Start with the exact device and the seller—not the discount badge. Confirm the model, configuration and condition; check who is responsible for returns and warranty service; then compare the total delivered price with the same device in the same condition. For a used or refurbished unit, Apple’s coverage lookup can help, but it does not by itself authenticate the seller or prove every claim in the listing.
1. Confirm you are comparing the same iPad or MacBook
Listings can use similar product names while offering different generations or configurations. Before judging the price, record the exact model and check the details that affect what you receive:

- Generation and chip
- Screen size
- Memory and storage
- Wi‑Fi or cellular connectivity for an iPad
- Condition: new, open-box, used or refurbished
- Included accessories and, for a MacBook, keyboard layout or other regional differences
A lower price may be fair for an older generation, smaller storage capacity, different connectivity, or a device that is not new. Save a screenshot of the listing with its model, condition, seller, price, shipping and promised accessories so you can compare the offer accurately.

Identify the actual seller, especially on a marketplace where the platform and the seller may be different businesses. Look for a verifiable business name and contact details, and check the payment route and written terms before paying. Read the return and warranty terms rather than relying on a badge or a promise in a message. Establish the return window, any conditions or fees, who handles a warranty claim, how long coverage lasts, and where service is available. The warranty may be provided by Apple, the retailer or a third-party refurbisher; those are not interchangeable protections.
3. Treat refurbished labels precisely
“Refurbished” does not automatically mean Apple Certified Refurbished. Apple says it is the exclusive provider of Apple Certified Refurbished products. Its U.S. Education store page describes a process that includes full functionality testing, replacement of defective modules, cleaning and inspection, plus a standard one-year limited warranty: Apple Online Exclusives — Shopping Help — Education.

A third-party refurbished device may still be a suitable purchase, but assess that seller’s disclosed inspection process, warranty provider and return terms on their own. The same Apple page says refurbished products from the U.S. Education store can be returned by request within 14 calendar days after receipt. That is a policy example for that regional storefront, not a general return rule for other Apple stores, retailers or countries.

For a used or refurbished device, ask for its model and serial number and enter the serial on Apple’s View Coverage page. The page lets you view coverage information for a device. Compare the result with the seller’s description, but do not treat a lookup alone as proof that the seller is legitimate or that the physical device is the one represented.

When possible, match the serial and identifying details to the actual device. For an in-person purchase, inspect the unit before paying; do not rely only on a box, a screenshot supplied by the seller or a serial number typed into a message. If the seller will not provide enough information to verify what is being offered, pause the purchase.
5. Get a detailed receipt and keep the records
Ask for a receipt or invoice that identifies the device and records the purchase date, receipt or invoice number, price and reseller contact information. Apple notes that a serial number should appear on the receipt if that reseller normally includes serial numbers on receipts. Keep the receipt with the saved listing and written warranty and return terms in case you need to resolve a dispute or make a claim.

6. Compare the real total and trade-offs
Compare the offer with current prices in your country for the identical model, configuration and condition from Apple and reputable sellers. Use the delivered total, including shipping and any other stated charges, rather than a percentage-off label or an old launch price. Put competing offers side by side:
Recommended Free Tools
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Device | Exact model, generation, chip, size, memory, storage and connectivity |
| Condition | New, open-box, used or refurbished; for refurbished, the disclosed inspection process |
| Total cost | Price delivered to you, including stated shipping and charges |
| Seller and returns | Seller identity, contact details, return window and conditions |
| Warranty | Provider, duration and route for service |
| Documentation | Serial or coverage information where applicable, and a detailed receipt |
| What is included | Accessories and relevant regional or keyboard differences |
The better offer depends on what matters most to you: the lowest total cost, stronger return protection, or a documented refurbishment and warranty path. A deal is worth considering only when the device, seller, condition and protections are clear enough to weigh against the price.
