How Video Game Companies Make Money From Games, DLC, and Microtransactions

Video-game companies rarely depend on a single sale. They use a layered model: an upfront purchase can recover development costs and acquire players, while downloadable content (DLC), live services, virtual currency, microtransactions, subscriptions and licensing monetize continued use and expand distribution.

The mix matters because a player’s payment, the publisher’s net receipt and the revenue recognized in financial statements can occur at different times. The sections below show how each stream works, how free-to-play games earn money, and how to compare the models without confusing consumer spending with reported publisher income.

The five main ways game companies earn revenue

Electronic Arts (EA) describes its net revenue in four broad categories: full games sold as digital downloads or packaged goods; live services that primarily include extra content; subscriptions that provide games, in-game content or online services; and licensing games to third parties for distribution or hosting. In practice, publishers combine those categories with recurring in-game purchases and advertising.

1. Base-game sales: premium and buy-to-play releases

A premium game asks the player to pay before playing, either for a physical copy or a digital download. That one-time transaction is commonly called a base-game or full-game sale. It delivers cash early in a title’s life, when marketing and launch expenses are highest, and gives the publisher a large installed player base that can later buy expansions or services.

EA reported $1,478 million in digital full-game-download net revenue for fiscal 2025 and $524 million in packaged-goods net revenue for the same fiscal year. Those are EA’s reported net-revenue figures, not the total amount consumers paid at storefront checkout. EA also reported that 73% of its console units were sold digitally in fiscal 2024, illustrating why digital storefront distribution has become central even for games that still have physical editions.

2. DLC and live services

Downloadable content is any additional game content delivered after, or alongside, the original release. It can be a large expansion, a story chapter, a map pack, a character, a season of content or a smaller item bundle. Some DLC is sold once; other content is delivered through a continuing live-service program.

A live service is an operating model, not a specific product type. The publisher keeps a game running, adds content, maintains servers and engages the community over an extended period. Sales of expansions, cosmetic bundles, season content, virtual currency and other add-ons can all sit inside that operation. EA reported $5,461 million in live services and other net revenue in fiscal 2025, primarily connected with extra content for franchises including Apex Legends, EA SPORTS FC and The Sims 4.

3. Microtransactions and virtual currency

A microtransaction is a repeated, usually small purchase made inside a game. The item can be cosmetic, such as an outfit or visual effect; functional, such as a progression feature; randomized, such as a virtual item whose contents are revealed after purchase; or a bundle of virtual currency that can be spent later. The word describes transaction size and frequency, not whether the game is free-to-play or premium.

Take-Two uses the term recurrent consumer spending for revenue from virtual currency, add-on content, in-game purchases and in-game advertising. A player might therefore pay for currency, spend that currency on an item, and generate revenue for the publisher through the same continuing game service rather than through another copy of the base game.

4. Subscriptions

Subscriptions replace a single ownership payment with recurring monthly or annual charges. A subscription may provide a catalog of complete games, discounts, in-game content, online multiplayer access or other benefits. EA describes EA Play as offering a selection of full games, in-game content, online services and additional benefits.

Subscription economics depend on retention: the service must keep enough members long enough for recurring fees to cover catalog rights, customer support, infrastructure and other operating costs. A subscription can also lower the barrier to trying a game, potentially increasing the audience for later DLC or in-game purchases, although the financial result depends on the terms of the service and the player’s behavior.

5. Licensing and third-party distribution

Licensing lets a publisher authorize another company to distribute or host a game or intellectual property. The licensee may bring the title to a platform, territory or service that the original publisher does not operate directly. EA lists licensing games to third parties as a distinct source of net revenue. Licensing can extend reach without requiring the publisher to own every storefront relationship, but the publisher receives the contractual amount rather than all consumer spending generated by the third party.

How free-to-play games make money

Free-to-play removes the upfront price for the core download, so the business must convert a portion of the player base into spenders after installation. The game is offered as an ongoing service, and revenue comes from optional purchases such as virtual currency, cosmetic items, progression features, randomized items, season content, subscriptions or advertising.

The free-to-play revenue path

  1. Acquire access: The player downloads and starts the core game without buying a full-game license.
  2. Build engagement: Regular updates, multiplayer systems, events or new content give players reasons to return. This is the live-service component.
  3. Offer optional value: The game presents items or services that can improve customization, convenience or progression. The offer may be a direct purchase, a currency bundle or a recurring pass.
  4. Process the transaction: A platform storefront, payment processor and publisher each handle part of the sale. Taxes, refunds and platform fees reduce the publisher’s net receipt.
  5. Recognize revenue: Depending on what was promised, the publisher may record the amount immediately or over the period in which it provides the related service.

Free-to-play does not mean that every player pays, nor does it make microtransactions the only possible income. In-game advertising is another recognized source; Take-Two includes it in its definition of recurrent consumer spending. A free-to-play title can also earn subscription fees, licensing income or payments tied to a third-party distribution deal.

What players can buy

  • Cosmetics: Visual items that change appearance without changing the underlying rules.
  • Progression features: Unlocks or conveniences that affect how quickly content is accessed.
  • Randomized items: Purchases whose exact virtual contents are determined after payment.
  • Virtual currency: A balance purchased with real money and exchanged for in-game goods.
  • Continuing content: Seasonal access, expansions, maps, characters or other DLC.

The distinction between cosmetic and competitive purchases affects consumer-perceived fairness. A cosmetic item can be optional decoration, while a progression or competitive advantage changes how players experience the game. That difference is one of the main consumer-facing trade-offs when comparing monetization models.

What counts as DLC revenue?

DLC revenue is money earned from content added to a game rather than from the original game license. It includes expansions, maps, characters, season content and other add-ons. Some publishers group DLC with broader live-services revenue because the same title may sell a mixture of one-time expansions, recurring passes and small in-game items.

The label describes the content being sold, not the accounting date. If a player buys a season that provides benefits over several months, the publisher may defer part of the amount and recognize it during the estimated service period. Consequently, the date on a player’s receipt and the date shown as reported revenue can differ.

Revenue, bookings, gross spending and net revenue are different

Readers often use “how much the game made” to mean several different measurements:

Measure What it represents Why it matters
Consumer spending The amount players pay at checkout, before deductions. Shows demand, but does not show what the publisher keeps.
Bookings Amounts sold or contracted during a period under a company’s reporting definition. Can include transactions that will be recognized as revenue later.
Net revenue The publisher’s reported sales after applicable platform shares, refunds, taxes or other deductions under its accounting policy. This is the figure in a company’s financial statements, but definitions vary.
Recognized revenue The portion recorded in the current accounting period. For ongoing services, it may be spread over an estimated service period.

Take-Two explains that revenue recognized over time primarily includes game-related services, separate virtual-currency transactions and in-game purchases. A payment can therefore arrive first, be recorded as a contract liability, and become recognized revenue as the publisher delivers access or service. Company filings also use different fiscal years and net-versus-gross presentations, so figures from two publishers should not be compared until their scope and period are aligned.

Where the money is made: platform and geography mix

A game’s platform changes both its audience and the route through which money reaches the publisher. Console and PC storefronts generally charge platform fees; mobile stores add their own commercial terms; payment processing, taxes, refunds and regional pricing further affect net receipts. A title’s reported revenue can therefore look different from its gross consumer spending even when player demand is unchanged.

Studio Wildcard reported the following revenue mix for fiscal 2024:

Platform Share of Studio Wildcard revenue Period and qualification
Console 42.4% Studio Wildcard fiscal 2024 reported mix.
PC 48.1% Studio Wildcard fiscal 2024 reported mix.
Mobile 5.5% Studio Wildcard fiscal 2024 reported mix.

The percentages do not describe the entire industry and are not a forecast. They show why platform strategy matters: a publisher with more PC sales faces a different storefront and pricing mix from one centered on consoles or mobile. Regional prices, local taxes and currency conversion can also change the publisher’s net amount per player.

How the models compare

Model When the player pays Typical content Revenue predictability Dependence on engagement
Premium base game Mostly once, before or at launch. Complete game license. Front-loaded around release. Lower after the sale, though continued play can drive DLC.
DLC and expansions After or alongside the base-game purchase. Maps, characters, stories, seasons and add-ons. Recurring when a release schedule is sustained. Players must remain interested in the game.
Microtransactions Repeatedly during play. Cosmetics, progression features, randomized items and virtual currency. Variable; depends on purchase frequency. High, because the service must keep players returning.
Subscription Monthly or annually. Catalog access, online services, in-game content and benefits. Recurring while members remain subscribed. Retention and perceived catalog value are critical.
Licensing According to a third-party contract. Rights to distribute or host a game or intellectual property. Contract-dependent. Depends on the licensee’s distribution and the agreement.

Premium games trade a larger payment at the start for a clearer ownership proposition. Live services and microtransactions spread monetization across the game’s operating life but require ongoing content, infrastructure and player engagement. Subscriptions trade ownership for continuing access. Licensing broadens distribution while placing part of the customer relationship with another company.

Why publishers combine several streams

Each stream solves a different business problem. Base-game sales can generate launch cash and establish a player community. DLC and live services create reasons to return and opportunities to sell additional content. Microtransactions allow frequent, smaller purchases instead of waiting for a major expansion. Subscriptions add recurring billing and can make a catalog easier to sample. Licensing reaches platforms or regions that the publisher might not serve directly.

The combination also spreads risk. A game may sell strongly at launch but have limited long-term engagement, or it may launch modestly and grow through continuing content. A publisher that reports several streams can analyze performance by title, platform and geography rather than treating every dollar as a copy sold on day one.

Industry scale and what the headline numbers mean

Boston Consulting Group’s December 2024 report estimated total games revenue at $139 billion. That is an industry estimate covering the report’s stated methodology and scope; it is not a single publisher’s income statement and should not be read as the amount companies retain after platform fees, taxes, refunds and other deductions.

Similarly, EA’s fiscal 2025 figures are specific to EA’s fiscal year and accounting definitions. Its $5,461 million in live-services-and-other net revenue cannot be added directly to a different company’s consumer-spending estimate without checking whether the other figure is gross, net, bookings or recognized revenue.

Questions to ask when evaluating a game’s business model

  • What is the payment timing? Is there one upfront price, recurring billing, repeated optional purchases or a contractual license?
  • What is being sold? A complete game, expansion, cosmetic, competitive advantage, virtual currency, service access or advertising opportunity?
  • How much ongoing operation is required? Live services need servers, support and a content pipeline after launch.
  • Who takes a share? Platform fees, payment processing, taxes and refunds affect net receipts.
  • What does the accounting measure? Confirm the company, fiscal year, geographic scope and whether the number is gross, net, bookings or recognized revenue.
  • How does the model feel to players? Consumer-perceived fairness depends on whether purchases are optional, cosmetic, progression-related or competitive.

The practical answer to “Are microtransactions the main source of game-company income?” is therefore company-specific. For some publishers, live services and recurring in-game spending are larger than new full-game sales; for others, premium releases, subscriptions or licensing dominate. Only the publisher’s filing, with its definitions and fiscal period, can establish the mix for that company.
