A video downloader saves media by retrieving either a single file or the separate resources that make up a stream, then storing or packaging them for playback. Which quality and format choices are available depends on how the service delivers the video, which tracks it provides, and what the target player supports. Being able to retrieve a stream does not itself mean you have permission to save it.
What a video downloader does
For a direct, progressive download, a client requests a media file over HTTP and writes the returned bytes to storage. Playback can begin after the file is downloaded, or sometimes while it is still arriving, depending on the player and file.

Streaming works differently. Rather than one complete media file, an adaptive stream may comprise many segments described by a playlist or manifest. A compatible client reads that description, requests the needed resources, and may choose among representations—such as different resolutions or bit rates—as network conditions change. RFC 9317 distinguishes delivering media in segments during playback from downloading a media file and playing it after completion: RFC 9317.

How HLS and MPEG-DASH deliver video
HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) and MPEG-DASH are adaptive streaming approaches that deliver media over HTTP using descriptions of available resources. They can provide multiple representations, allowing a compatible player to adapt playback to network conditions. Neither protocol guarantees that a stream is available as an unprotected file.

These differences matter when choosing a compatible player or understanding why a stream may involve separate audio and video resources. A client that can lawfully access an unencrypted presentation may need to retrieve selected segments from more than one track and package them together. Exact stream structure and access requirements vary by service.
How downloaders handle format and quality options
Quality options usually correspond to the representations a service makes available, not to a downloader creating unlimited quality levels. A stream might offer several resolutions or bit rates; a direct file may be offered in only one version. The downloader can present only the resources it can identify and is authorized to access.

Audio, video, and subtitles may be provided as separate tracks. Depending on the stream and output format, a downloader may select tracks and combine them into a local package. A missing audio track, subtitle, or resolution can reflect what the service provides, how the stream is described, or what the client supports—not necessarily a fault in the saved file.
- Choose for the intended player: Check the supported container and codecs, not just the file extension.
- Choose quality according to need: Higher-resolution or higher-bit-rate versions generally require more storage and bandwidth; a downloader can only select from options actually exposed by the source.
- Check track selection: Confirm that the desired audio language and subtitles are included or saved separately when the service offers them.
- Distinguish save from convert: A “merge” or “save as” option may package existing tracks, while “convert” may re-encode them. The exact behavior depends on the application.
Containers, codecs, remuxing, and transcoding
A container packages one or more encoded media streams and related information. A codec describes how a media stream is encoded and decoded. MP4, fragmented MP4, MPEG transport stream, and WebM refer to packaging or container formats; H.264/AVC, HEVC/H.265, and AV1 are video codecs. An extension such as “.mp4” therefore does not, on its own, tell you every compatibility detail.
Apple’s HLS authoring specification lists H.264/AVC, HEVC/H.265, Dolby Vision, and AV1 as video encodings. For HLS authoring, it requires fragmented MP4 or MPEG transport stream for H.264 and fragmented MP4 for HEVC. These are Apple’s requirements for that context, not universal rules for every video file or player: Apple HLS authoring specification.

- Remuxing repackages already encoded streams in a different container without necessarily changing the compressed audio or video.
- Transcoding decodes and re-encodes streams. It can change compatibility, file size, quality, and processing time.
Consequently, a container change does not necessarily improve quality, and a conversion can reduce it. A device’s supported codec-and-container combination is a more useful compatibility check than the extension alone.

A stream may require a signed-in account, use encryption, or be subject to access controls. A downloader’s ability to identify a playlist or request a resource does not establish permission to copy it, and this explanation does not describe how to bypass DRM or other controls.
For readers keeping large files they are authorized to retain, a portable external SSD can provide additional local storage. It is an option for storing files already obtained legitimately; it does not unlock a stream or overcome DRM.
