How VHS Was Meant to Bring Real Application Traffic Into Kubernetes Tests

VHS was introduced in 2021 as a way to capture selected production traffic and replay it in non-production tests. Here is how the approach was described, its limits, and what teams should verify before adoption.

VHS was presented in 2021 as an open-source way to capture selected production application traffic and replay it against an application in a non-production environment. The idea is to give tests a workload closer to observed use than a generic request flood, not to guarantee accurate results or replace application-specific test design.

What problem was VHS intended to address?

A test can only tell a team so much if its workload bears little resemblance to how the application is used. A generic load test—such as repeatedly sending requests to one endpoint—can expose basic failures, but may miss the mix and sequence of requests that matter in actual use. Building a representative workload by hand can be more informative, but takes effort to understand and recreate.

In a webinar recorded February 10, 2021, Noah Abrahams, then StormForge’s Open Source Advocate, described VHS as a way to use production traffic in non-production testing. The event’s premise was that performance or behavior measurements are more useful when the test represents how an application runs in production. That is the speaker’s rationale, not a benchmark showing that VHS improves accuracy by a measured amount. The Linux Foundation event listing and webinar transcript document the presentation.

How was the traffic capture and replay workflow described?

Capture selected traffic

The webinar described capturing application traffic in production, with a Kubernetes sidecar as one deployment approach. HTTP traffic and HTTP Archive (HAR) output were given as examples. The package documentation also describes command-line use, so the project was not presented solely as a sidecar deployment. The Go package page describes VHS as a cloud-native network traffic tool.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Store it, then replay it safely

Captured traffic was described as being saved to a file or manifest using a chosen storage backend; local disk and S3 were examples. Teams could then replay stored traffic against an application in a non-production stage. The package page additionally describes real-time analysis into Prometheus metrics or saving traffic for offline analysis and load testing.

  1. Observe: Select the application traffic relevant to the test and capture it using the chosen deployment approach.
  2. Store: Save the capture using a configured backend, such as local disk or S3, as described in the webinar.
  3. Prepare: Review the capture for sensitive data, stateful assumptions, and requests that could cause real-world side effects.
  4. Replay: Send the stored workload to an isolated, non-production target and observe the application’s behavior and metrics.
  5. Interpret: Relate the results to application behavior and test goals; a replay supplies input, not an automatic explanation of what the results mean.

What does traffic replay improve—and what does it not prove?

Observed traffic can give a test a more production-like stimulus than an arbitrary request pattern. It may help teams exercise a broader mix of requests without hand-authoring every interaction. But realistic input is only one part of a useful test: the target environment, data, dependencies, state, and measurement strategy also affect what a result means.

The webinar did not provide benchmark results comparing generic load, handcrafted tests, and VHS replay. It also cautioned that teams need to understand their applications to interpret results. Replay therefore does not establish that a test reproduces every production condition, that performance conclusions are automatically accurate, or that application-specific test design is unnecessary.

What risks must teams address before replaying production captures?

Personal and sensitive information

Captures may contain personal or confidential data. In the webinar’s Q&A, GDPR and payment-card data were raised as concerns. The presenter said VHS was not then sanitizing captured data and discussed sanitization as future work. The presentation did not establish compliance or provide a complete mitigation design. Teams must verify how data is collected, protected, transformed, retained, and deleted before using any capture.

State and unintended effects

Requests that were harmless in their original context may create or alter records when replayed. Consider whether the application depends on session state, timestamps, unique identifiers, external services, or the ordering of requests. Use an isolated target and test data, and prevent replay from reaching live payment, messaging, or other consequential systems unless those interactions are deliberately controlled.

Security and operational controls

Traffic files can be sensitive artifacts and may expose credentials, tokens, internal endpoints, or customer details. Define access and storage controls, and decide who can initiate a replay and where it may be sent. The webinar raised traffic protection and encryption as areas of concern; it does not establish that VHS provides a particular security control. Confirm capabilities in the version being considered rather than assuming the historical presentation describes present behavior.

How should VHS be evaluated against other testing approaches?

The useful comparison is not simply “real traffic versus synthetic traffic.” Teams should weigh workload realism against the work needed to curate and maintain it, the safety of data and side effects, and the visibility available during the run.

Approach Workload character Effort and safety questions Evidence in the webinar
Generic load Broad or repetitive requests, potentially concentrated on one endpoint. Easy to generate in some cases, but may not reflect actual request mix; validate whether it exercises the behavior under test. Used as a contrast in the speaker’s rationale; no comparative benchmark was supplied.
Handcrafted workload Designed by engineers based on their understanding of application use. Can be tailored to the test, but takes engineering work to understand and recreate relevant traffic. Described as a potentially more representative option that requires effort; no measured comparison was supplied.
Captured traffic replay Reuses selected observed production traffic as test input. Requires decisions about data protection, state, side effects, target isolation, storage, and result interpretation. VHS was presented as a capture-and-replay tool; no accuracy, throughput, or adoption figures were given.

What is known about the project’s status?

The webinar described VHS as a new community project and said that, at that time, it had few contributions from outside StormForge and no formal maintainer process. The presenter also said the project might change names because “VHS” was difficult to search and raised a trademark concern. A later package page identifies github.com/rename-this/vhs, but the available sources do not establish whether it is actively maintained today, its latest release, licensing, current protocol support, or whether its setup instructions remain current. A December 16, 2020 launch announcement provides additional historical context, not proof of current project health.

Other capabilities—including support for protocols such as SQL or gRPC, sanitization and encryption, more storage plugins, session management, metrics, and traffic shaping—were raised as possible future work in the presentation. They should be treated as roadmap discussion from 2021, not as features or commitments established for a current version.

What should a team verify before considering adoption?

  • Whether the repository and package are maintained, and which release or commit is appropriate.
  • The current license, supported protocols, deployment modes, storage backends, and installation requirements.
  • Whether sensitive data can be removed or transformed before storage and replay, and what security controls are available.
  • How replay handles sessions, timestamps, request ordering, and requests with external or persistent side effects.
  • How replay is isolated from production and how metrics or logs will answer the test’s specific question.
  • Whether the team can explain the application behavior behind the results rather than treating the replay itself as proof.
