The company describes these systems as ways to make recommendations, predict needs, improve inventory visibility and support decisions. Those descriptions explain intended uses; they do not, on their own, prove independently measured improvements in cost, product availability or customer satisfaction.
How Walmart’s data use fits together
Walmart’s approach is not a single “big data” system. It connects information to different actions depending on who needs to use it:

- For shoppers: use data and AI to tailor digital content and help with support tasks.
- For retail operations: use predictions, inventory information and coordination tools to inform decisions across stores, warehouses and transportation.
- For suppliers: package retail insights as analytics services that can help brands understand performance and identify possible actions.
In each case, data becomes useful when it informs a recommendation, prediction, operational decision or business action. The systems have different purposes and rollouts, so their outcomes should not be treated as directly comparable.
How Walmart uses data to personalize shopping and support
Walmart says it uses AI to tailor parts of the Walmart.com experience. In an October 2024 announcement, it described a Content Decision Platform that uses AI-based technology to understand a customer and a generative AI tool to predict relevant content. Walmart said the platform was then in use in selected areas of Walmart.com, with the goal of making each shopper’s homepage more personalized. This describes an announced capability and rollout, not a controlled assessment of whether personalization improves shopping outcomes. Walmart’s 2024 announcement

The same announcement introduced Wallaby, a family of retail-specific language models that Walmart said was trained with decades of its data to generate responses suited to the Walmart environment. Walmart also described a personalized Customer Support Assistant that can recognize a customer, locate orders and manage returns. These examples show how data and AI can be applied to both what shoppers see and the support tasks they can complete; the announcement does not independently verify their effect on customer satisfaction or service quality.
How data supports stores and the supply chain
Walmart’s July 2025 account describes data and AI systems used to coordinate work across the supply chain, stores and fulfillment. Examples vary by task and geography:

- Language: english
- Book - storytelling with data: a data visualization guide for business professionals
- Prediction and preparation: Walmart described predictive AI for produce sorting in Costa Rica and order pre-assembly in Canada.
- Inventory movement: In Mexico, Walmart described inventory rerouting. Its Self-Healing Inventory system is intended to redirect products when stock imbalances arise.
- Visibility: Walmart’s Enterprise Inventory system is described as providing a unified view of inventory across stores, fulfillment centers and online channels.
- Warehouse and transport coordination: Proactive and predictive management systems coordinate fulfillment and help optimize routes for fresh deliveries. An orchestration layer monitors warehouse automation.
- Associate decisions: Walmart describes AI tools for associates that answer operational questions and suggest next steps.
These examples illustrate different data-to-action paths: predicting what may be needed, making inventory visible, redirecting products, coordinating automated work or advising an associate. Walmart presents them as live or rolling-out capabilities, not as independently quantified proof of savings, reduced waste or improved availability. The company’s chief technology officer for Walmart International, Vinod Bidarkoppa, summarized the approach in the article: “At this scale, the only way to move faster is to move smarter.” Walmart’s supply-chain account
How Walmart turns retail data into supplier analytics
Walmart also treats retail data as a service for businesses that supply its stores. Walmart says it established Walmart Data Ventures in 2021 to develop business applications of its first-party data. Its Walmart Luminate analytics suite was announced for global launch in Canada and Mexico in May 2024. Walmart Luminate announcement

In September 2026, Walmart described Scintilla as evolving into a commerce-intelligence platform for suppliers. Walmart says its AI-powered capabilities are intended to help users understand performance, spot opportunities and act on inventory, media and in-store needs. That positions Scintilla as a step beyond simply viewing analytics: the stated aim is to connect insight with business action. These are Walmart’s descriptions of the service, not independent evidence that a particular supplier will achieve a particular result. Walmart’s Scintilla announcement
What the evidence does—and does not—show
Walmart’s public descriptions establish intended functions and give examples of where systems are being used. They do not establish independently verified causal improvements in cost, product availability, waste or customer satisfaction. That distinction matters: an announced prediction or inventory tool is evidence of a capability, not by itself evidence of the size or cause of a business result.

Walmart’s 2025 Retail Rewired report offers survey findings about consumer views of AI and data, rather than a test of Walmart’s own systems. It reports that 27% of respondents preferred AI suggestions to influencer suggestions (24%) when making shopping decisions, while 49% were unsure. The same report says 27% wanted clear transparency about data use and third-party involvement, 26% wanted control over shared data through clear privacy settings, and 25% wanted minimal collection that avoids storing sensitive personal information. These are company-reported survey results, not measurements of recommendation-system effectiveness or proof of what all shoppers want. Walmart Retail Rewired Report 2025

Privacy, governance and AI risks
Using customer and operational data at this scale raises questions about privacy, cybersecurity and how automated systems are governed. In its FY2025 ESG reporting, Walmart says the board’s Audit Committee oversees information systems, information security, data privacy and cybersecurity. The company also describes management expertise in privacy, ethical AI and information management, along with policies for AI, machine learning and automated decision systems. Walmart frames its technology and data practices around service, excellence, integrity and respect; these are the company’s stated commitments and oversight structures. Walmart FY2025 ESG Report

Walmart’s 2025 annual report says it continues investing in AI and generative AI for customer and associate experience and operational efficiency, while warning that implementation can bring operational and legal complexity, privacy risks and compliance issues. The caveat is important: expanding data-driven systems is not just a technical challenge, but also a governance and risk-management responsibility. Walmart 2025 Annual Report
Why Walmart uses big data
Walmart’s model connects data to decisions at several levels: tailoring digital interactions for shoppers, coordinating inventory and fulfillment for operations, and offering suppliers analytics about retail performance. The company’s announcements clarify what these systems are designed to do and where it says they are deployed. Claims about business impact should be judged separately, because the public descriptions and survey figures cited here do not independently establish causal performance gains.
