Xbox is scheduled to introduce monthly cloud-gaming allowances for Game Pass in November 2026. The published limits are 5 hours per month on Essential, 10 hours on Premium and 15 hours on Ultimate. Before the change takes effect, eligible Game Pass subscribers can stream without these monthly hour limits.
After a plan’s included time is used, Xbox says players will be able to buy additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store. Xbox has not yet published the price, bundle sizes, expiry rules, complete market rollout or the exact way subscribers will check their remaining time.

Xbox Cloud Gaming limits at a glance
| Game Pass plan | Included cloud playtime | Published library and service context |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | 5 hours per month | 50+ games and online console multiplayer |
| Premium | 10 hours per month | 200+ games and Xbox-published games within one year of launch |
| Ultimate | 15 hours per month | 500+ games, day-one games, EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics |
These are monthly allowances tied to the eligible subscription plan. The hours are not a shared pool across plans, and having more than one eligible subscription does not add the allowances together. If multiple subscriptions are active, Xbox says the subscription with the higher number of hours applies.

When the limits begin
Xbox says the change begins in November 2026. Until then, eligible Game Pass subscribers can use cloud gaming without the new monthly hour limits. The published announcement does not give a single clock time for the switchover, so the practical start may depend on account and market rollout.

Xbox estimates that the change will affect about 4% of Game Pass subscribers, according to Microsoft/Xbox in 2026. That figure is an Xbox estimate, not an independent measurement, and it does not identify how many hours those customers currently stream.
"Beginning in November, we’re changing how cloud gaming is included with XBOX Game Pass." — Team Xbox, 2026
Xbox describes the policy as a way to continue investing in service reliability and performance while keeping cloud gaming available. It also acknowledges that introducing limits is a meaningful change for people who regularly spend a large share of their gaming time in the cloud.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow the monthly allowance works
The allowance follows the subscription plan
Each eligible plan has its own monthly number of cloud-play hours. The allowance is not described as a daily quota, a per-game quota or a limit on the number of sessions. A 30-minute session and a two-hour session draw from the same monthly total.
Subscriptions do not stack
If an account has more than one eligible Game Pass subscription, Xbox says only the plan with the higher allowance applies. For example, buying or retaining Essential alongside Ultimate would not create a 20-hour pool. The higher plan’s allowance is the one that matters.

Monthly timing and rollover are not fully specified
Xbox calls the allowance monthly, but it has not yet published the exact reset date or time, whether unused time carries over, or how a mid-month plan upgrade or downgrade changes the balance. Those details should be checked in the account terms when Xbox publishes them before the November change.
Cloud hours are separate from game ownership
The allowance concerns time spent playing through Xbox Cloud Gaming. It does not mean a game disappears from a console or PC installation when the cloud balance is exhausted. A player who owns or can otherwise install a game can continue using local hardware under the normal licensing and service rules; the new quota applies to cloud streaming.
What happens when the included hours run out
Xbox says additional cloud playtime will be sold through the Xbox Store. It has not published the price, the number of hours in each bundle, whether purchased time expires, or whether every cloud-playable title and market will be eligible.
- Price: not stated by Xbox.
- Bundle sizes: not stated.
- Expiry rules: not stated.
- Eligible games: Xbox says details are still to come.
- Market availability: the complete rollout is not yet stated.
- Balance checking: Xbox has not yet explained the final account or app location for remaining time.
Do not assume that an extra-time purchase will behave like a subscription renewal, that it will be unlimited for the rest of the month, or that it will work in every country. Those terms are pending Xbox’s pre-launch details.
What each Game Pass plan means for cloud players
Essential: a small allowance for occasional streaming
Essential includes the lowest published cloud allowance and a catalog of more than 50 games, along with online console multiplayer. It can suit someone who normally plays installed games but wants cloud access for travel, a second screen or brief sessions. A player who streams several evenings each week will reach the allowance quickly and may need to budget for extra time once Xbox publishes its pricing.

Premium: a middle option with a broader catalog
Premium increases both the monthly cloud allocation and the catalog to more than 200 games. It also includes Xbox-published games within one year of launch. This is the more balanced choice for a subscriber who uses cloud gaming regularly but does not make it the primary way to play. The one-year release timing is not the same as day-one access.
Ultimate: the largest allowance and the broadest bundle
Ultimate has the highest published monthly allowance, a catalog of more than 500 games and day-one games. Its package also includes EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics. Those services and catalog benefits may justify Ultimate for reasons beyond cloud hours, but Ultimate is still scheduled to have a 15-hour monthly cloud allowance after the November change.
Does Game Pass Ultimate still have unlimited cloud gaming?
Not under the published November 2026 structure. Ultimate is currently the plan with the highest included allowance, at 15 hours per month. The unlimited experience applies only before the new limits take effect for eligible subscribers. Afterward, an Ultimate member who uses all 15 included hours will need to stop cloud streaming, switch to local play where available, or buy additional cloud time when Xbox makes it available.
Which plan is best if you mostly play in the cloud?
Choose based on how often you expect to stream and whether the plan’s catalog and bundled services matter to you:
- Occasional cloud use: Essential may cover short trips or infrequent sessions, provided the 50-plus-game catalog contains the titles you want.
- Regular but mixed play: Premium offers a larger catalog and allowance while retaining local-console or PC play as the main option.
- Cloud-first use: Ultimate provides the most included time and the broadest catalog, but 15 hours is still a finite monthly budget. Heavy users should wait for Xbox’s extra-hour pricing before estimating the real monthly cost.
- Day-one releases and bundled services: Ultimate is the only listed plan with day-one games and the named EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics benefits.
Because Xbox has not released extra-hour prices, it is not possible to calculate a reliable break-even point between upgrading a plan and buying additional time. Compare the published catalog and services first, then revisit the decision when the Store pricing is available.

How many gaming sessions do the allowances represent?
The number of sessions depends on session length. If a player streams for 30 minutes at a time, the published allowances would equal up to 10 sessions on Essential, 20 on Premium or 30 on Ultimate. At one hour per session, they would equal up to 5, 10 or 15 sessions respectively. These are simple conversions of the published monthly totals; Xbox has not stated whether its meter rounds usage by the minute, by a larger increment or according to another rule.
Long sessions consume the allowance faster than short checks of a game. Players who use cloud gaming for a quick continuation of a campaign may fit more play occasions into the month than players who stream multi-hour weekend sessions, even though both use the same total number of hours.

Xbox describes cloud play on Windows PCs, phones, tablets, Xbox consoles, supported smart TVs, streaming devices, handhelds and selected virtual-reality headsets. Availability varies by device and region, so a device listed by Xbox is not a guarantee that the service is enabled in every market.
The current Xbox requirements include a supported device, a supported region and a compatible controller. Most games require a gamepad. Xbox identifies Microsoft Xbox controllers and supported third-party options such as 8BitDo, GameSir, Backbone and Sony DualSense. Xbox also directs users to mobile gaming accessories for phones and tablets.
Connection requirements
Xbox’s current cloud-gaming page lists a 10 Mbps minimum download speed and notes that some devices may require 20 Mbps for best quality. Xbox separately recommended at least 20 Mbps for a stable connection in 2025. These figures describe network capacity, not a guarantee of low latency or flawless streaming.

- Use a supported device and a supported region.
- Connect a compatible controller for games that require one.
- Test the connection on the network and device you will actually use; a faster connection elsewhere does not fix local Wi-Fi congestion.
- Allow for latency, which depends on distance to the service and network routing as well as download speed.
Selected free-to-play games, including Fortnite, can be played with a free Microsoft account, subject to Xbox’s supported-device and region requirements. A Game Pass subscription is not the only route to every cloud-playable free-to-play title.
How to prepare for the November change
- Identify your active plan. Check whether the account is on Essential, Premium or Ultimate, especially if a promotion or a bundled subscription has changed the plan name.
- Estimate actual cloud use. Record a typical week of streaming rather than counting every gaming hour, because locally installed play does not consume cloud time.
- Compare that use with the monthly allowance. Occasional players may fit within the included time; cloud-first players should expect to monitor the balance closely.
- Check Xbox’s final terms before November. Look for the reset date, rollover policy, upgrade treatment, Store prices, bundle sizes and expiration rules.
- Plan a fallback. Download games that support local play, use a compatible console or PC when possible, or decide in advance whether buying extra cloud time is worthwhile.
Xbox has said it will provide more information before the change takes effect, including how customers can check remaining time. Until that information is published, avoid relying on an assumed meter location or assumed purchase terms.

"Ultimate includes unlimited cloud gaming."
That is true only for the period before the November 2026 change for eligible subscribers. The scheduled post-change allowance is 15 hours per month.

"The limit blocks the game everywhere."
The policy limits cloud streaming. It does not by itself remove a locally installed game or prevent local play under the applicable license.
"Xbox has published the price for more hours."
Xbox has announced the Store-based purchase option but has not published the price, package sizes, expiry rules or complete market availability.
What to watch for in Xbox’s final announcement
The remaining practical questions are the ones that determine the real cost for frequent streamers: the exact monthly reset, minute-counting and rounding, carryover, treatment of plan changes, extra-hour prices, bundle expiration, supported games and countries, and the account screen used to view a balance. Xbox says those details will be provided before the November 2026 implementation.

For now, the reliable planning rule is simple: Essential includes 5 monthly cloud hours, Premium includes 10 and Ultimate includes 15 once the new structure starts. Anyone who regularly exceeds those amounts should treat the extra-time pricing as an unresolved part of the decision rather than assuming that a higher plan will remain unlimited.
