Honor and Conquest: what each currency is for
Honor is the entry and participation currency
Honor is earned by taking part in PvP, including battleground-style activities and rated modes. It is associated with the Honor gear track and is the currency most players encounter first when they begin gearing for PvP. Regular battlegrounds are the straightforward way to build Honor without needing a rating or an organized team.

Blizzard has changed the exact costs, caps, and item levels over time, so a Dragonflight-era Honor table should not be treated as a current value for The War Within or Midnight.

Conquest is tied to rated progression
Conquest comes from rated PvP activity and supports the Conquest gear and progression track. It is the currency associated with higher-end PvP equipment and, in some seasons, weapon-token achievements. A character’s Conquest total can itself be an achievement requirement: The War Within Season 2’s Prized Weapons of Conquest required 2,500 Conquest earned on that character and awarded two weapon tokens.
Conquest does not replace Honor. The two currencies serve different tracks, and a player may earn both while playing rated content. The amount available per week, the price of an item, and the resulting item level are all season-specific.
| Currency | Primary source | Progression role | What changes by season |
|---|---|---|---|
| Honor | Battlegrounds, Battleground Blitz, and other PvP participation | Honor PvP gear track and participation-based progression | Cap, costs, item levels, and available items |
| Conquest | Rated PvP activities | Conquest gear track, rated progression, and some weapon-token achievements | Cap, costs, item levels, and achievement thresholds |
What battlegrounds and Battleground Blitz reward
Regular battlegrounds
Standard battlegrounds are the accessible team-PvP route for Honor. They do not require a rating milestone to enter, making them a practical starting point for a new character or a player returning after a break. The reward is participation-focused: you play the objective, finish the match, and receive Honor according to the rules of the active season.
Regular battlegrounds should therefore be viewed primarily as an Honor activity. They are not a substitute for the rated Conquest path when your goal is a rating-gated title, a rated achievement, or the season’s top PvP gear rewards.
Battleground Blitz
Battleground Blitz uses battleground-style objectives but adds a rated and achievement layer. Blizzard has given the mode its own achievements, titles, pennants, and faction-specific top-percentile rewards in seasonal reward lists. The named seasonal title in the cited The War Within Season 1 structure was Strategist; that season required 25 Rated Battleground Blitz wins at Elite for the title.

Blitz also has an important Great Vault interaction. Blizzard stated that Honor gained from the Battleground Blitz Brawl contributes to the PvP track in the Great Vault. That makes Blitz more than a source of match rewards: it can also help fill the weekly PvP activity requirement represented in the Vault.
How battleground options compare
| Activity | Main currency or progress | Rating or win requirement | Great Vault contribution | Typical seasonal extras |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular battleground | Honor | No rated milestone required | Depends on the current activity rules; do not assume ordinary battleground Honor has the same treatment as Blitz | Honor-track rewards and match participation |
| Battleground Blitz | Honor, with rated progression | Seasonal rating, win, and percentile requirements may apply | Blizzard says Honor from the Battleground Blitz Brawl contributes to the PvP Great Vault track | Strategist, pennants, faction-themed titles, and other seasonal achievements |
| Rated arena or rated team mode | Conquest and rating | Rating and, for some rewards, a minimum number of wins | Uses the rated PvP rules for the current season | Gear appearances, titles, mounts, weapon rewards, and achievements |
| Rated Solo Shuffle | Conquest and rating | Shuffle-specific rating, round, and percentile requirements | Uses the current rated PvP rules | Legend, healer achievements, toys, titles, and top-percentile rewards |
How rating unlocks PvP gear appearances and prestige rewards
Rating is not simply a matchmaking number. Seasonal rating milestones can unlock cosmetic armor appearances and prestige rewards, while some of the most desirable titles require both a rating and a minimum number of wins. The exact thresholds below are from Blizzard’s The War Within Season 1 announcement and are a historical example of how the ladder was structured.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Season 1 milestone | Rating | Reward pattern in Blizzard’s table |
|---|---|---|
| Combatant I | 1,000 | First rated cosmetic milestone and associated armor rewards |
| Challenger I | 1,400 | Additional rated appearance rewards |
| Rival I | 1,800 | Higher-tier appearance rewards and activity-specific achievements |
| Duelist | 2,100 | Prestige cosmetic rewards |
| Elite | 2,400 or higher | Elite appearances and eligibility for top seasonal rewards |
These thresholds explain why a player can earn useful gear without reaching the top of the ladder, yet still have meaningful goals after the basic gear track is complete. They also show why copying a rating number from one season into another is unsafe: Blizzard can change the ladder’s reward breakpoints and attach different pieces or cosmetics to each rank.
Rating alone is not always enough
Several prestige rewards combine a rating with a win count. In the cited Season 1 rules, Gladiator required 50 3v3 wins at Elite. Battleground Blitz used a different requirement: 25 Rated Battleground Blitz wins at Elite for Strategist. A character that reaches the rating but does not complete the required wins does not satisfy the full achievement condition.
Top-percentile titles use a similar model. The season specifies a percentile of the ladder and a minimum number of wins, so simply reaching a rating near the cutoff is not a guarantee. The percentile is calculated for that season and mode, which means the requirement can differ between 3v3, Battleground Blitz, and Solo Shuffle.

Rated Solo Shuffle has its own reward path
Rated Solo Shuffle should not be folded into a generic battleground explanation. Blizzard lists separate achievements and rewards for the mode, including a round-count requirement for Legend. In the cited season, Legend required 100 rated Solo Shuffle rounds at Elite.
Solo Shuffle also has healer-specific achievements at Rival I and top-0.1% seasonal titles with minimum-win conditions. Those requirements are attached to the Solo Shuffle ladder, not to a player’s overall PvP rating or to ordinary battleground wins. If you are pursuing one of these rewards, track the mode, rating, rounds, and wins shown in that mode’s achievement rather than assuming another activity will count.
What kinds of PvP rewards can you earn?
Across Blizzard’s official seasonal announcements, the reward catalog includes several distinct categories:
- Armor appearances: Honor and rated milestones can expose different visual tiers of the PvP armor set.
- Weapon effects and items: Seasonal lists have included weapon illusions and Conquest weapon tokens.
- Cosmetic accessories: Tabards, cloaks, and pennants can be tied to a rating, a mode, or a faction.
- Mounts: Seasonal PvP mount progress can require a specified number of wins or a season-long progress bar.
- Toys: Rated Solo Shuffle and other mode-specific achievements can award toys.
- Titles: Gladiator, Strategist, Legend, percentile titles, and other names are attached to particular ladders and seasons.
- Achievements: Conquest totals, rating milestones, wins, rounds, and healer-specific conditions can each be tracked separately.
The name and availability of every item in these categories are seasonal. A title listed for one season is not evidence that the same title, threshold, or cosmetic is available in the next.
A practical route from your first battleground to rated rewards
1. Start with the Honor track
Queue for regular battlegrounds or another accessible PvP activity and build Honor. Use the current PvP interface and vendors to see which Honor items are available, what they cost, and whether your character is at the active Honor cap. This avoids relying on an obsolete item-level table.

2. Move into rated content when you want Conquest
Choose the rated mode that matches your preferred play style: organized arena or team play, Battleground Blitz, or Solo Shuffle. Rated activity is the route to Conquest and rating-based achievements. Read the current season’s reward panel before committing to a goal, because each mode can have a different win, round, or percentile condition.
3. Track the requirement, not just the rating
For a cosmetic rank, monitor the rating milestone. For Gladiator, Strategist, Legend, or a percentile title, monitor the rating together with the required wins or rounds. The achievement criteria are the authoritative checklist for your character.
4. Use the Great Vault deliberately
If weekly PvP choices matter to you, include activities that count toward the current PvP Great Vault track. Blizzard specifically confirmed that Honor from Battleground Blitz contributes to that track. Do not generalize that statement to every battleground variant without checking the current tooltip or season rules.
5. Set a season deadline
Seasonal titles, mounts, appearances, rankings, and achievements can disappear from the earnable pool when the season closes. Leave time for the required wins or rounds rather than waiting until the final day.
What changes when a PvP season ends?
Season end affects the availability of seasonal rewards, not necessarily access to PvP queues. Blizzard’s transition notice for The War Within Season 3 said that the season’s rewards, titles, and rankings could no longer be earned after the cutoff. It also said players could still queue for rated PvP modes for Honor, Conquest, and progress toward the faction-themed Vicious Void Creeper mount for Horde or Alliance.
Best Value
In practical terms, a season can close the achievement race while leaving rated matches available for currency and ordinary progression. Always identify the season and region when discussing a deadline: the cutoff is tied to the live schedule, and regional maintenance timing can affect when the change takes effect.
Which numbers should you trust?
Older guides often present a fixed Honor cap, Conquest cap, vendor price list, or item-level table. Those numbers are snapshots, not permanent rules. Blizzard has not established one universal Midnight table that can safely be applied to every current season. Check the live PvP panel, the item tooltip, the relevant vendor, and the achievement text for your character’s region and season.
- Use the currency panel for your current Honor and Conquest totals and caps.
- Use the item tooltip or vendor window for the current cost and item level.
- Use the achievement criteria for rating, win, round, and percentile requirements.
- Use the season announcement and in-game calendar for the reward cutoff.
- Confirm whether a reward belongs to regular battlegrounds, Battleground Blitz, Solo Shuffle, or another rated ladder before assuming progress will transfer.
Common mistakes to avoid
Confusing Honor with Conquest
Honor is the broad participation currency and Conquest is the rated progression currency. A large Honor balance does not satisfy a Conquest achievement, and a Conquest total does not automatically unlock an Honor-track item.

Assuming every battleground has the same Vault treatment
Blizzard explicitly called out Battleground Blitz Honor as contributing to the PvP Great Vault track. Treat that as a mode-specific rule unless the current season says otherwise.
Stopping at the rating threshold
Some rewards require wins or rounds in addition to rating. Reaching Elite without the required 3v3 or Blitz wins leaves the corresponding title achievement incomplete.
Using a previous season’s cutoff
Seasonal rewards can become unavailable immediately after the announced transition. Check the current season’s end date and the region-specific maintenance window before planning a final push.
Bottom line
Play regular battlegrounds when you want accessible Honor, choose rated modes when you need Conquest and rating, and read each mode’s achievement for the exact combination of rating, wins, rounds, or percentile required. Battleground Blitz is the bridge between those goals because it combines battleground objectives with rated rewards and contributes Honor to the PvP Great Vault track. Treat every cap, price, item level, and seasonal deadline as current-season data rather than a permanent WoW rule.
