Modern retail World of Warcraft offers more race choices because it includes the original roster plus races added through later expansions and allied-race systems. Forever, however, uses its smaller roster to permit unusual combinations such as Orc Mage and Undead Paladin, and Blizzard says it has no current plan to add expansion races.
Forever’s roster at a glance
Blizzard’s published race/class matrix lists ten faction entries in WoW: Forever: five for the Horde and five for the Alliance. Skyborne is one race concept with a different identity on each faction, so the list contains nine distinct race names while presenting ten faction-specific choices. The matrix is the authoritative description of the currently announced roster.

| Faction | Playable entries | Distinctive point |
|---|---|---|
| Horde | Orc, Tauren, Troll, Undead, Windshaper Skyborne | Skyborne can become shamans in the Windshaper identity. |
| Alliance | Dwarf, Gnome, Human, Night Elf, High Order Skyborne | Skyborne can become mages in the High Order identity. |
Forever also has nine available classes, according to Blizzard’s announcement. That number describes the class roster, not the number of race-class pairings. The practical choice is therefore shaped by two separate questions: whether the race you want exists at all, and whether that race can take the class you want.

Horde races
- Orc: The classic Horde race is present, with the newly highlighted option to play an Orc Mage.
- Tauren: Tauren remain part of the core Horde selection.
- Troll: Trolls are included and can take the newly highlighted Warlock combination.
- Undead: Undead are playable and can become Paladins, an explicitly highlighted combination.
- Windshaper Skyborne: This is the Horde expression of the new Skyborne race. Windshapers can become shamans.
The Horde list keeps the recognizable Classic-era foundation while opening class options that were not available in the classic baseline. It is a curated selection rather than an attempt to reproduce every race introduced during the live game’s expansion history.

Alliance races
- Dwarf: Dwarves are playable, including the newly highlighted Dwarf Shaman combination.
- Gnome: Gnomes are included and can become Priests in the combinations Blizzard called out.
- Human: Humans remain available, with Human Hunter listed as a notable new pairing.
- Night Elf: Night Elves are part of the Alliance roster.
- High Order Skyborne: This is the Alliance expression of Skyborne. High Order Skyborne can become mages.
Because the Alliance has the same number of faction entries as the Horde, the headline difference is not faction size. The difference is how Forever uses those entries: it retains familiar races, adds Skyborne as its own race concept, and broadens selected class combinations inside the compact menu.
Why Skyborne appears twice but counts as one race concept
Skyborne is the element most likely to confuse players comparing lists. Blizzard describes Skyborne as a new playable race, but the faction matrix gives it two names: Horde Windshapers and Alliance High Order Skyborne. These are not two unrelated races added to inflate the roster. They are faction-specific identities for the same Skyborne concept.
| Skyborne identity | Faction | Class direction highlighted by Blizzard |
|---|---|---|
| Windshapers | Horde | Can become shamans |
| High Order Skyborne | Alliance | Can become mages |
This design gives each faction a distinct fantasy while preserving a shared race idea. When you count the character-creation screen, you will see a Skyborne choice on each side. When you count unique race concepts, Skyborne is one addition. Both descriptions are correct as long as the counting method is stated.
What makes Forever’s race-class combinations different
Forever’s smaller race roster does not mean a smaller-feeling character-creation system in every respect. Blizzard specifically highlighted combinations that change familiar assumptions about which classes belong to which races. The announced examples are:
| Race | Class | Faction context | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orc | Mage | Horde | Combines a traditionally martial Horde identity with arcane magic. |
| Troll | Warlock | Horde | Expands the class fantasy available to a familiar Horde race. |
| Undead | Paladin | Horde | Creates a deliberately unexpected pairing within the Horde roster. |
| Human | Hunter | Alliance | Adds a notable class option to the Alliance’s most familiar race. |
| Gnome | Priest | Alliance | Broadens the class identity associated with Gnomes. |
| Dwarf | Shaman | Alliance | Introduces a new class direction for an Alliance race. |
The table is a list of combinations Blizzard chose to emphasize; it is not a complete nine-class matrix. If a specific pairing is decisive for your character, verify it against the current in-game creation screen or the latest official matrix rather than assuming that every unlisted combination is available or unavailable.

For players, this creates an important distinction. Retail has more race names, but Forever can offer more novelty per familiar race because its rules deliberately loosen selected race-class boundaries. An Orc Mage or Undead Paladin is a meaningful reason to choose Forever even when the overall roster is smaller.
How modern retail WoW’s roster differs
Modern retail World of Warcraft has accumulated playable races over many years. Its catalog combines the original faction races with races introduced by later expansions and with allied-race systems. That expansion-built structure is why retail presents a much broader menu than Forever.
There is no single date-stamped, authoritative total suitable for quoting here. Retail’s available list can change as content is added, and counts can vary depending on whether a source treats faction versions, allied races, or shared race concepts as separate entries. The safe comparison is qualitative: retail is broad and expansion-built; Forever is compact and rooted in the Classic-era foundation.
| Question | WoW: Forever | Modern retail WoW |
|---|---|---|
| Roster shape | Five Horde entries and five Alliance entries, with Skyborne represented on both sides. | Original races plus later expansion and allied-race additions. |
| Expansion races | Not part of the announced playable plan. | Core to the modern catalog’s breadth. |
| Class roster | Nine available classes, according to Blizzard’s announcement. | Uses the live retail class roster; the exact comparison depends on the current retail version. |
| Design emphasis | Curated Classic-rooted identity and unusual combinations. | Long-running expansion continuity and maximum race variety. |
That distinction answers the practical question behind most comparisons. If “more choices” means more different race names, retail wins. If it means the chance to play an unexpected class on a familiar Classic race, Forever’s targeted combinations can be more appealing.
Are Blood Elves, Goblins, or Vulpera in WoW: Forever?
No. Forever’s announced race list contains Orc, Tauren, Troll, Undead, Dwarf, Gnome, Human, Night Elf, and Skyborne identities. Blood Elves, Goblins, Vulpera, and other races associated with later expansion content are not on that list.

The reason is policy rather than an accidental omission. Forever’s documented rule is that races introduced from The Burning Crusade onward will not be playable in Forever. That excludes the expansion-era additions that make retail’s race menu substantially larger.

If you prefer the foundational Warcraft setting and can work within the nine named race concepts, Forever is designed for that narrower experience.
Why Blizzard is keeping Forever’s race roster narrow
Blizzard’s stated direction is to build Forever around the foundational lore of Warcraft in its own continuity instead of retelling the sequence of modern expansion race stories. TechRadar Gaming reported on 11 October 2026 that Blizzard said: “We have no plans to add races from WoW’s expansions at this time.”
“At this time” matters. It leaves room for the team to visit later locations or develop new ideas in a Forever-specific way, but it does not promise that retail races will eventually be ported over. The current roadmap therefore should be read as a boundary: expansion races are outside the announced plan, while Forever’s own continuity can still develop independently.
This approach also explains the Skyborne design. Rather than importing a retail race with an existing expansion storyline, Forever introduces a new race concept and gives each faction its own identity. The result is a roster that feels familiar at the faction level without being a simple copy of retail’s accumulated catalog.

Race breadth versus race-class freedom
“Which game has more race and class choice?” has two answers because race choice and class choice are different measurements.
Retail leads on race breadth
Retail offers the larger selection of race identities because its roster includes the original races plus expansion and allied-race additions. A player choosing primarily by appearance, heritage, or access to a particular later-race fantasy will find more options there.
Forever emphasizes combinations inside a smaller set
Forever’s nine classes and its highlighted cross-faction combinations make the individual pairings more distinctive. Orc Mage, Troll Warlock, Undead Paladin, Human Hunter, Gnome Priest, and Dwarf Shaman are the clearest examples announced by Blizzard. The game is not trying to win a raw race-count contest; it is trying to make its smaller set support different character fantasies.
Neither game automatically offers more of everything
A larger race catalog does not prove that every race-class pairing is available, just as a compact catalog does not prove that every pairing is restricted. Retail wins the breadth question. Forever’s advantage is the deliberate expansion of selected combinations within its Classic-rooted roster.
How to choose between Forever and retail
- Start with the race you cannot compromise on. If that race is one of the Forever entries, continue. If it is an expansion-era or allied race, retail is the match under the current Forever plan.
- Check the class pairing. For Forever, use the official matrix or the character-creation screen. Pay particular attention to the announced options if you want Orc Mage, Troll Warlock, Undead Paladin, Human Hunter, Gnome Priest, Dwarf Shaman, or one of the Skyborne identities.
- Decide how much expansion continuity you want. Retail carries the long expansion history. Forever follows a separate, foundational continuity and does not currently plan to add expansion races.
- Choose your priority: variety or curation. Select retail when the largest possible race menu is the deciding factor. Select Forever when a Classic-era atmosphere, a focused faction roster, or an unusual class combination matters more than access to later races.
- Recheck the live rules before creating a character. The published list describes the announced plan, while an in-game matrix is the final practical check for a specific pairing and version.
Decision examples
You want an Orc Mage
Forever is the natural fit because Blizzard specifically lists Orc Mage as a new and notable combination. Retail may offer a larger overall roster, but its breadth is not the reason to choose this character concept.
You want an Undead Paladin
Forever directly addresses this concept in its highlighted combinations. It is an example of the game trading roster size for freedom inside the races it keeps.
You want a Blood Elf, Goblin, or Vulpera
Choose retail under the current plan. Those expansion-era races are outside Forever’s announced playable roster.
You want Skyborne but are undecided on faction
Choose the Horde for the Windshaper identity and its shaman direction, or the Alliance for the High Order Skyborne identity and its mage direction. The faction choice changes the presentation and class path attached to Skyborne.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You want the broadest possible list of race names
Retail is the clear choice because its catalog incorporates later expansion and allied-race additions. Forever intentionally does not pursue that breadth.
What is confirmed, and what should not be inferred
- Confirmed: ten faction entries are listed in Forever’s matrix: five Horde and five Alliance.
- Confirmed: Skyborne is one new race concept with Windshaper and High Order identities.
- Confirmed: Blizzard announced nine available classes.
- Confirmed: Blizzard highlighted six new or notable race-class combinations: Orc Mage, Troll Warlock, Undead Paladin, Human Hunter, Gnome Priest, and Dwarf Shaman.
- Confirmed: races introduced from The Burning Crusade onward are not part of Forever’s announced playable plan.
- Not established here: a precise current retail race total, a complete Forever race-class matrix, numerical racial bonuses, or a final promise about future additions.
Keeping those boundaries clear prevents a common comparison error: treating a faction-entry count as a universal race total, or treating a handful of highlighted combinations as the complete list of legal pairings.
Bottom line: which game offers more choice?
Modern retail WoW offers more race choice in the straightforward sense: its roster includes the original races plus later expansion and allied-race additions. Forever offers fewer race identities, but its focused design adds Skyborne and opens selected combinations that change what familiar races can become. Choose retail for maximum race breadth and access to expansion-era identities; choose Forever for a Classic-rooted setting, a curated Horde-and-Alliance roster, and unusual pairings such as Orc Mage or Undead Paladin.
