World of Warcraft gear is assigned an upgrade track when it is created. That track determines which ranks the item can reach and which tier of Crest the upgrade vendor will request. Flightstones (or the current season’s equivalent) pay the ordinary cost, while Crests unlock higher power ranges. Because Blizzard changes rank names, caps, and item-level breakpoints between seasons, the upgrade vendor’s tooltip is the final authority for any item in your current patch.
What an upgrade track means
An upgrade track is a progression band attached to an item at creation. A dropped or crafted item starts on the track that matches its starting item level; improving it does not move it to a different track. An item that begins as Veteran remains a Veteran-track item even after you buy every available rank on that track.

Blizzard’s original universal model used Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, and Hero tracks. Later seasons added Myth ranks or extended existing tracks. The number of ranks, the item-level range covered by each track, and the names used for Crest tiers are season data, not permanent rules. Read the track and current rank directly in the item tooltip and upgrade window.

- Track: the item’s fixed progression band, such as Explorer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Myth where that season includes it.
- Rank: the item’s current position within that band and the number of upgrades still available.
- Item level: the power value shown on the item. It rises when you purchase ranks, but the item remains on its original track.
The track therefore answers “How far can this piece go?” The rank answers “How far has it already gone?” The vendor combines those answers with your available currencies to show the next legal upgrade.

How the upgrade vendor calculates a purchase
Use the following process whenever you are unsure what an item needs:
- Open the item’s tooltip and record its track and current rank.
- At an Item Upgrade vendor, place the item in the upgrade slot or select it from the eligible list.
- Read the next-rank preview. It shows the resulting item level, the general-currency cost, and the Crest tier, if any.
- Check that you have enough Flightstones or the season’s replacement currency and the named Crest tier.
- Confirm the purchase only after checking whether the slot qualifies for a catch-up discount and whether the upgrade is worth your remaining weekly cap.
The preview is authoritative for that item in that patch. Generic charts from an earlier season can be useful for understanding the system, but they cannot safely replace the live tooltip because Blizzard has changed both rank structures and costs.
The currencies: general upgrades and Crests
Flightstones and their seasonal equivalents
Flightstones were the general currency in Dragonflight’s universal system. Blizzard described them as obtainable from quests, treasures, raids, dungeons, and outdoor activities. They paid the routine part of an upgrade, including many lower-rank purchases that did not require a Crest.

Crests gate the higher ranges
Crests are tiered currency. Lower tiers are used for lower tracks and ranks; higher tiers are required as you enter Champion, Hero, and Myth progression. The item’s upgrade window names the tier it accepts, so you do not need to memorize a universal mapping.
For Season 3 of Dragonflight, Blizzard moved Crests out of physical bags and into the currency tab. The change was intended to prevent inventory clutter and make the character’s weekly progress visible in one place. If you cannot find a Crest item in your bags, check the currency tab before assuming it was lost.
Historical cost example
Blizzard’s 2023 Dragonflight Season 3 design used a standardized cost of 15 Crests for an upgrade step. That figure describes that design, not a guaranteed Midnight price. The live vendor may show a different amount, a different currency name, or no Crest requirement for a particular rank.

Weekly caps, trade-ups, and fallback rewards
Crests are pacing currency. A season can limit how many of each tier you earn in a week so that gear progression is spread across activities and reset cycles. Blizzard’s documented Dragonflight Season 3 plan capped each Crest type at 90 per week. That number is historical; Midnight’s cap must be read from current patch notes or the in-game currency panel.

What happens at a cap
When a tier is capped, an activity that would normally award it may provide a fallback reward instead. The precise fallback depends on the season and activity. The important point is that a capped character is not necessarily receiving nothing; the reward can be converted or redirected under that season’s rules.
Trading up unused lower tiers
Blizzard also documented Crest trade-ups. Once a character has no remaining use for a lower tier, the system can allow that currency to be exchanged for a higher tier. The eligibility condition matters: you generally need to have exhausted the lower tier’s useful upgrade range first. The trade-up ratio and interface are season-specific, so inspect the currency panel or vendor rather than relying on an old ratio.
Catch-up discounts and slot history
Upgrade discounts prevent a newly acquired item from costing as much as a long-developed slot. Blizzard documented half-cost upgrades and removal of the Crest requirement within the discounted range, up to the best item level the character had previously reached in that slot.

If your character previously upgraded a helmet to a high item level and later replaces it with a lower helmet on a compatible track, the replacement can qualify for the catch-up range. The vendor decides the exact boundary and displays the discounted cost before you buy.

How to use a discount efficiently
- Compare the replacement item’s current level with the highest level previously reached in that equipment slot.
- Look for a reduced general-currency cost in the preview.
- Confirm whether the Crest line has disappeared for the discounted ranks.
- Spend scarce higher-tier Crests only after the item reaches the point where the discount ends.
Do not assume that a discount transfers between unrelated slots or that it lasts forever. It is a catch-up rule tied to the character’s slot history and the season’s implementation.

The item is already at its track maximum
A full rank indicator or a missing next-rank entry means the track has no further upgrade in that season. A higher Crest tier cannot convert the item into a different track.
You are missing the required Crest tier
Having plenty of Flightstones does not bypass a Crest gate. The vendor may show a general-currency price while also disabling the purchase until you obtain the named tier. Earn that tier through the activities assigned to it, or use an available trade-up if the season permits one.

Your general currency is insufficient
Check the currency tab and the exact amount shown in the preview. If the balance is lower than the displayed cost, complete activities that award the current season’s general currency. Older Flightstones in another season may not satisfy a new currency requirement.
The item is not eligible for the vendor
Some equipment can be excluded because of its category, source, or special rules. Reopen the item’s tooltip and compare it with another eligible piece. If the vendor does not list the item at all, the issue is eligibility rather than a missing currency.
You are reading an outdated chart
Ranks and breakpoints change with seasons and events. If an external guide conflicts with the live preview, follow the preview and consult the current Blizzard patch notes for the explanation.
How to choose which pieces to upgrade first
When several items are eligible, compare them on five axes rather than spending currencies in drop order.

A practical priority order
- Use discounted ranks on important slots while the discount is available.
- Upgrade a weapon or other build-defining item when its next rank produces a meaningful breakpoint.
- Spend a scarce high-tier Crest on the piece with the largest remaining useful track, not automatically on the newest drop.
- Leave room for the next reset if your chosen item would consume most of the weekly cap.
Season changes: what carries over and what does not
The universal model is consistent enough to learn, but its numbers are deliberately adjustable. The following examples show why old guides need qualification.

For Midnight in 2026, exact Crest names, rank counts, item-level breakpoints, cap values, and WarBand behavior should be confirmed in the current patch notes and the item-upgrade tooltip. Earlier Blizzard explanations establish the model, but they do not provide a reliable Midnight table.
A 30-second checklist before every purchase
- Read the item’s track and current rank.
- Read the next rank’s item level and maximum.
- Note the named Crest tier and the remaining weekly cap.
- Check the general-currency balance and whether the price is discounted.
- Decide whether the slot is more valuable than another eligible upgrade.
- Confirm that any uncapping, extra-rank, or Warbound rule is active now rather than tied to an expired event.
This process answers the common questions—what track an item is on, which Crest it needs, where the general currency went, and why a purchase is blocked—without relying on season-specific assumptions that may no longer apply.
