents alongside manuals; for example, Yamaha’s RX-V475 downloads page lists a code document for the RX-V475/RX-V575 family. - Confirm what you want the remote to control. Find the code category for the target component, such as a TV or player, and use a code listed for its manufacturer.
Follow the procedure for your receiver, not a generic Yamaha sequence
These examples illustrate why you should not combine instructions from different manuals. They apply to the named models only; consult your receiver’s own manual before entering a code.

RX-V365: enter a four-digit code
The RX-V365 manual directs users to enter a four-digit remote-control code for the component, using the code list at the back of the manual. When the same manufacturer has several listed codes, try each in turn. The receiver displays “RemoteSetup OK” when registration succeeds and “RemoteSetup NG” when it fails. If no key is pressed for 30 seconds during the described setup, it is canceled and must be repeated. Yamaha RX-V365 Owner’s Manual
RX-V565: start with CODE SET, then choose the input
For the RX-V565, the manual says to press CODE SET with a pointed object, select the input, and enter the remote-control code using the numeric keys. The transmission indicator blinks twice after registration and six times if registration fails. These indicators and steps belong to the RX-V565 instructions; do not assume another Yamaha remote uses the same sequence. Yamaha RX-V565 Owner’s Manual

If the code does not work as expected
- Registration fails: Recheck the model-specific instructions and the code category, then try the other codes listed for the component’s manufacturer if the manual recommends it. Use the receiver’s own success or failure indication to verify registration; feedback differs by model.
- Registration succeeds, but buttons do nothing: Check that the selected input or remote-control area corresponds to the device you programmed. The RX-V565 manual also notes that external-component keys work only when the target component has corresponding controls and a code has been set.
- Only some commands work: The code provides the controls supported for that target component; it does not establish that every remote button has a matching function on every device. Check the component’s available controls and the receiver manual’s notes.
- The remote is missing or faulty: Check replacement compatibility against the exact receiver model and the functions you need. The manuals establish model-specific remote procedures, but do not verify any particular third-party replacement.
Remote-code setup versus receiver connectivity
Choose the setup path based on which device is supposed to control or connect to what. A TV or player operated by the Yamaha remote calls for the receiver’s component-code instructions. A phone or speaker connecting to the receiver, or a question about HDMI-CEC, calls for the relevant connection or control feature in the exact model’s manual. The word “pair” alone does not identify which setup applies.
