Antivirus software should be judged on more than whether it detects a test file. A useful assessment separates protection, everyday performance, false alarms, and usability, then reports the product version, platform, settings, update and cloud-service state, and test period so readers can understand what the results do—and do not—show.
What a thorough antivirus test needs to measure
Protection, speed, and usability answer different questions. A product can score well on one and less well on another, so a single headline score is not a complete verdict.
- Protection: how the product handles threats encountered through realistic routes, such as web and email, as well as a set of recent, widespread malware.
- Performance: how much the product affects everyday tasks compared with an otherwise equivalent computer without security software.
- Usability: whether the product incorrectly warns about, blocks, or detects legitimate websites, applications, or activity.
- Scope and conditions: the operating system and architecture, product version, configuration, test dates, and whether updates and cloud services were available.
These dimensions should be reported separately. A performance result cannot stand in for a protection test, and a protection score from one platform or test cycle should not be generalized into a permanent guarantee.
How independent labs test protection
Real-world threats and recent malware
AV-TEST describes two distinct protection categories in its home-user Windows 11 testing: real-world 0-day threats involving web and email, and widespread malware discovered during the preceding four weeks. This tests more than a static scan of a fixed collection of files: the attack route and the product’s protection layers matter too.

For its May–June 2026 round, AV-TEST says it evaluated 16 home-user security products on Windows 11 using current publicly available versions and default settings. Products could update and query cloud services during the test, and the lab says it assessed the products’ full protection layers. Those conditions are part of what the result means; a disconnected or differently configured installation may behave differently.
AV-TEST scoring and its limits
In the June 2026 Windows 11 consumer results, AV-TEST scored protection, performance, and usability separately, awarding up to 6 points in each category and 18 points total. AV-TEST states that 10 points earns its seal of approval and 17.5 earns its TOP PRODUCT award. These are that lab’s thresholds, not universal definitions of a good antivirus or a ranking that can be directly compared with another lab’s scale.

For example, the June 2026 result for Microsoft Defender Antivirus Consumer 4.18 was specific to Windows 11 Professional, English, 64-bit, and that test period. It recorded full protection scores in both protection categories in that round; the result is not a guarantee for other versions, platforms, configurations, or future threats.
How labs measure everyday performance
AV-Comparatives defines performance as the speed at which a PC running a security product completes a task relative to an otherwise identical PC without security software. Its methodology measures common file operations and application activity with an active internet connection and consumer products at default settings. It runs measurements at least ten times and uses averages to reduce measurement error, repeating more when results fluctuate.

The lab cautions that relative comparisons among products are more useful than simply comparing the fastest product with an unprotected PC. Consumers should not choose solely on low performance impact: that result says nothing by itself about protection quality.

AV-Comparatives explicitly says its performance test does not test malware detection or protection. The lab also lists separate methodologies for protection, anti-phishing, and malware removal; results from those tests should be kept distinct rather than treated as interchangeable evidence.

Why false positives belong in the results
A product that blocks legitimate work can be frustrating or disruptive even when it detects threats well. AV-TEST’s usability category records false website warnings or blocks, false detections of legitimate software, and incorrect warnings or blocks during legitimate installation and use. In its June 2026 Windows 11 consumer results, usability is one of the three main scoring categories.
When comparing results, check whether the report measures these different kinds of false alarms, rather than relying on a vague “usability” label alone. A false website block and an incorrect detection of a legitimate application are different failure modes.

What hands-on editorial testing can add
Lab benchmarks offer controlled comparisons; hands-on review can add observations about installation, ordinary use, detection notifications, quarantine handling, and included features. In a guide updated 1 October 2026, TechRadar describes installing and using products on home devices, checking EICAR test files and internally created malware in a controlled environment, examining detection and quarantine, observing routine tasks such as opening a browser and navigating websites, inspecting additional features, and cross-checking findings against AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives. That is TechRadar’s stated procedure, not evidence that every publisher follows the same steps.
What EICAR can and cannot tell you
EICAR is a recognized test fixture, useful for checking whether a product responds to a known safe detection test. TechRadar says it supplements EICAR with internally created test files because vendors’ products recognize EICAR. EICAR recognition alone therefore should not be presented as proof that a product can detect new or previously unseen threats.
Testing potentially harmful samples requires a controlled environment. A report should describe what was tested and how the result was checked without implying that a simple test-file response establishes broad protection.
How to compare antivirus test results fairly
Before treating two results as a head-to-head comparison, check whether they address the same question and have comparable conditions.

- Match the platform and product. Note the operating system, architecture, product edition and version, and test period.
- Check configuration and connectivity. Look for default or custom settings, update availability, and whether cloud services and an internet connection were enabled.
- Read the false-alarm measures. Find out whether the result includes false website blocks, incorrect detections, and warnings during legitimate use.
- Keep each score in its own context. Lab scales, sample sets, and procedures differ. A score or award from one test cycle is evidence about that test—not a universal ranking or promise of future behavior.
The practical takeaway is to compare several dimensions and the conditions behind them. A strong protection result, a light performance impact, and few false alarms are useful evidence together; none should be inferred from a result that measured something else.
