If the menu or the TV’s built-in picture test shows the same problem, review the picture and energy-saving settings; if the fault persists, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service. A dim picture alone does not prove that the LED backlight has failed.
First, find out whether the problem is the TV or one source
Open the TV’s settings menu or press the volume button while the picture looks faded. Compare the menu with the program or device image.

- The menu looks normal, but one connected device looks dim or flickers: Start with that device, its output settings, and the connection.
- The menu is also dim, flickering, or unstable: The cause is more likely to involve the TV’s settings or an internal fault. Continue with the checks below.
LG describes this menu check for flickering and blank screens; it is a useful way to isolate a fading picture, but it does not by itself identify a failed component. LG’s external-device and cable guidance explains the distinction.

On the TV, look for controls with names such as Backlight, Light Sensor, Ambient Sensor, Eco Mode, Power Saving, or automatic brightness. Labels and availability vary by model and region, so use the manual or support page for your exact model rather than relying on a universal menu path.

- Backlight: On many LED-backlit LCD TVs, this controls the screen’s illumination and is separate from the ordinary picture Brightness control. Sony’s LCD guidance identifies Backlight as a setting to check. Sony Asia’s picture-setting guidance covers the relevant controls.
- Ambient or light sensor: A sensor may alter the picture according to room lighting. Panasonic advises checking Ambient Sensor when a picture looks dark or dull. Panasonic’s picture-troubleshooting guidance describes this check.
- Eco or power-saving settings: These can reduce brightness to save power or respond to room conditions. Samsung explains how its Eco Solution settings can affect brightness. Samsung’s brightness guidance describes those options.
Change one setting at a time, observe the result, and note the original value so you can restore it. If the screen brightens after disabling an automatic or energy-saving feature, that points to a setting rather than proving any hardware is defective.
Compare inputs and check the connection
Try a built-in TV app, another input, or another known-good source. If the issue is limited to one HDMI device, reconnect both ends of its cable securely and restart the source. If possible, borrow a compatible, known-good cable to test; buying a cable is not a useful first step when the TV’s own menu and every source are dim.

Samsung provides a cable test on some models; if that test reports a problem, the cable may need replacement. Availability and instructions depend on the TV. Samsung’s HDMI cable-test instructions explain the feature.
If the picture comes from an antenna or broadcast rather than an HDMI device, a weak or unstable signal can cause reception problems, but it is not a screen-brightness test. LG USA’s support article, dated September 10, 2026, says signal strength below 50% or signal quality fluctuating by more than 30% may indicate a weak broadcast signal. Those are LG’s signal-check thresholds, not a universal standard or evidence of a failing backlight. LG’s broadcast-signal guidance explains the check.

Run the TV’s built-in picture test
If the menu itself looks wrong, use the TV’s picture test if your model offers one. Samsung documents different Picture Test menu routes for 2022-and-later and earlier TVs, so follow the instructions for your model rather than assuming the same path applies to every set. Samsung’s Picture Test instructions describe the diagnostic.
If the problem appears in the built-in test, Samsung advises requesting service. Have the model code, software version, and serial number available when you contact support.

When to arrange service
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service if the TV’s menu or picture test remains dim or unstable after you have checked the settings, or if the dark picture affects built-in apps and multiple inputs. Panasonic likewise advises contacting support if a dark or dull picture does not improve after the suggested checks.
Do not open the TV, probe internal power components, bypass protection circuits, or buy a generic LED strip based only on a dim picture. The cause and compatible parts cannot be established without the exact make, model, and a proper diagnosis. Keep troubleshooting to normal menus, external devices, cables, and built-in tests.
