Three ways to access Xbox games

Microsoft describes digital games as licensed digital goods. So “I bought the game” is useful shorthand, but it does not mean the same thing as owning an unrestricted physical object. A subscription download is especially different: downloading it does not turn temporary catalog access into a separate purchase.

What happens when Game Pass ends or a game leaves?
Xbox says subscribers can access games in the library until the subscription is canceled or expires, or a game leaves the library. If either happens, access to that catalog game ends unless you have another qualifying entitlement, such as a separate purchase. Xbox says recurring billing is on by default and can be turned off through a Microsoft account or console. The exact live instructions and terms may vary by market, so use the current account or console billing controls for your region rather than relying on an old menu path.

How free-to-play games fit in
Xbox lists free and free-to-play multiplayer games in its store, but that listing alone does not establish a universal rule for whether online multiplayer is available without a subscription. Requirements can depend on the specific title, platform, region and current service terms. Check the game’s current store page and official requirements before assuming you can play online without Game Pass or another subscription. Xbox free-to-play games
Disc play and disc-to-digital licenses
A physical disc and a digital purchase are distinct ways to access a game. Microsoft also defines a limited “Disc to Digital Licensed Game” arrangement: with a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc in a supported console, a user may be able to claim or receive a digital license. That digital license remains tied to the qualifying disc. Microsoft’s rules say continued possession of the disc is a condition; Microsoft may revalidate eligibility and may suspend or revoke access if the disc is no longer held. Sharing digital games across Xbox consoles
On the purchaser’s Home console
Microsoft says eligible digital games, durable add-ons and subscription-enabled content can be shared with other users on the purchaser’s Home console. The purchaser does not need to stay signed in for that Home-console sharing to work. Xbox Home console sharing

On another console
On a console that is not the purchaser’s Home console, Microsoft describes roaming access while the purchaser is signed in and connected. If the purchaser signs out, those roaming licenses become invalid for other accounts on that console. What to check before choosing a subscription or purchase
- How long you need access: A catalog game is conditional on an active subscription and continued catalog inclusion; a separate purchase has its own license.
- Where and how you play: Check platform and region availability, as well as whether you need online multiplayer and what that particular title requires.
- Disc or digital: A disc may be required for disc-based play, and a disc-to-digital license has its own eligibility and continued-possession conditions.
- Who will play and where: Home-console sharing and roaming access have different sign-in and device conditions.
- Current plan details: Game Pass benefits and catalogs vary by plan and market and can change. Check the current Xbox page for your region rather than relying on a fixed catalog count. Xbox Game Pass FAQ
