If your Dell laptop touchscreen is not responding, first confirm that the exact configuration has a touch display. Then restart, check the screen and protector, and work through Windows device settings, calibration, updates, and Dell’s diagnostics—in that order. The steps below also help with intermittent touch and taps that land in the wrong place.
Dell’s touchscreen troubleshooting guide identifies lack of touch hardware, driver or configuration issues, and calibration problems among possible causes.

1. Confirm the Dell laptop has a touchscreen
Not every configuration of a Dell XPS, Inspiron, or Latitude includes a touch display. Before changing drivers, search Windows for View pen and touch info and open it. Under Device Specifications, check Pen and touch.

Software troubleshooting cannot add touch capability.
- If Windows reports pen or touch input, continue with the checks below.
If the result is unclear, check the original configuration or look up the laptop’s specifications on Dell Support using its Service Tag or model. Confirm the exact configuration, since a model name can cover both touch and non-touch versions.

2. Restart, then check the screen and protector
Save open work and restart Windows. A temporary problem may clear after a restart. If touch still does not work, shut down the laptop and disconnect its AC adapter before cleaning the display.
- Gently remove dust with a soft, clean microfiber cloth lightly dampened with water.
- Let the screen dry before reconnecting power and turning the laptop on. Avoid detergents, which can leave a film.
- Check whether a screen protector is designed for capacitive touch and is fitted without air bubbles. A protector that is incompatible or has bubbles can prevent touches from registering.
Test the screen again after cleaning and checking the protector. If the issue persists, move on to Windows settings.

3. Enable or reinstall the touchscreen device
In Windows, the touchscreen appears in Device Manager as HID-compliant touch screen. Dell says recent Windows versions, including Windows 10 and Windows 11, include touchscreen drivers; Windows Update can provide an applicable driver if one is needed.
- Press Windows+R, enter
devmgmt.msc, and press Enter to open Device Manager. - Expand Human Interface Devices and find HID-compliant touch screen.
- If the device is disabled, right-click it, choose Enable device, and test touch input.
- If it is enabled but the screen remains unresponsive, right-click it, choose Uninstall device, and restart the laptop. Windows should detect the device again during startup.
If you cannot find the device, verify touch capability first. A missing entry by itself does not establish whether the laptop has touch hardware or has a device or driver problem.

4. Calibrate if touches register in the wrong place
Calibration is for inaccurate touch response—for example, when a tap registers away from the point you touched. It is not the first fix for a screen that registers no touches at all.
- Open Control Panel and go to Hardware and Sound > Tablet PC Settings > Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input.
- If prompted, select the display and choose touch input.
- Tap each crosshair as it appears, then save the calibration data.
Do not change the display resolution during calibration. Test the screen after saving.

Install available Windows updates and restart. Then use Dell Support to run its touchscreen diagnostic:
- Open Dell’s touchscreen troubleshooting guide and identify the laptop by model or Service Tag on Dell Support.
- Open Diagnostics, then select Custom Component Test > Select individual components > Monitor & screen > Touch screen.
- Run the test and follow its prompts.
Dell treats a failed touchscreen test as a reason to contact Technical Support for repair options. If the test passes but touch still fails, continue with the sleep-related and model-specific checks below.

6. If touch fails after sleep, check its power setting
If the touchscreen works until the laptop wakes from sleep, check whether Windows is turning off the device to save power:
- In Device Manager, expand Human Interface Devices and open HID-compliant touch screen properties.
- If there is a Power Management tab, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
- Select OK, then test touch after the laptop wakes from sleep.
7. Check model-specific Dell updates
Dell recommends keeping applicable BIOS, graphics (GPU), Dell monitor-driver, and touchscreen-firmware updates current. Availability varies by model: Dell notes that touchscreen firmware is not available for every Dell laptop or monitor.
Use the support page for the exact laptop model or Service Tag and install only updates listed for that device. Do not install firmware intended for a different model.

If the earlier checks do not resolve the issue, Dell places System Restore before factory defaults in its troubleshooting path. Treat factory recovery as a last resort: it deletes user data, so back up important files first. If the problem remains, contact Dell Technical Support. Without the exact model or Service Tag, the appropriate repair or replacement part cannot be identified.
