The best fit depends on your device and whether you want a command line or a graphical app. For desktop control, yt-dlp is the flexible command-line option; Parabolic and Open Video Downloader put yt-dlp behind a desktop interface. On Android, Seal is a downloader GUI, while NewPipe is a streaming client that also supports downloads. The sources reviewed here do not establish a current iPhone or iPad recommendation.
Use any downloader only for videos you are authorized to save. An app’s download feature does not itself grant permission, and a tool’s support for a platform does not mean every download is allowed by that platform.

Which open-source video downloader should you choose?
| Need | Best fit | Why | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Command-line control on desktop | yt-dlp | It is a command-line audio/video downloader with release builds for Windows, macOS, and Linux. | It takes more setup and comfort with a terminal; some YouTube workflows need additional components. |
| Desktop graphical app | Parabolic | A yt-dlp frontend for Linux, Windows, and macOS, with format selection, concurrent downloads, subtitles, and metadata. | Check current package availability for your operating system; its README describes distinct Linux and Windows interfaces. |
| Cross-platform desktop GUI | Open Video Downloader | Its project lists Windows, macOS, and Linux, plus controls for playlists, quality, subtitles, and metadata. | It wraps yt-dlp, so extraction behavior can change with the underlying tool and upstream platform changes. |
| Android download manager | Seal | An Android GUI based on yt-dlp with playlists, subtitles, queue management, and command templates. | Android only; use the project’s official release or F-Droid route and check release status. |
| Android browsing and offline playback | NewPipe | An open-source Android client offering video, audio, and caption options as well as downloads. | It is not a desktop app or an Apple-device option; storage access and service extraction can be limiting. |
| iPhone or iPad | No recommendation established | The sources reviewed do not establish an equivalent current iOS downloader. | NewPipe explicitly excludes Apple platforms; do not assume an Android app’s availability carries over to iOS. |
Desktop options
yt-dlp: maximum control, command line required
yt-dlp describes itself as a command-line audio/video downloader supporting thousands of sites. That is the project’s description, not a guarantee that every video on a listed service will work. Authentication, regional restrictions, rate limits, platform changes, and access controls can all affect a particular download.

The project publishes standalone releases for Windows and macOS, Linux binaries, and a platform-independent Python-based binary. For merging separate audio and video streams or other post-processing, yt-dlp recommends FFmpeg and ffprobe. Its README says full YouTube support also requires yt-dlp-ejs and a JavaScript runtime such as Deno, Node.js, Bun, or QuickJS. Stable, nightly, and master channels are available; most readers should start with stable rather than a pre-release channel.
#1 Best Overall
- NEW: Now with integrated video search
- NEW: Playlist Download with one click - NEW: Customize the audio quality
- NEW: Direct download as MP3
- NEW: Support for multiple audio tracks
- High-speed downloads in up to 4K and 8K quality
Choose yt-dlp if you want command-line options and are willing to set up dependencies. If you prefer menus and buttons, a frontend may be more approachable, though it still relies on yt-dlp’s extraction behavior.
Parabolic: a yt-dlp desktop frontend
Parabolic offers a graphical workflow on Linux, Windows, and macOS. Its documented features include concurrent downloads; MP4, WebM, MP3, Opus, FLAC, and WAV format choices; and metadata and subtitle support. Check the repository for current installation packages and platform-specific interface details before installing.

Open Video Downloader: another cross-platform GUI
Open Video Downloader describes itself as a desktop application built around yt-dlp. The project lists Windows, macOS—including Intel and Apple Silicon builds—and Linux packages. Its interface supports video and audio downloads, subtitles, metadata, playlists, quality selection, and filename and location controls. As with Parabolic, the graphical layer does not insulate it from changes in yt-dlp or the services it extracts from.

Android options
Seal: a downloader-focused GUI
Seal is an Android graphical downloader based on yt-dlp. Its project lists playlist downloads, subtitle embedding, metadata and thumbnail embedding for extracted audio, a download manager, and custom yt-dlp command templates. The repository directs users to stable releases on GitHub or F-Droid. Install through one of those project-directed routes, verify the current release, and avoid unofficial repacks or similarly named apps. The repository describes Seal’s source as GPLv3 and restricts other parties from using the Seal name for downloader apps or derivatives.
NewPipe: a streaming client with download features
NewPipe is better understood as an open-source Android streaming client than as a dedicated downloader. Its official site describes video, audio, and caption options. Its device FAQ lists Android phones and tablets from Android 6, Android/Google TV, and Android Auto; it says Apple devices are not supported. The FAQ also says NewPipe does not offer account authentication.

- 1. Support most popular formats including DivX, Xvid, VOB, MOV, FLV, MPEG, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, RMVB, RM, MPG, MP4, 3GP, MP3, WMA, OGG, M4A, Blu-ray video and other files.
- 2. Set different video and audio parameters, select video encoder, video resolution/frame rate/bit rate, select audio encoder, and audio sample rate/audio channel/audio bit rate.
- 3. Friendly interface with functions respectively divided and step to step user guide stated.
- 4. Free technical support and full money-back guarantee.
- 5. Reliable and 100% risk free.
Service extraction is not guaranteed: NewPipe documents that anti-bot responses or temporary IP blocks can interrupt access. Treat it as an option, not a promise that every video will remain reachable or downloadable.

Video and audio may be separate streams
Some services, including YouTube, serve higher-quality video and audio separately. The yt-dlp FAQ explains that merging those streams can require an external tool; yt-dlp recommends FFmpeg for merging and post-processing. An app may therefore download a file successfully yet still need FFmpeg for the format or quality combination you selected.
Best Value
- NEW: Playlist Download with one click - NEW: Customize the audio quality
- Download your favorite YouTube videos as MP4 video or MP3 audio
- High-speed downloads in up to 4K and 8K quality
- Lifetime License – no subscription required!
- Software compatible with Windows 11, 10
Likewise, services such as YouTube do not directly provide MP3 files for retrieval. Getting an MP3 may require extracting audio and transcoding it, rather than downloading a ready-made MP3 file. Format labels in a frontend do not remove that distinction.
Android folder access can be unintuitive
NewPipe’s download FAQ says Android 11 and later restrict app access to user folders through the Storage Access Framework. It advises selecting a separate accessible folder rather than the Downloads folder, storage root, or SD-card root. SD-card offline use is described, but Storage Access Framework support varies by device. A microSD card is relevant only if your device supports removable storage; it is not required to use a downloader.
Supported sites are not a reliability guarantee
All the graphical tools here depend on extraction software whose behavior can change when a platform changes its service. A listed site, a successful past download, or a project feature does not guarantee access to a specific video. Restrictions, account requirements, regional availability, rate limits, and temporary service blocks can alter the result.
Quick Recap
How to pick and install safely
- Match the tool to your device. Choose yt-dlp, Parabolic, or Open Video Downloader for desktop; Seal or NewPipe for Android. The reviewed sources do not establish an iOS choice.
- Choose the interface you will use. yt-dlp is command-line oriented; Parabolic and Open Video Downloader are desktop GUIs; Seal is an Android downloader GUI; NewPipe combines browsing and offline options.
- Check dependencies against your intended use. For yt-dlp workflows involving separate streams or post-processing, check FFmpeg/ffprobe requirements; for full YouTube support, check the project’s yt-dlp-ejs and JavaScript-runtime requirements.
- Use the official project route. Install from the linked project repository or the named distribution channel it recommends, and check current releases and packages for your OS or device.
- Confirm you can save to the intended location. On Android 11 and later, folder selection can be constrained; consult NewPipe’s download FAQ for its documented folder guidance.
- Check permission before downloading. Follow the video owner’s permissions and the relevant platform terms and laws; software capability alone does not authorize copying.
At a glance: the practical trade-offs
- Most control: yt-dlp, if you are comfortable with a terminal and dependency setup.
- Desktop GUI: Parabolic or Open Video Downloader; both use yt-dlp underneath, so extraction changes can affect them too.
- Android downloader workflow: Seal, with official release channels and device storage access worth checking.
- Android client plus downloads: NewPipe, with no Apple support and no guarantee of uninterrupted service extraction.
