Most volatility ETFs do not own the spot VIX Index. They hold, or track indexes that hold, VIX futures. When those futures are in contango—later expirations priced above nearer expirations—the fund repeatedly sells a cheaper contract and buys a more expensive one. That negative roll yield can pull the fund down even when the quoted VIX is unchanged.
This is a structural headwind, not a guaranteed annual decay rate. A volatility shock can overwhelm roll losses, while backwardation can produce positive roll yield. To understand a fund’s result, separate the spot VIX, futures-price changes, roll yield, leverage, fees and the fund’s daily-reset rules.

What the VIX measures—and what a volatility ETF actually holds
The VIX is an option-derived benchmark of the S&P 500’s expected 30-day volatility. It is calculated from S&P 500 option quotes, not from a portfolio of shares that an ETF can simply buy and hold. The spot VIX is therefore an index reading rather than a conventional security with a deliverable share price.

VIX futures are separate contracts. Cboe describes them as reflecting “the market’s estimate of the value of the VIX Index on various expiration dates in the future.” A January future can be above or below the current VIX because it represents an expectation for January, not today’s option-implied volatility. Cboe introduced VIX futures on the Cboe Futures Exchange in 2004.

A volatility ETF or exchange-traded note (ETN) normally references an index that owns or rolls a basket of these futures. The index may target very short maturities, a longer average maturity, or a leveraged or inverse daily return. The fund’s market price also reflects expenses, trading frictions and the structure of the vehicle. Its ticker is not a promise that it tracks the spot VIX one-for-one.
How a futures roll creates a loss in contango
The curve determines the roll yield
“Contango” means a deferred VIX future costs more than a nearer contract. Suppose an index holds a near-month future at 20 and must maintain its maturity exposure by moving into a later future priced at 22. It sells the 20 contract and buys the 22 contract. Before either contract changes because of market volatility, the index has paid a two-point premium to keep similar exposure.
That price gap is negative roll yield, commonly called roll cost. The example is deliberately simplified: real indexes use specified weights, a maturity target and scheduled trading rules, so a single roll’s percentage cannot be applied directly to every fund. It illustrates why a flat spot VIX does not make the roll free.

Futures expire. A short-term index must sell contracts approaching expiration and replace them with later contracts, often every day or over a defined schedule. If contango persists, each replacement requires buying higher on the curve than the contract being sold. The losses accumulate in the index level even if the spot VIX keeps returning to the same value.

Roll yield is only one component of a futures index’s return. The contracts can rise or fall as expectations change, and the curve can steepen, flatten or invert between roll dates. Trading costs and the exact timing of the roll also affect the realized result. This is why no single “annual decay” percentage applies to all volatility funds.
A numerical illustration
| Item | Illustrative value | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Near-month VIX future | 20 | The contract being sold |
| Deferred VIX future | 22 | The contract being purchased |
| Contango gap | 2 points | The premium paid to maintain exposure, before other price moves |
| Spot VIX during the roll | Unchanged in this illustration | Why the fund can fall while the headline VIX is flat |
If the deferred contract later falls toward the expiring contract’s level without a volatility shock, the index absorbs that convergence as a futures loss. If a sudden equity sell-off pushes futures sharply higher, that gain can more than offset the prior roll cost. The order and path of those moves matter.
What happens in backwardation
Backwardation is the opposite curve shape: the nearer VIX future is more expensive than the deferred future. A long futures index can then sell the near contract and buy a cheaper later contract. That creates positive roll yield, all else equal.
Backwardation does not guarantee a profit. Futures prices can fall, the curve can reverse before the next roll, and fees and trading costs still apply. The sign and size of roll yield depend on the curve, the index’s maturity target and the path of futures prices. Backwardation simply removes the contango headwind and can become a tailwind for a long position.

Why a volatility ETF can diverge from the VIX
Comparing an ETF chart with the spot VIX without checking the futures curve is a common source of confusion. These are different exposures:
| Market condition | Spot VIX | VIX futures and roll | Possible long-futures ETF result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spot VIX flat, persistent contango | Little change | Repeated negative roll yield | Decline over time |
| Spot VIX rises suddenly | Large increase | Near futures may jump; curve may invert | Short-term gain can be substantial |
| Spot VIX falls after a spike | Sharp retreat | Futures may also fall, sometimes from elevated levels | Gains can disappear quickly |
| Spot VIX flat, backwardation | Little change | Potentially positive roll yield | Roll can add to returns |
| Spot VIX rises, deferred futures lag | Increase concentrated in current volatility | Futures gain less than the spot index | ETF gain may be much smaller than the VIX move |
The spot index can rise because near-term option prices jump while longer-dated futures move less. A fund holding those longer contracts will not reproduce the spot percentage change. Conversely, a fund can lose value while the spot VIX is stable because its futures are declining toward a lower expected level and its rolls occur in contango.

Short-term versus mid-term futures
Short-term indexes keep exposure close to the front of the futures curve. The CFA Institute Research Foundation’s 2015 ETF guide notes that these strategies have a much larger roll-yield component than longer-maturity strategies. They can react more quickly to a volatility shock, but they are also more exposed to the steep part of a contango curve.

A longer maturity target may respond more slowly when near-term volatility surges.

Long versus inverse exposure
A long index seeks positive exposure to VIX-futures returns. Contango is normally a headwind for that position. An inverse index seeks the opposite daily return, so the same contango that hurts a long strategy can help an inverse strategy before fees and tracking effects. Inverse products can lose rapidly when futures jump, and their daily reset makes multi-day results path-dependent.
Leveraged daily-reset products
Leveraged funds reset their target each trading day. If the underlying futures index moves up and down, compounding can produce a result different from simply multiplying the index’s total return by the stated leverage. A large one-day gain followed by a large loss, or the reverse, can erode value even when the underlying ends near its starting level. Contango, leverage and daily compounding are separate effects that can reinforce one another.
ETF, ETN, expenses and financing
An ETF holds a portfolio or uses an exposure arrangement backed by assets; an ETN is a debt security whose return depends on the issuer’s promise and the referenced index. The legal, credit and tax details differ, so read the current prospectus for the exact vehicle. A ticker such as VXX has used an ETN structure, while UVXY has used a leveraged ETF structure; their names do not make either one a spot-VIX investment.
Expense ratios, futures commissions, bid-ask spreads, financing, collateral returns and index implementation can all widen the gap between a fund and its stated benchmark. The difference between the fund’s net asset value and its exchange price can add another source of tracking difference. These costs are ongoing and are separate from roll yield.

How to diagnose a fund that is falling while the VIX is flat
- Identify the actual benchmark. Read the fund’s current prospectus and fact sheet. Record whether it references short-term or mid-term futures, long or inverse exposure, leverage and a daily reset.
- List the contracts and maturity target. Determine which futures months the benchmark holds and how it maintains its target maturity. A front-month strategy and a six-month strategy can experience very different curves.
- Look at the futures curve, not only the spot index. Compare the prices of near and deferred VIX contracts on the dates the index rolls. Higher deferred prices indicate contango; lower deferred prices indicate backwardation.
- Separate market movement from roll yield. A futures contract can lose value because expectations changed, because it converged toward expiration, or because the index bought a more expensive replacement. Attribute each component before judging performance.
- Subtract implementation costs. Check the stated expense ratio and consider spreads, commissions, financing and any collateral or tracking difference described by the issuer.
- Match the measurement period to the product. For a daily-reset leveraged or inverse fund, compare daily returns first. A multi-month chart can reflect compounding and curve effects that are invisible in a one-day comparison.
Holding-period risks and realistic expectations
Long volatility-futures products are generally designed for tactical exposure around a volatility event, not as a simple long-term substitute for the VIX. That is a use-case observation, not a holding-period guarantee: the appropriate period depends on the fund’s mandate, the investor’s objective and the current curve.
There is no universal decay rate. The SEC has warned that long VIX-futures exposure is likely to decline in contango unless volatility increases sharply. The amount of decline depends on the curve’s slope, how long contango lasts, the maturity target, futures-price movements, leverage, fees and trading costs. A calm market can therefore produce a persistent drag, while a short volatility shock can create a large gain that later reverses.
Losses from prior rolls do not automatically recover when the spot VIX returns to an earlier level. Recovery requires the futures held by the fund to generate enough gains to offset the lower index level, and that depends on the subsequent curve and price path.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating the VIX as directly tradable. The spot index is a benchmark; a fund normally obtains exposure through futures or a referenced index.
- Assuming a flat VIX means a flat fund. Contango can lower the futures index through repeated negative roll yield.
- Applying one decay percentage to every product. Short-term, mid-term, inverse and leveraged designs have different return mechanics.
- Ignoring the daily reset. Leveraged and inverse funds compound daily returns and can diverge materially over several sessions.
- Confusing an ETF with an ETN. The structure changes the legal exposure, issuer risk and the way the instrument tracks its benchmark.
- Looking only at a one-day headline move. A spot-VIX jump may not be matched by deferred futures, while a curve shift can matter more than the spot reading.
- Assuming backwardation guarantees profits. Positive roll yield can be overwhelmed by falling futures prices, fees or a reversal in the curve.
A practical framework for deciding whether the decline is structural
Ask three questions in order. First, did the fund’s futures contracts fall because volatility expectations changed? Second, was the replacement contract more expensive than the one sold, creating negative roll yield? Third, how much did fees, financing, leverage and tracking difference contribute?
If the answer to the second question is repeatedly “yes,” contango is the main structural explanation for the erosion. If the curve is in backwardation, investigate futures-price losses or product-specific costs instead. This framework keeps the spot VIX, the futures curve and the fund wrapper in their proper places.
Bottom line for investors
Volatility ETFs lose value over time through futures roll costs when they maintain long exposure in a contangoed VIX-futures curve. They sell expiring contracts at lower prices and buy later contracts at higher prices, creating negative roll yield that can accumulate while the spot VIX is unchanged. Backwardation can make the roll positive, and a sharp volatility increase can overwhelm either effect.
Before interpreting a chart, identify the benchmark’s maturity, direction, leverage and reset rule; inspect the futures curve; then account for expenses and tracking differences. That analysis explains why a fund such as a short-term long-volatility product can decline in a quiet market and why no fixed annual-loss figure applies to every volatility ETF.
