Yes—when you use a purpose-built gaming transmitter, wireless audio can be fast enough to keep gunshots, footsteps and other effects aligned with the picture in many competitive-gaming setups. That is practical parity, not proof that every wireless headset equals every wired connection or that wireless improves tournament results. The connection mode, host platform and test conditions determine the outcome.
The crucial distinction is a proprietary 2.4 GHz (or similar) USB dongle versus ordinary Bluetooth. Measured dongle delays in RTINGS’ gaming-headset tests are low enough for normal play, while its retested SBC Bluetooth sample averaged far more delay. Understanding that difference lets you choose and configure a headset without confusing a marketing label with end-to-end responsiveness.

What “parity” means for wireless gaming audio
In this context, parity means practical synchronization: the sound reaches your ears soon enough after the game renders an event that the two remain perceptually aligned. A wireless dongle still adds measurable delay; it is not literally instantaneous and it is not guaranteed to match a particular wired USB or analog path.

RTINGS reports 22–42 milliseconds of relative latency for the gaming-headset dongles in its Test Bench 1.6 work. The publisher says that spread is not significant enough to exclude those models from recommendation and describes dongle-connected headsets as capable of keeping audio and visuals in sync. Its “under 35 ms” figure is a good-value cutoff in RTINGS’ own rubric, not an industry standard or an esports rule.

Those measurements support responsiveness and synchronization under the stated test conditions. They do not show a higher win rate, faster human reaction time or a guaranteed advantage in a tournament. Audio output latency is also different from controller or mouse input latency, game-engine processing, display scan-out, microphone monitoring and the complete game-to-ear chain.
Why a gaming dongle is different from Bluetooth
A dedicated transmitter creates a direct radio link using the headset’s supplied USB receiver. It is engineered for short, predictable audio buffering and usually avoids the broad compatibility compromises of consumer Bluetooth. RTINGS summarizes the distinction this way: “A wireless connection via a separate transmitter or dongle can offer lower latency than traditional Bluetooth codecs.” See its test definitions and compatibility notes in the RTINGS wireless-dongle test.
Bluetooth audio must encode, transmit and decode through a codec negotiated by both devices. Codec choice, operating-system drivers and power-saving behavior can change the delay. In RTINGS’ retest of six gaming headsets, SBC Bluetooth latency averaged 170.3 ms. That is a sample average, not a universal Bluetooth specification; other codecs and devices can perform better. Gamers using these dual-mode headsets are also more likely to select the dedicated dongle while playing.

|---|---|---|
| Proprietary gaming dongle (often 2.4 GHz) | 22–42 ms across RTINGS’ tested gaming-headset group; under 35 ms is its “good value” rubric | Usually suitable for synchronized game audio when the transmitter and platform are supported |
| Bluetooth SBC | 170.3 ms average across six retested gaming headsets in RTINGS’ sample | Delay can be obvious in shooters, rhythm games and other timing-sensitive play |
| Wired USB or analog | Depends on the headset, interface, drivers and game; no universal value is established here | Often the simplest low-variable path, but a cable does not remove every other source of system latency |
Do not treat “wireless” as one performance category. A dual-mode headset can be fast over its transmitter and slow over Bluetooth, with the same earcups and different behavior.

How the latency numbers are produced
RTINGS measures relative latency rather than the total time from game event to perception. In its Windows test chain, a split audio signal runs through Voicemeeter, ASIO4All, a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 interface and Reaper. One route feeds the headset; another serves as a reference. Recorded waveforms are compared to estimate the headset path’s added delay. The method is described in the Test Bench 1.6 latency article.
Relative testing makes models easier to compare because the same reference chain is used, but it ties the result to that chain. RTINGS explicitly says its results reflect Windows under its test conditions. Applications can also compensate for buffering, and consoles were not included in the dongle wireless-performance measurement. The test page excludes microphone latency through the dongle as well.
For a player, the practical number is therefore conditional. A headset measured at 28 ms in RTINGS’ setup may behave differently with another USB controller, driver stack, console firmware, game or interference environment. The measurement is still useful as a controlled comparison; it is not a permanent device constant.
What the tested results actually show
Dongle latency is low enough for ordinary competitive play
The 22–42 ms range covers the gaming dongles RTINGS tested, and the publisher considers the spread too small to disqualify any of those models. That finding supports a straightforward buying conclusion: a reputable gaming headset used through its intended transmitter can keep effects aligned with on-screen action for many players, including competitive sessions.

It does not mean every 2.4 GHz implementation lands in that range. Antenna design, firmware, USB scheduling, radio congestion and host hardware differ. Look for a test that identifies the connection mode and method instead of relying on a box claim such as “ultra-low latency.”
Bluetooth’s larger delay explains the common complaints
The 170.3 ms SBC average in RTINGS’ six-headset sample is large enough to create an audible disconnect between a muzzle flash and its report or between a note and its timing window. Some phones, PCs and headsets negotiate lower-latency codecs, but codec support must exist at both ends and can change when a microphone profile is enabled. Bluetooth can be convenient for music or a second device; it is usually the wrong default for a timing-critical match when a gaming transmitter is available.
The Maxwell retest shows why one result is not universal
In its Audeze Maxwell performance investigation, RTINGS found substantial variation after changing computers and reconnecting the dongle. Its revised figures for that headset were approximately 34 ms over non-Bluetooth wireless and 18 ms over wired USB. An earlier run had reported 85 ms and 43 ms; RTINGS later called those values high and not representative. Across circumstances, its retests spanned 4–52 ms.
Audeze disputed parts of the interpretation in its customer-service explanation, saying some results did not make sense to the company and guessing that system latency was not handled correctly. That is a manufacturer’s criticism, not a settled correction to all RTINGS measurements. The episode demonstrates why you should record the platform, connection, firmware and test method alongside any latency number.

Will you notice the difference?
Perception depends on the whole chain and on the game. A 30 ms audio offset may be difficult to isolate in a cinematic adventure, while a rhythm title, parry window or rapid-fire shooter can make smaller offsets easier to detect. Display refresh, frame time, variable-refresh behavior and your own reaction time can dominate the experience.
Use a repeatable comparison if you are sensitive to delay: connect the same headset by its dongle and cable, use the same game and volume, and switch only one path at a time. Listen for transient events such as a weapon report or click rather than judging from voice chat, which has its own processing. If the wireless path feels late, verify that the game has not enabled an audio offset or that the headset has not silently fallen back to Bluetooth.
Compatibility matters as much as milliseconds
Before buying, confirm the exact headset variant and transmitter supplied. A USB-A receiver may need an adapter for a USB-C-only device, and an adapter does not guarantee that a console will recognize the headset. PC and PlayStation support does not imply Xbox support; console licensing, firmware and wireless protocols can differ between editions.

A practical buying checklist
Prioritize the connection you will actually use
- Choose a model with a dedicated gaming transmitter and published testing for that mode.
- Treat Bluetooth as a convenience connection unless the game and codec combination has been verified for latency.
- Distinguish wireless audio output from microphone monitoring and sidetone delay.
Match the platform and connector
- Verify PC, PlayStation or Xbox support for the specific regional or console variant.
- Confirm whether the receiver is USB-A, USB-C or both, and whether an adapter is included.
- Check whether console chat and firmware tools are supported, not just stereo playback.
Evaluate long-session hardware
Latency does not compensate for a headset you cannot wear. Compare weight, clamp force, pad material and heat. RTINGS notes that heavier planar-magnetic designs can cause fatigue. Read microphone tests for boom clarity and noise handling, because teammates experience communication quality separately from game-audio delay.
Check battery, switching and sound controls
Compare the model’s stated battery figure with your use pattern and whether it can charge while playing. Confirm if Bluetooth can run alongside the gaming link, whether simultaneous connections reduce features and how quickly the headset switches devices. EQ can emphasize footsteps or reduce bass, but tuning changes do not reduce transport latency.
RTINGS’ comparison, updated August 24, 2026, evaluates Audeze Maxwell 2, Razer BlackShark V3 Pro, SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7 and Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 3 across these dimensions. It is one publisher’s dated buying guide, not a universal ranking; use its platform, comfort, microphone, battery and dongle details as checkpoints in the full comparison.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSet up a low-latency wireless headset correctly
- Install the headset’s current firmware and desktop software before a competitive session.
- Plug the supplied transmitter into a compatible USB port. Use the extension cable if it places the receiver in clear line of sight.
- In the operating system’s sound settings, select the transmitter playback device and the headset’s intended chat input. Do not select a Bluetooth hands-free profile for game audio.
- In the game, choose the correct output and microphone devices, then disable any unnecessary audio virtualization while testing.
- Set the headset to its dongle or wireless mode; check the status light or software panel rather than assuming it switched automatically.
- Run a short practice test with transient sounds and verify that teammates hear the microphone without excessive sidetone delay.
- For a console, confirm that the receiver is recognized, chat permissions are enabled and the console is using the supported USB audio path.
Troubleshooting unexpected delay or dropouts
The headset sounds late
- Check that the dongle, not Bluetooth, is selected in both the operating system and game.
- Reconnect the receiver, restart the game and retest after firmware updates.
- Move the receiver away from a USB 3 hub, external drive or metal enclosure; use the supplied extension cable.
- Compare a second USB port and computer. RTINGS’ Maxwell investigation shows that host changes can materially alter measured latency.
Audio cuts out or becomes distorted
- Reduce physical distance and obstacles between headset and transmitter.
- Remove nearby 2.4 GHz congestion where practical, including unused wireless peripherals.
- Check battery level and disable aggressive power-saving modes during testing.
- If the problem appears only on one console, verify that the headset variant and receiver are licensed for that platform.
Chat works but game audio does not
Many systems expose separate playback and communications devices. Re-select the transmitter for game output, keep the microphone on the supported chat input, and check the game’s per-channel mixer. A Bluetooth hands-free profile can also take exclusive control and introduce both quality loss and delay.
The limits of “wireless equals wired” claims
No available evidence here establishes identical end-to-end latency for all wireless and wired headsets, all games or all platforms. The published figures are relative measurements from a Windows chain, with explicit exclusions for console wireless performance and dongle microphone latency. They are valuable for judging added audio delay, not for predicting a player’s tournament finish.
The defensible conclusion is narrower and more useful: a compatible proprietary gaming dongle can deliver low enough delay for synchronized play, and RTINGS’ tested group falls within a range it considers acceptable for recommendation. Bluetooth remains a separate, generally slower path. Buy for the transmitter, verify the platform and test your own complete setup before treating any number as proof of competitive parity.
