A video-game cinematic is built in layers, not recorded in one step. A typical sequence moves from story and shot planning to performance capture or keyframe animation, data cleanup and retargeting, animation refinement, camera and timeline authoring, lighting and effects, rendering, and finally integration with gameplay. Motion capture supplies a detailed performance, but it is only raw material: artists still have to solve contacts, repair errors, direct the camera, light the scene, create effects, render the shots, and make the sequence run correctly in the game.
What a game cinematic actually is
A cinematic is a deliberately staged sequence whose timing, camera work, performances, sound hand-off, lighting and effects are controlled more tightly than ordinary gameplay. It may be a short dialogue scene, a long story chapter, a character introduction, a transition between levels or a promotional-quality sequence rendered inside the game engine.

The finished result can be delivered in two broad ways. A pre-rendered cinematic is exported as a video and played back like a movie. An in-engine cinematic is assembled from the same characters, environments and effects used by the game, then evaluated and rendered by the engine when the player reaches a trigger. Many productions use a mixture: real-time scenes for interactive transitions and offline renders for shots that need unusually expensive effects or image quality.
1. Story, previs and shot design come first
Before anyone records an actor, the team decides what the scene must communicate. A director, writer, animator and cinematic designers break the script into shots and establish blocking, eyelines, lens choices, camera movement, cuts and the environment each shot requires.

Previsualization turns intent into a plan
Previs is a rough version of the scene used to test staging and timing. Simple character poses and proxy environments can reveal whether a reveal reads, whether a cut happens at the right emotional beat, and whether the proposed camera can physically see the action. This is where teams identify missing set pieces, collision problems and impossible camera moves before expensive capture and polish.
Shot design determines later work
Lens language, framing and cut rhythm affect performance direction, set construction, facial capture, lighting and render cost. Epic’s description of the Fortnite pipeline lists the progression from set design and motion capture through shot design, rigging, data import, effects and final pixels. In practice, a shot list becomes the spine that lets departments deliver the same performance and assets on a shared timeline.
2. Performance capture records an actor, not a finished character
In a capture volume, performers act the body movement and, when required, facial performance and dialogue. Cameras track markers attached to a tight suit; facial systems may use a separate head-mounted camera or facial markers. The session produces time-coded measurements of position and rotation rather than a ready-to-ship animation.

What the capture team records
- Body motion: marker trajectories and inferred joint rotations for the performer.
- Facial acting: expressions, lip shapes and eye direction when the project has a facial-capture setup.
- Voice and timing: dialogue and other performance cues that help animators synchronize mouth, body and camera beats.
- Reference: video, witness cameras and notes documenting intent, props and contacts.
Capture fidelity does not eliminate artistic direction. A performer may be taller, heavier or proportioned differently from the digital character; a sword, chair or creature may not exist in the volume; and the final camera may show an angle that was never visible to the actor. Those differences are resolved later.
3. Cleanup turns noisy measurements into usable animation
Raw tracking data contains gaps, jitter, marker swaps and physically impossible spikes. An animator or technical artist first cleans the tracks, fills missing samples and solves contacts such as feet planted on a floor or hands gripping a prop. The goal is not to erase personality, but to remove measurement errors that would make the character slide, vibrate or pass through objects.
Curves are the editable form
Animation software converts the cleaned motion into animation curves: time-varying values for joints, controls and facial parameters. Curves let artists change a key pose, adjust the timing of a turn or smooth a transition without throwing away the recorded performance.

The actor’s skeleton and the game’s character rig rarely match. Retargeting maps the source joints and proportions to the destination skeleton, then applies constraints and offsets for the character’s anatomy. A successful transfer preserves intent—such as a sharp shoulder turn or a cautious stride—while respecting the digital character’s height, limb lengths and control rig. The GDC pipeline description identifies cleanup, conversion to animation curves and retargeting as the tools pipeline that delivers data to animators.

Retargeting can expose problems that were hidden in the capture volume. A short character may need a different stride, a creature’s extra limbs need authored motion, and a hand that reached a real prop may miss the in-game prop. These are animation tasks, not automatic exports.
4. Animators refine the performance by hand and with systems
Clean mocap is a starting point for a shot pass. Animators edit poses, timing and arcs; correct intersections; sharpen silhouettes; and make sure the character addresses the camera. They may replace a foot plant, exaggerate a reaction or hold a look for a few frames so the audience reads it.
Where keyframe animation is essential
- Facial and eye work: dialogue, eye focus and subtle expression often need detailed control beyond body capture.
- Props and contacts: weapons, furniture, hands and feet must meet exactly and remain stable through cuts.
- Cloth, hair and secondary motion: simulation or hand-authored offsets are tuned to the shot.
- Stylization: a deliberately exaggerated pose may communicate better than a physically faithful one.
- Continuity: the same character must enter and leave adjacent shots with matching position, hand state and emotional beat.
Ubisoft notes the central trade-off: mocap is realistic but resource-intensive, while keyframe animation offers control but can be long and tedious. Its 2020 work by Félix G. Harvey, Mike Yurick, Derek Nowrouzezahrai and Christopher Pal explored learned in-betweening to connect sparse keyframes with natural motion. The aim, as Ubisoft puts it, is to bridge motion capture and hand animation by bringing mocap quality to a keyframe pipeline. Such tools assist an animator; they do not decide the acting or shot design.
5. Cameras, cuts and timing are authored on a cinematic timeline
Once character animation is in a usable state, the sequence is assembled on a timeline. In Unreal Engine, Sequencer provides tracks for animation, cameras, audio, effects, transforms and gameplay-related controls. A master sequence can contain individual shots, while takes preserve alternate performances or camera versions.

Typical camera workflow
- Create a Cine Camera Actor and choose its lens, sensor and focus settings.
- Place the camera for the shot, then keyframe position, rotation, focal length and focus distance as needed.
- Arrange camera cuts so only the intended view is active at each time range.
- Use the timeline to synchronize dialogue, character beats, effects and transitions.
- Review the shot in context with neighboring shots, because a technically good camera move can still break screen direction or pacing.
Epic documents Take Recorder for capturing performances and the Cine Camera Actor for filming cinematic content. Sequencer also supports blending its animation with gameplay, which is important when a character must hand control back to the player without a visible snap.
6. Lighting, effects and simulation make the shot readable
Lighting artists establish exposure, color, contrast and motivated sources, then tune the result for every camera angle. Effects artists add particles, smoke, fire, destruction, weather and other environmental detail. Cloth, hair, muscle and fat systems may be simulated or baked, depending on the production’s quality target and runtime budget.
Real-time rendering lets departments inspect lighting, depth of field, motion blur and effects while the sequence is still changing. Epic’s Animation Field Guide quotes Sony Pictures Imageworks animation supervisor Craig McPherson: “In a real-time workflow, you are ultimately more iterative, more collaborative, and more creative.” The same guide explains that real-time engines can serve as both presentation medium and final renderer, even though substantial animation may still be created offline and compiled into the engine.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy some shots still render offline
Offline rendering is useful when a project needs simulations, sampling quality or visual complexity that would be impractical at the game’s runtime frame budget. It can support a fixed video with more expensive hair, cloth, volumetrics or compositing. The trade-off is slower feedback and less flexibility if the player can alter the scene.
Best Value
7. Rendering produces the final frames or a runtime sequence
For an in-engine output, the team evaluates the sequence at the target platform’s settings and checks frame pacing, memory, streaming and visual effects. For a movie file or high-quality review, Unreal’s Movie Render Queue can output image sequences with controlled render settings and passes. Image sequences are useful for compositing and for replacing a failed frame without re-exporting an entire video.
Review is iterative: directors check acting and cuts; animators check contacts and silhouettes; lighting artists check exposure; effects artists check simulations; and technical artists check that assets load and the sequence behaves when triggered in a real level. A render that looks correct in an isolated editor preview can fail when streaming, gameplay cameras or platform limits are involved.
8. Engine integration connects the cinematic to gameplay
The final sequence is bound to the character rigs, environments, cameras, audio and effects that ship with the game. Designers then specify the event that starts it: entering a volume, completing an objective, interacting with an object or reaching a scripted gameplay state.

Integration work includes blending from the player’s animation into the cinematic pose, disabling or handing back controls, preserving inventory and state changes, and preventing gameplay logic from fighting the sequence. Unreal documentation covers triggering sequences from events and blending Sequencer animation with gameplay. Testing must include skipped or interrupted cinematics, reloads, different graphics settings and every gameplay path that can reach the trigger.
Pre-rendered versus in-engine cinematics
| Consideration | Pre-rendered video | In-engine sequence |
|---|---|---|
| Visual ceiling | Can use offline effects and quality settings that exceed runtime budgets. | Must meet the target hardware’s frame-time, memory and streaming limits. |
| Iteration | Each meaningful change requires another render and export. | Lighting, cameras and effects can be reviewed earlier in the same environment used by the game. |
| Interactivity | Fixed framing and timing; branching requires separate video assets. | Can respond to gameplay state, camera rules and player transitions. |
| Asset size | Requires encoded video storage and platform-specific playback handling. | Uses game assets and consumes runtime CPU, GPU and memory. |
| Typical reason to choose it | A fixed sequence needs maximum image quality or expensive simulation. | The scene must blend with gameplay, support state changes or remain highly editable. |
How teams choose between mocap, keyframes and reuse
There is no universal best pipeline. The decision follows the shot’s requirements:
- Choose new capture when a distinctive full-body performance, complex interaction or actor-specific nuance is central to the scene.
- Reuse existing capture when a suitable movement already exists; Ubisoft notes that teams investigate reuse because sessions and post-processing are very resource-intensive.
- Favor hand-keyed animation for stylized acting, precise prop contacts, creatures with unusual anatomy or shots that need controlled exaggeration.
- Use a hybrid when captured body motion provides believable weight while animators author facial acting, hands, props and camera-aware poses.
- Prefer real-time review when many departments need rapid feedback or the sequence must blend into gameplay.
- Use offline rendering selectively when effects or image quality cannot fit the runtime budget and the shot can remain fixed.
These choices balance capture fidelity against cleanup cost, iteration speed against offline effect complexity, reuse against the expense of a new session, hand-animation control against mocap speed, and runtime flexibility against the storage and fixed timing of video.
A practical end-to-end checklist
- Write the dramatic objective and divide it into shots.
- Build previs with proxy assets; approve blocking, lens language, cuts and environment needs.
- Prepare the capture volume, suits, facial setup, props, witness cameras and take notes, or create a keyframe plan.
- Record multiple performances and preserve dialogue, timecode and reference footage.
- Clean tracking data, solve contacts and convert motion into editable curves.
- Retarget curves to each game character’s skeleton and repair proportion-driven errors.
- Polish body, face, eyes, props, cloth and continuity with keyframes and procedural systems.
- Author Cine Camera shots, focus, cuts, transitions and alternate takes in the timeline.
- Light the scene, add effects and choose which simulations are real time or offline.
- Render review versions, inspect passes or image sequences, and iterate with the director and departments.
- Bind the sequence to gameplay events, blend control in and out, and test every interrupt, skip, reload and platform condition.
- Deliver either the approved video or the optimized runtime assets and sequence with its dependencies.
What motion capture can—and cannot—do
Mocap can preserve the timing, weight and idiosyncrasies of a human performance far faster than animating every body joint from scratch. It cannot choose the final lens, repair every marker error, solve a character’s different proportions, guarantee a hand will meet a digital prop, light the set, simulate hair or make the sequence safe to trigger during gameplay. The final cinematic is the result of those editorial, technical and artistic passes working together.
