Wii emulation in a browser is possible because an Emscripten build of Dolphin runs its PowerPC emulation as WebAssembly, while JavaScript supplies the browser controls around it. The current wasm-dolphin design can boot Wii discs on its software-rendering path, but it is experimental: GameCube compatibility is stronger, Wii Remote input is not implemented, and speed varies by game, browser and computer.
What actually happens when a Wii game runs in a browser
A browser cannot execute Wii PowerPC code directly. The emulator first translates that code into instructions suitable for WebAssembly, the low-level virtual-machine format built into modern browsers. Dolphin’s C++ core is cross-compiled with Emscripten, and a custom PowerPC-to-WebAssembly dynamic just-in-time compiler (JIT) translates the emulated CPU instruction stream while the game is running.

JavaScript is the host layer rather than the emulator’s main CPU engine. It creates the canvas, starts workers, polls keyboard and standard gamepad devices, buffers audio, manages save states and mounts the disc image selected by the user. The game remains inside the browser sandbox; the page does not become a native Wii process.
This is an experimental browser port, not an equivalent replacement for the mature desktop Dolphin application. The best-supported title reported by the project is Super Smash Bros. Melee (a GameCube game). Broader GameCube support is described as widely booting, while Wii discs can boot and run through the software path. That wording does not mean every Wii title reaches full speed or has correct graphics, audio and controls.

The browser emulation pipeline, step by step
-
Compile Dolphin to WebAssembly
Emscripten cross-compiles Dolphin’s C++ source into a WebAssembly core plus JavaScript glue. The custom dynamic PPC JIT emits WebAssembly for the browser rather than native x86 or ARM instructions. This translation is what makes Wii and GameCube CPU code executable inside the browser’s security model.
-
Run the core in a worker
The page starts the emulator core in a Web Worker so emulation does not monopolize the page’s main thread. Emscripten’s WORKERFS can mount a user-supplied ISO or another accepted disc image without packaging a game inside the site. You select the file locally; the project does not bundle commercial games.
-
Produce and present frames
The emulated graphics pipeline creates a framebuffer, including the embedded-framebuffer (EFB) and external-framebuffer (XFB) processing expected by Dolphin. In the documented default, a software rasterizer performs rendering, then a WebGPU presenter displays the resulting image. WebGL or a Canvas 2D path can act as fallback.

Move controls and sound through browser APIs
JavaScript receives keyboard events and polls standard browser Gamepad API devices. It also handles audio buffering and browser-side services such as save states. The documented build does not implement Wii Remote input, so motion controls, pointing and the Wii Remote speaker are not available through that path.
-
Share memory between threads
Workers need shared WebAssembly memory for the threaded design. Browsers expose that memory through
SharedArrayBufferonly in a secure, cross-origin-isolated page. That security requirement is why deployment headers are part of the emulator setup rather than an optional optimization.
WebGL’s role—and why WebGPU also appears
WebGL is the browser’s JavaScript API for accelerated 2D and 3D graphics. It exposes an OpenGL ES-style interface on an HTML canvas and can use the device’s graphics hardware. In an emulator, WebGL can therefore be the presentation or rendering backend that turns a generated framebuffer into pixels on the page.
WebGL is not, by itself, the entire Wii graphics implementation in this port. The documented default uses a software rasterizer and then presents the processed framebuffer through WebGPU. WebGL and Canvas 2D are fallback presentation routes when the preferred path is unavailable. A browser with WebGL support is not automatically running a complete hardware-accelerated Dolphin renderer.
The project also describes a hardware WebGPU renderer as experimental. It is faster for some titles but broken for others, so enabling it is a compatibility trade-off rather than a universal upgrade. The software path is currently the documented way to test Wii discs.

| Graphics route | What it does in the browser port | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Software rasterizer | Renders the emulated graphics in software, then performs EFB/XFB processing before presentation | Documented default for Wii discs; performance depends heavily on the CPU |
| WebGPU presenter | Displays the software-rasterized framebuffer through WebGPU | Part of the default setup; requires a browser and device with WebGPU available |
| Hardware WebGPU renderer | Experimental hardware rendering path | Faster for some titles, broken for others according to the project |
| WebGL or Canvas 2D fallback | Alternative canvas presentation when the preferred route cannot be used | Improves compatibility, but does not guarantee Wii-level speed or complete renderer support |
Browser, server and header requirements
The documented build targets a desktop Chromium-based browser. Its default configuration expects WebGPU and SharedArrayBuffer, so a browser that lacks either feature may fail before a game starts or require a fallback path. Use a secure context—normally HTTPS—and do not open the page as a file:// URL.
Send these response headers from the origin that serves the emulator:
Cross-Origin-Opener-Policy: same-origin
Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy: require-corp
Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy: credentialless can be used instead of require-corp when that policy fits the resources your page loads. The page must also avoid a Permissions-Policy that blocks cross-origin-isolated. After deployment, test the browser’s crossOriginIsolated property; it should be true. If it is false, shared memory will not be available to the worker even when the emulator files themselves load.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Every cross-origin asset must satisfy the selected embedding policy. With require-corp, resources generally need an appropriate Cross-Origin-Resource-Policy or CORS response. A missing header on a script, worker, font or image can make the page appear blank or prevent the worker from starting.
How to try a Wii disc image
-
Prepare a legal dump
Create your own disc dump from media you own and keep it on your computer. The browser build does not supply game files. Dolphin’s DiscIO layer accepts formats including
.iso,.nkit.iso,.rvzand.ciso, along with other formats supported by that layer. -
Serve the page correctly
Host the emulator over HTTPS (or another secure context) and configure the COOP and COEP headers shown above. A local development server is suitable; double-clicking
index.htmlis not for the documented configuration. -
Confirm isolation and graphics support
Open the page in a desktop Chromium-based browser, verify that the page reports cross-origin isolation, and check that WebGPU is available for the default presenter. If WebGPU is unavailable, the build may fall back to WebGL or Canvas, but compatibility and speed can change.

Mount the image
Use the page’s file picker to select your dump. WORKERFS exposes the selected file to the emulation worker without requiring the site to upload or host a copy.

Map a controller
Connect a standard USB or Bluetooth gamepad that the browser recognizes, grant the page access if prompted, and assign its buttons in the emulator’s input settings. Keyboard controls are available through JavaScript event handling. Do not expect Wii Remote or motion-control mapping in this documented build.
-
Start and diagnose conservatively
Boot the title first with the software renderer. If it fails, try another accepted dump format or a different browser build before changing graphics options. A game that boots is not necessarily playable: check frame pacing, audio, graphics correctness and whether required controls are available.
What works today, and what does not
| Area | Documented status | What that means for you |
|---|---|---|
| GameCube compatibility | Strongest area; broad support is reported to boot widely | GameCube software is the most realistic place to start testing |
| Wii disc booting | Wii discs can boot and run on the software path | Individual titles still need their own compatibility and speed checks |
| Best-supported example | Super Smash Bros. Melee can approach full speed on a modern desktop browser | This is a project-reported example, not a promise for Wii games |
| Wii Remote | Not implemented in the documented build | Games that require pointing, motion or infrared aiming may be unplayable |
| Hardware WebGPU renderer | Experimental; faster for some titles and broken for others | Use it as an experiment, not as the default compatibility solution |
| CPU memory access | Native fast-memory traps are unavailable in the browser sandbox | Memory accesses use software bounds checks, adding overhead |
| PPC JIT SIMD | The dynamic JIT does not yet emit SIMD | Some workloads lose optimization available in native builds |
The project README records profiler observations of approximately 59.7 presentation frames per second, 12.8 unique visual frames per second and 78.3% stale-source reuse across three software-rasterizer runs. These are internal engineering measurements; the page does not specify a publication year or independent test protocol. They should not be treated as a benchmark for a particular Wii title, computer or browser.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Why performance varies so much
Several layers compete for time: PowerPC translation, software memory checks, rasterization, EFB/XFB handling, JavaScript coordination, audio buffering and the browser’s worker scheduler. The browser sandbox prevents the native fast-memory trap approach, and the current JIT’s lack of SIMD removes another optimization. A modern desktop can therefore run one title acceptably while another suffers from low unique-frame rates, audio glitches or long pauses.
Presentation FPS can also overstate playability. Reusing an unchanged framebuffer may keep the display’s presentation rate high while the game produces fewer new visual frames. Evaluate a title by its control response, motion smoothness, audio timing and correctness, not by one counter.
Input, audio and save-state boundaries
Keyboard events and standard browser gamepads are the supported control mechanisms. A wired controller is often the simplest option because it avoids Bluetooth pairing and browser permission problems, but the software still sees it through the standard Gamepad API. Button mapping is title-dependent, and a controller recognized by the operating system is not necessarily exposed until the page has focus or a button is pressed.
JavaScript maintains the audio buffer, so browser tab throttling, device changes and an overloaded CPU can cause crackling or delayed sound. Keep the tab active while testing and use a stable output device. Save states are handled by the browser-side host; they are separate from the original Wii’s storage behavior and should be treated as emulator data that can become invalid after changing builds.

Troubleshooting common failures
The page works over localhost but not on a deployed domain
Inspect the response headers and confirm both COOP and COEP are present on the document and worker responses. Check crossOriginIsolated. A third-party asset blocked by require-corp can break initialization; add an appropriate resource policy or serve the asset from the same origin.

The worker never starts
Look for a worker script blocked by CORS, COEP or an incorrect MIME type. Serve WebAssembly with a normal web-server response rather than a filesystem URL, and verify that the worker’s imported scripts carry compatible headers.
WebGPU initialization fails
Update the desktop browser and graphics driver, confirm WebGPU is enabled for that browser/device, and try the documented software path with a WebGL or Canvas fallback. A fallback can make the page draw without delivering the same performance.
The game boots but is too slow
Test another title, close CPU-heavy tabs, use the software path before the experimental hardware renderer, and compare a native Dolphin installation if you need a baseline. Do not infer that a low frame rate is caused only by WebGL; CPU translation and software rasterization may dominate.

Click the emulator page, press a gamepad button so the browser exposes the device, then revisit the mapping screen. If the title depends on Wii Remote motion or pointing, the documented port lacks the required input implementation rather than a simple button assignment.
Licensing and distribution
Dolphin is licensed under GPLv2 or later. The wasm-dolphin project states that a distributed combined build containing vendored Dolphin sources or the built core must comply with GPLv2+. That obligation applies to the person or organization distributing the emulator build; it is distinct from your responsibility to obtain and use game images lawfully. The browser project does not bundle Wii discs, and you should provide dumps made from media you are entitled to use.
How to judge a browser Wii emulator
When comparing implementations, check the actual engineering choices instead of treating “runs in WebAssembly” as a performance guarantee:
- CPU translation: Is it an interpreter, a native-style dynamic JIT, or a JIT that emits WebAssembly?
- Graphics: Does it use a software rasterizer, a WebGL/OpenGL ES backend, an experimental WebGPU renderer, or a mixture?
- Threading: Does it use workers and SharedArrayBuffer, and are the required isolation headers configured?
- Input: Are keyboard and standard gamepads supported, or are Wii Remote and motion controls implemented too?
- Compatibility: Are claims based on a named title and a project report, or on repeatable independent testing?
- Distribution: Does the build respect Dolphin’s GPL terms and require users to supply their own legally dumped images?
WebAssembly supplies the CPU execution environment, and WebGL supplies a familiar browser graphics interface, but neither removes the hard parts of Wii emulation. In the documented design, WebGPU presentation, software rendering, worker-based execution and cross-origin isolation work together. The result is a useful technical demonstration and a way to boot some Wii software without installing a native application, while title compatibility, Wii Remote support and consistent full-speed play remain open limitations.
