A suspected wrist fracture is assessed with an examination and usually X-rays. If the first images look normal or unclear but the wrist remains concerning on examination, a clinician may arrange additional imaging. Treatment depends on how the bone is positioned and whether the fracture is stable: options include a splint or cast, realignment, or—in some cases—surgery.
What a wrist fracture can involve
“Wrist fracture” often means a break near the wrist end of the radius, the forearm bone on the thumb side. Other bones around the wrist, including the scaphoid, can also fracture. The exact bone and the break’s position affect how clinicians investigate and treat it.

How clinicians assess a possible fracture
Examination
A clinician may check where the wrist is painful and tender, and look for swelling, bruising, or visible deformity. These findings can prompt imaging, but symptoms alone cannot confirm which bone is injured or how severe the break is.

X-rays are commonly used to assess the bones, often from several angles. For acute hand and wrist injuries, the American College of Radiology describes radiography as the initial imaging; a typical wrist series uses posteroanterior, lateral, and 45-degree semipronated oblique views. A two-view examination may not show enough detail.
#1 Best Overall
- Multi-Purpose: Our wrist support brace is effective for carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, arthritis or simply just a wrist sprain or strain. Effectively relieve pain and reduce numbness, morning stiffness symptoms
- Metal Splint Support: A removable wrist splint and two fixed plastic splints provide a high level of wrist support. Limits unconscious bending or twisting of the wrist during sleep, avoiding aggravation of inflammation or nerve compression due to improper posture
- Adjustable Size: Three Adjustable Straps with a hook and loop closure of this wrist brace for women, men and the elderly provide a custom fit for comfortable compression and stability. The extended design allows you to sleep without worrying about the wrist guard falling off
- Night and Day Support: This carpal tunnel wrist brace night support is ergonomically designed to force the wrist to a neutral position at night to prevent nighttime edema and increased pressure; it can support joint stability during the day and reduce the stimulation of repetitive movements
- Choose Your Size: Please double-check to ensure your carpal tunnel wrist brace is correct for your right hand or left hand, and refer to the size chart for a proper fit. Small/Medium for wrist circumference 5.4-5.9 inches; Medium/Large for wrist circumference 6-8 inches; Large/X-Large for wrist circumference 8.1-10 inches
A normal or uncertain first X-ray does not always rule out a fracture. Distal radius and scaphoid fractures can be difficult to see on initial radiographs. If examination and symptoms still raise concern, a clinician may consider additional X-ray views, CT, or MRI. Whether further imaging is appropriate depends on the individual assessment.
How treatment is chosen
The decision is based on the fracture’s position and stability, whether it involves the joint surface, and the person’s health, age, and activity demands, including work and hobbies. Age or activity alone does not determine treatment.

| Treatment | When it may be considered | What it involves |
|---|---|---|
| Splint or cast | A fracture that is stable or has not shifted out of position | Immobilizes the wrist while it heals. A Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust page describes a removable splint or temporary cast for an undisplaced distal radius fracture and says it may be kept in place for six weeks. That is an example for this specific injury, not a universal duration. |
| Reduction | Bone fragments have shifted and need to be brought back into a better position | A clinician realigns the fragments in a procedure called reduction. The treating team determines the appropriate method and next steps. |
| Surgery | Some fractures have alignment or other features for which an operation is considered | The choice is individualized; a broken wrist does not automatically require surgery. |
Follow the treating team’s instructions about immobilization and care. Do not substitute a self-selected splint for medical assessment or for a cast or splint prescribed to you.

When to seek urgent medical advice
NHS guidance advises urgent help for severe wrist pain, inability to move the wrist or hold things, a wrist that has changed shape or colour, or loss of feeling in part or all of the hand. These signs call for prompt assessment; they are not a way to diagnose a fracture at home.

What to expect from follow-up
Follow-up allows the treating team to review the injury and the chosen treatment. If pain or other concerns persist despite an initial X-ray that did not show a break, contact a clinician for reassessment rather than assuming that imaging has ruled out every fracture. Recovery instructions and the length of immobilization vary with the specific injury and plan.
