Video game companies make money through a mix of upfront game sales, recurring subscriptions, in-game purchases, advertising, and licensing. Premium sales create a concentrated payment at launch, while live services and free-to-play games can earn repeatedly from the same player. The best business mix depends on platform, player engagement, content cadence, and how revenue is recognized in financial statements.
The five main ways game companies earn revenue
Most publishers combine several revenue streams rather than relying on one checkout. A single title may launch as a paid game, add downloadable content (DLC), sell cosmetic items or a battle pass, carry advertising on mobile, and appear in a subscription library. Platform owners and publishers can also license games or content to third parties.

| Model | What the player pays for | Payment pattern | What drives results |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium full-game sales | Ownership or a license to play a complete game, delivered digitally or on physical media | Usually an upfront transaction around launch, with later sales over the product’s life | Launch conversion, franchise strength, pricing, reviews, and distribution |
| Subscriptions | Time-limited access to a game library, online services, extra content, or other benefits | Recurring monthly or annual fees; revenue is recognized over the coverage period | Subscriber growth, retention, usage, and the cost of keeping the catalog and service running |
| In-game purchases and recurrent consumer spending | Virtual currency, cosmetic or functional items, expansions, battle passes, and other add-on content | Repeated transactions during ongoing play | Engagement, content updates, conversion of players into payers, and payer spending |
| Advertising | Advertiser access to impressions or interactions inside a game | Payments tied to ad delivery and demand | Audience size, engagement, geography, ad load, and advertising rates |
| Licensing and platform distribution | Rights for another company to distribute, host, or use a game or related content | Contract-based fees or service revenue | Negotiated terms, reach of the licensed content, and platform usage |
These categories overlap. Take-Two, for example, defines recurrent consumer spending (RCS) to include virtual currency, add-on content, in-game purchases, and in-game advertising. That accounting bucket is broader than “microtransactions” alone.

A premium game generates a transaction when a customer buys access to the complete software package. The sale can be a digital download through a platform store or a packaged copy sold through retailers. Digital distribution is becoming the dominant route: Electronic Arts (EA) reported $1.478 billion in digital full-game downloads and $524 million in packaged-goods sales for fiscal 2025, and estimated that 78% of units sold were digital.

Why digital delivery changes the economics
EA says players increasingly purchase games digitally instead of physical discs. Digital selling generally avoids many traditional retail and distribution costs, and a publisher can keep a product available without manufacturing another batch of discs. The trade-off is that the company remains dependent on platform storefronts, digital merchandising, and the timing of a launch campaign.
Launch concentration and hit risk
Premium launches create concentrated demand. A publisher must forecast production, marketing, server capacity, and inventory before it knows how many people will buy. Revenue can be uneven when a major release slips or underperforms. EA warns that sales are concentrated among popular franchises, including EA SPORTS FC, Madden NFL, Apex Legends, and The Sims. A portfolio with a few large hits can produce strong years, but it also exposes the company to release schedules and franchise fatigue.
What happens after launch
Full-game sales do not necessarily end on release day. Publishers may sell the game later on additional platforms, discount it, bundle it, or include it in a subscription catalog. Those moves can extend the sales curve, but the publisher has to balance incremental reach against lower prices or the possibility that a subscription reduces individual purchases.

Subscriptions: monetizing access over time
Game subscriptions exchange a one-time purchase for recurring access. EA describes EA Play and EA Play Pro as services that can provide a selection of full games, in-game content, online services, and other benefits for a recurring monthly or annual fee. Boston Consulting Group (BCG) similarly defines subscriptions as recurring spending on individual games or game services, with Xbox Game Pass and Apple Arcade as examples.

How subscription revenue is recognized
Subscription cash and subscription revenue are not always recorded at the same moment. If a player pays in advance, Microsoft says the amount is unearned revenue until the service period is delivered. Revenue is then recognized over the coverage period. EA says it recognizes subscription revenue ratably over the term, meaning an annual payment is generally spread across the year rather than counted entirely on the payment date.
What makes a subscription valuable
- Retention: Players must continue renewing instead of canceling after sampling the catalog.
- Usage: A service needs enough play time and perceived value to justify its recurring fee.
- Catalog quality: New releases, back-catalog depth, online functionality, and extra content give members reasons to stay.
- Service costs: Hosting, customer support, content operations, and licensing obligations continue while the subscription is active.
A subscription can smooth cash collection and make revenue more predictable than a single launch, but predictability is not the same as profitability. The cited company filings describe revenue recognition and service structures; they do not establish a universal margin or prove that every subscription is profitable.
In-game purchases and live services
In-game purchases let a publisher earn additional revenue after a player starts a game. Free-to-play titles commonly use this model instead of charging for the initial download, while premium games can layer it on top of the original sale. Products include virtual currency, cosmetic items, functional items, expansions, downloadable content, and battle passes.

The basic funnel is broad access followed by optional spending. A player can enter without paying, discover the game’s core loop, and later buy content or currency. Only a portion of players need to pay for the model to work, so the operator focuses on sustained engagement, frequent updates, and a store that offers reasons to return. No universal payer-conversion rate or average spend is available, so those metrics vary by title and should not be assumed.

Premium games can use the same engine
A paid game may sell expansions, cosmetic bundles, season or battle passes, and other add-ons. The original purchase supplies an initial transaction; ongoing content creates additional purchase opportunities. This is why “sales versus in-game purchases” is often a false either-or comparison: a successful premium game can earn from both.
Evidence from publisher results
EA reported $5.330 billion in trailing-twelve-month 2025 live-services-and-other revenue, including $4.116 billion from extra content. These figures cover more than a single item type, so they should be read as evidence of the scale of ongoing services rather than as a direct microtransaction total.
Take-Two reported $3.2642 billion in recurrent consumer spending for the nine months ended December 31, 2024, compared with $786.9 million in full-game and other revenue. In the cited period, RCS represented 80.0% of the quarter’s net revenue and full-game and other represented 20.0%. Take-Two’s definition includes virtual currency, add-on content, in-game purchases, and in-game advertising, so the comparison shows the weight of recurring engagement but does not isolate each component.

In-app advertising is a distinct monetization model, especially for free-to-play mobile games. BCG categorizes it as third-party advertising published inside free-to-play games. The developer earns when ads are delivered or interacted with, while the player may receive access, rewards, or faster progression without paying directly.

Advertising performance depends on impressions, engagement, geography, advertiser demand, and how aggressively ads are shown. More ad placements can increase short-term inventory but may reduce retention if they interrupt play. The cited sources do not provide one comparable global advertising figure, so advertising should be treated as an important layer rather than assigned a universal share of industry revenue.
Licensing and platform distribution
Publishers can license games or content to third parties for distribution or hosting. EA lists licensing games and content to third parties among its offerings. A license may expand reach without requiring the original publisher to operate every storefront or service itself, but the contract determines the fee, term, territory, and responsibilities.
Platform owners earn service revenue from the gaming ecosystems they operate. Microsoft reports gaming within service-and-other revenue and separately describes Xbox subscriptions. Storefront and platform fees are not quantified in the cited sources, so there is no evidence here for a universal commission percentage.
Why platform changes the revenue mix
Mobile, console, and PC audiences have different purchasing habits, discovery systems, hardware economics, and advertising opportunities. Take-Two’s nine-month results for the period ended December 31, 2024 illustrate the scale difference in its own business: $2.1943 billion from mobile, $1.5079 billion from console, and $348.9 million from PC and other.
Best Value
| Take-Two platform category | Revenue for nine months ended December 31, 2024 |
|---|---|
| Mobile | $2.1943 billion |
| Console | $1.5079 billion |
| PC and other | $348.9 million |
BCG’s 2024 chart shows mobile revenue weighted toward in-game purchases, while console revenue has larger shares from subscriptions and digital sales. Its estimate for total global gaming revenue in 2024 was $139 billion. BCG notes that percentages in the chart may not total 100% because of rounding, and the market figure is an estimate rather than an audited industry total.
How the models compare for a publisher
| Business question | Premium sales | Subscriptions | In-game spending | Advertising |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| When is money collected? | Mostly at purchase, often around launch | Monthly or annually, sometimes paid in advance | Whenever a player buys currency, content, or an item | As ads are delivered or monetized |
| What must the company keep doing? | Ship and market compelling releases | Maintain a valuable service and retain members | Keep players engaged and add desirable content | Maintain audience and ad inventory without damaging retention |
| Main financial exposure | Launch forecasting and hit concentration | Churn and ongoing service costs | Player fatigue, content costs, and payer concentration | Ad demand, geography, and excessive ad load |
| Typical accounting pattern | Software sale recognized differently from ongoing services | Generally recognized over the subscription term | May involve obligations tied to delivering virtual items or services | Recognized as advertising delivery occurs under the contract |
The accounting row describes the timing principle, not a single rule for every contract. A company’s filing and the specific promise made to a customer determine when it records revenue.
How a game can monetize across its life cycle
- Launch: Sell the complete game digitally or in packaged form, creating an upfront transaction and testing demand for the franchise.
- Early support: Add patches, online features, and initial downloadable content to improve retention and create optional purchase opportunities.
- Live operation: Offer recurring content, virtual currency, cosmetic or functional items, and battle passes. Free-to-play titles may also show advertising.
- Subscription expansion: Place the game or selected benefits in a subscription service, creating access-based revenue over the coverage period.
- Long tail: Discount the game, release it on another platform, bundle it, or license content to a third party to reach additional players.
Not every game follows all five stages. A short single-player title may rely almost entirely on premium sales, while a mobile service may begin free-to-play and depend on in-game purchases and advertising. The model has to match the game’s audience and the cost of supplying content after launch.
Are games making more from sales or in-game purchases?
There is no single industry-wide answer. Full-game sales remain a core cash event, and EA’s fiscal 2025 figures show that digital downloads alone generated $1.478 billion. However, the cited EA and Take-Two results show that live services and recurrent spending can exceed upfront game revenue for companies with strong, continuously played titles. Take-Two’s nine-month RCS total was more than four times its full-game and other revenue in the reported period, but RCS includes several categories and reflects that company’s portfolio, not every publisher.
The practical answer is to examine the title’s platform and design. A premium console release may depend on launch sales; a free-to-play mobile game may depend on a small group of repeat payers, advertising, or both; and a subscription service depends on renewals across a catalog. Comparing one company’s RCS with another company’s full-game sales without matching periods and definitions can produce a misleading conclusion.
What the numbers do—and do not—prove
EA, Take-Two, Microsoft, and BCG use different reporting periods, definitions, and scopes. EA’s $5.330 billion live-services-and-other figure is a trailing-twelve-month 2025 measure, while Take-Two’s RCS and platform figures cover nine months ended December 31, 2024. BCG’s $139 billion is a 2024 market estimate. These figures are useful for understanding direction and scale, but they should not be added together or treated as directly comparable profit measures.
The available figures also do not establish a universal platform commission, average payer spend, global subscription count, or profitability margin. Revenue tells you how much customers paid under a company’s accounting definition; it does not reveal development, marketing, hosting, licensing, customer-support, or platform costs by model.
