When a PS Plus Game Catalog game leaves, your catalog access ends—even if the game is still installed—but that does not by itself mean your save is deleted. A save and a game license are separate. What you can do with the save later depends on where it is stored, whether you preserved it, and whether the game is still available to buy in a compatible version.
What happens when a PS Plus game leaves the catalog?
PlayStation Plus Extra includes access to the Game Catalog, and Premium includes Extra benefits. Sony says some Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles have an end date and are removed from the service. Once a game leaves, the catalog no longer gives you access to play it; having downloaded it does not turn it into a permanent purchase. Check Sony’s US catalog listings for the current lineup and title-specific dates, which can change.

The subscription entitlement and your saved data are different things. Losing catalog access does not, by itself, establish that your save was erased. Sony describes saves as being stored separately from the catalog license, but its general guidance does not promise that every save will be retained forever.
Access and saves in common situations

Sony’s save-transfer guide explains the different storage locations and transfer options. It specifically says saved data is not automatically transferred between streamed and downloaded games.

Where your save is stored depends on how you played
If you downloaded the game
The save is stored on your PS5 or PS4 console. PlayStation Plus cloud storage can be used to upload it and download it on another device. If you later regain access to the game, you may need to download the cloud copy to the relevant console rather than expect a save from streaming to appear automatically.
If you streamed the game
The save is stored in PlayStation’s game-streaming storage. Sony documents copying streamed saved data to Online Storage and back. Streaming and downloaded versions use distinct save locations unless you transfer the data through the supported cloud-storage process.

If you change platform or play mode
PS4, PS5, and PC streaming have different save-management steps. A save transfer does not itself grant a license to play the game, and transfer availability does not guarantee that every edition or platform version uses a compatible save.

Before a removal date—or before switching devices or play modes—confirm that the latest save is uploaded where cloud transfer applies. Keep the local and cloud copies; do not delete saved data merely because the catalog entitlement ended.

- For a downloaded PS4 game save on PS5: Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4) > Upload or Delete from Console Storage > Upload to Cloud Storage.
- For a downloaded save on PS4: Open Library, highlight the game, press OPTIONS, then select Upload/Download Saved Data > Upload.
- For a streamed save on PS5 or PS4: While streaming, use the PlayStation Plus card or Application Saved Data Management to manage saved data. The precise steps vary by console and play mode; follow Sony’s current platform-specific instructions.
- To restore a downloaded save: Select the relevant cloud save and download it to console storage. For streamed play, copy the save back to Game Streaming Storage.
Menu names can change, and PC streaming has its own instructions, so consult Sony’s live guide for the current button-by-button process. Cloud transfer preserves data in a usable location; it does not restore catalog access.
Can buying the game restore access to your save?
Potentially. In its May 23, 2022 guide, Sony said that if a title is available on PlayStation Store and you purchase it, you can access the save again, provided you have not deleted the saved data. That is not a guarantee that every removed title remains for sale, or that saves work across every edition or platform version. What about the seven-day PSN validation rule?
Sony’s May 23, 2022 guide said that downloaded Extra, Premium, and Deluxe catalog games needed PSN validation every seven days, while that requirement did not apply to Essential monthly downloadable games. This is a dated policy statement, not evidence that the same interval applies universally today. Check current PlayStation terms if offline access matters; in any case, validation does not extend a title’s catalog availability after its removal.

Check the exact game before making a plan
- Find the title’s current catalog status and announced removal date in your region.
- Confirm whether the exact title remains available to buy on the regional PlayStation Store.
- Identify whether your save is local to a downloaded PS4 or PS5 game, or stored for streaming.
- Before changing devices or play modes, upload and restore the save using the applicable cloud-storage steps.
- Check the platform and edition you would play if you purchase the game; save compatibility is not guaranteed across all versions.
