If you find an old Bitcoin wallet, first work out what you still have: a recovery phrase, wallet file, encrypted backup, old device, private-key export, or only a public address. A missing device may be replaceable from a valid backup. But if the private keys and every usable backup are gone, the bitcoin cannot be spent: there is no central authority that can recreate them.
Keep any files and devices safe, and do not share passwords, seed phrases, or private keys with anyone. The right recovery route depends on the wallet software and age, not just on whether the file looks familiar.

What “lost the keys” means
A Bitcoin wallet manages the keys that authorize transactions; bitcoin itself is recorded on the blockchain. A public address can show whether funds were received, but it cannot authorize spending. Bitcoin.org explains that no one—not developers, miners, wallet providers, or exchanges—can recover funds permanently lost from a self-custodied wallet: Bitcoin.org: Some things you need to know.
That makes it important to distinguish a lost device from lost spend authority. If a valid backup or recovery phrase survives, you may be able to restore access on another device. If the keys and all usable backups are permanently gone, the funds remain on the public ledger but cannot be moved.

Start by identifying what you found
Do not assume an old wallet used a modern recovery phrase. Older wallets could keep separate, unrelated keys; a backup made earlier might not include keys generated afterward. Bitcoin Core distinguishes wallets created before and after version 0.13: older non-HD wallets could require more frequent backups, while HD wallets derive addresses from a seed. For an old Android bitcoin-wallet backup, the project’s recovery guide describes looking for files beginning bitcoin-wallet-backup in cloud storage, email, or an SD-card download folder. Treat that as a wallet-specific procedure, not a reason to upload a backup to a recovery service.

Take these steps before trying to restore anything
- Keep secrets private. Never send a seed phrase, private key, wallet file, or password to a stranger, support account, public forum, or diagnostic form. Do not enter a phrase on a site reached through an unsolicited message or QR code.
- Preserve the original. Make a protected copy of a wallet file or backup before attempting to open, repair, convert, or restore it. Leave the original unchanged. Bitcoin Core’s documentation advises keeping reliable backups offline and away from malware.
- Record the context. Note the app or wallet name, device, approximate year, file name and extension, and any accompanying instructions. A recovery phrase, encrypted file, and exported private key are different artifacts; one restoration method will not necessarily work for another.
- Use instructions for the identified wallet. Start with its official documentation and match the instructions to the wallet’s version and format. Do not put an unknown phrase into a random wallet app: HD wallet compatibility and derivation settings can differ, as the Bitcoin Developer Guide explains.
- Check carefully before spending. Confirm the destination address in full before sending bitcoin. Transactions are irreversible; never pay an unknown person an “unlock” or guaranteed-recovery fee.
What to expect from each recovery route
If you still have a recovery phrase
A valid phrase may restore a deterministic wallet, but it is not guaranteed to work in every wallet application. Compatibility, derivation settings, and an additional passphrase, if one was used, can affect which addresses appear. Follow the instructions for the wallet you identify, and keep the phrase offline and private. Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance explains recovery phrases and backup considerations.

If you have a Bitcoin Core wallet file
Keep a copy before attempting restoration and consult the current Bitcoin Core documentation for the matching version and method. Bitcoin Core documents restoration through its GUI and RPC. The wallet’s age matters: a stale backup from a pre-0.13 non-HD wallet may omit keys generated after that backup, so it may not show every address that later received funds.

If the wallet or backup is encrypted
You will generally need the wallet’s encryption password to use encrypted key material. Bitcoin.org notes that password-recovery options are very limited; encryption passwords should not be confused with seed phrases. The Android bitcoin-wallet project’s recovery instructions cover only its own historical formats and depend on the needed password. Do not upload an encrypted wallet file or decrypted keys to a third party.
If all you have is an address
You can use the address to check public transaction history, but that does not reveal the private key. If no key, phrase, device backup, or other usable wallet backup exists, the address alone cannot restore spending access.

Recognize recovery scams
Bitcoin.org states: “No legitimate support representative will ever ask for your seed phrase or private key.” Its scam guidance warns that fraudsters impersonate wallet or exchange support, seek remote access to devices, or demand upfront fees while promising recovery. A guaranteed-recovery claim is not proof that a service can access your wallet.

- Do not share secrets in a support ticket, direct message, remote-control session, or website form.
- Do not let a stranger operate your computer or phone to “recover” a wallet.
- Assume a computer connected to the internet or infected with malware could expose decrypted keys.
- If considering a hardware wallet for future custody after regaining access, obtain it from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller and generate its seed yourself. A new device cannot reconstruct keys that are already lost.
