The system combines live observations with detailed maps to locate the vehicle, interpret its surroundings, predict what other road users may do and plan a path. Vehicle controls then carry out that plan. Waymo says human Remote Assistance can provide context in some unusual or challenging situations; its published description does not say that agents routinely steer or drive the cars.
How does the Waymo Driver work?
Waymo describes its approach as “Sense, Solve, Go.” That is the company’s label for its own system, not a universal industry standard. The stages work together: sensors gather evidence, software interprets it and chooses a trajectory, and vehicle controls execute the resulting movements.

Sense: gather evidence from several sensors
Waymo’s Help page describes lidar, cameras and radar as complementary sources of information. Lidar sends out laser pulses and measures their reflections to estimate distance and build a three-dimensional view. Waymo says its lidar can measure objects around the vehicle in 360 degrees and at distances of up to 300 metres. That is a company-stated capability, not a guarantee of detection in every circumstance.
Cameras capture visual details that help the system interpret such things as traffic lights, signs, pedestrians and construction scenes. Radar contributes information about objects’ distance, speed and direction. Waymo describes radar as useful in rain, fog and snow; that should not be read as a claim that every sensor or the vehicle as a whole operates perfectly in all weather.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
The system combines these inputs rather than relying on one sensor to do everything. Waymo says its hardware also includes an AI compute platform and provides a 360-degree view around the vehicle. Sensor count and design depend on the vehicle generation, so specifications for one fleet vehicle should not be applied to another.
Solve: locate, interpret, predict and plan
Waymo says it creates detailed custom maps of a new operating area, including features such as lane markings, signs, curbs and crosswalks. The vehicle uses those maps alongside live sensor observations and AI to estimate its position. The maps provide context; they do not replace real-time sensing.
After locating itself, the system’s perception software identifies objects and road features. Its prediction software estimates plausible movements by other road users. Waymo says the system uses this information and the map to plan a trajectory, including decisions about speed, lane and steering. This is the company’s high-level description; it does not disclose the full proprietary algorithms behind those decisions.

Go: carry out the planned movement
Once the software selects a path, Waymo says its motion-control system manages actions such as acceleration and braking. The company also describes backup computing and redundant steering, braking, power and positioning systems. These are intended to support a safe stop or continued operation after certain failures, rather than to imply that every possible failure can be overcome.
What sensors and vehicle generations does Waymo use?
There is no single sensor specification that describes every Waymo robotaxi. Waymo’s public materials name Jaguar I-PACE vehicles and Ojai in its fleet, while its February 2026 announcement describes a sixth-generation system and a rollout stage. The figures below come from different descriptions and are not an independent, apples-to-apples comparison.
| System or vehicle context | What Waymo’s materials state | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Jaguar I-PACE vehicles | Waymo’s technology page states that these vehicles have 29 cameras. | This is a specification for the I-PACE system described on that page; it should not be transferred to other generations. |
| Sixth-generation system | Waymo’s February 2026 announcement describes a 17-megapixel camera imager, imaging radar, lidar redundancy, sensor cleaning and external audio receivers designed to detect emergency-vehicle sirens and railroad crossings. A camera count is not stated in that announcement. | The announcement describes a different sensor suite and a rollout beginning with Ojai. It does not establish that every current ride uses the sixth-generation system. |
Waymo’s FAQ names the Jaguar I-PACE and Ojai in its fleet information. Vehicle availability and configuration can change, and a feature announced for one generation or operating stage should not be assumed for every vehicle, city or software release.

Are Waymo cars actually self-driving?
Waymo describes the Waymo Driver as its autonomous driving system and says it operates fully autonomously in its service. “Self-driving” here does not mean that the car is independent of maps, onboard software, support processes or operating limits. Waymo’s own description combines detailed maps with current sensor data and software that locates, perceives, predicts and plans.

Capability also depends on the vehicle generation and the specific operating area and service stage. In February 2026, Waymo said it was beginning fully autonomous operations with the sixth-generation system on Ojai while initially offering employee and guest trips as it refined the rider experience. That announcement is evidence of a rollout stage, not proof that all public rides use that generation.
Waymo says its preparation includes closed-course scenarios, public-road driving, simulation, crash-avoidance tests, hazard analysis, and reliability and durability testing. Its technology page reports more than 40,000 unique closed-course scenarios and over 20 billion simulated miles. These are figures published by Waymo, not independently audited counts in the cited materials.

Does a human remotely drive a Waymo?
Waymo says Remote Assistance lets the Waymo Driver contact a human agent for additional information that can help contextualize the vehicle’s surroundings in challenging or uncommon situations. The company says the program has been part of the system’s design from the beginning and reports that it has been independently audited against industry best practices.
In Waymo’s published account, the human role is to provide information, not to take over routine driving. The cited description does not establish that an agent remotely steers the vehicle. Waymo presents occasional assistance as compatible with its autonomous operation; that is the company’s account of its program and its reference to an independent audit.
What do Waymo’s safety figures show?
In an update dated June 24, 2026, Waymo said its analysis covered more than 220 million fully autonomous miles through March 31, 2026, across five operating geographies, including Atlanta for the first time. Comparing Waymo vehicles with human drivers in the same areas over the same period, the company reported the following reductions. It says the comparisons include collisions regardless of fault.
Best Value
| Outcome in Waymo’s comparison | Company-reported difference |
|---|---|
| Crashes causing serious or fatal injuries | 94% fewer |
| Crashes involving airbag deployment | 82% fewer |
| Crashes involving any reported injury | 82% fewer |
| Injury-causing crashes involving pedestrians | 93% fewer |
| Injury-causing crashes involving cyclists | 84% fewer |
| Injury-causing crashes involving motorcyclists | 84% fewer |
For Atlanta specifically, Waymo reported more than 5.4 million fully autonomous miles and compared them with its human-driver benchmark. It reported 94% fewer crashes involving airbag deployment and 86% fewer crashes involving injury, and said both Atlanta comparisons were statistically significant.
These are Waymo’s reported comparisons, not a guarantee that an individual trip is risk-free or proof that the system alone caused every difference. The date, geography, comparison group and outcome definition matter: the percentages describe the company’s analysis of matched operating areas and time periods, not every road or every driver.
Carol Flannagan, a research professor at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, commented on Waymo’s published analysis: “The consistency of the results across locations helps support the strength of the conclusions, and their methods give significant attention to the challenges of making apples-to-apples comparisons when the data sources for humans and the Waymo vehicle are different.” That observation recognizes the value of the comparison while also underscoring that the data sources differ.

What should riders know about cameras and audio?
Waymo says interior cameras may be used for purposes including cleanliness, lost items, emergencies, rider-rule compliance, service improvement and safety. It says support staff may review video in certain circumstances and may access live video during some urgent situations.
According to Waymo’s Help page, microphones inside the vehicle are on during calls with Rider Support or when riders choose to enable them. The company describes exterior audio detection as a way to identify sirens and other relevant sounds, with technical and procedural safeguards intended to limit collection of human voice data.
