VCT teams are funded through several separate streams, not one league salary. Riot Games describes a partnership model that combines a fixed annual stipend, a percentage of digital-sales revenue from esports content, tournament prize money and incentives for extra marketing activity. Teams then use that organization-level income to pay players and coaches and to cover travel, housing, facilities, content production, staff, taxes and other operating costs.
Riot’s public announcements do not establish a universal Valorant player salary, a standard split between organizations and players, or a required percentage of prize money that must be passed to competitors. The figures that are public are generally team-level distributions or event payments, so they should not be quoted as individual compensation.

What money does a VCT team actually receive?
A professional Valorant organization can have predictable revenue, performance-based revenue and activity-based payments at the same time. Those categories matter because they arrive under different eligibility rules and have different levels of certainty.

What Riot reported for the 2025 season
Riot’s 2025 VALORANT Esports report gives the clearest recent picture of the scale of team distributions:
| Figure | What it represents | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| $105.2 million | Total shared with VCT teams during the 2025 season. | This is a team-level distribution across the VCT ecosystem, not an average salary or a per-team guarantee. |
| More than $86 million | The portion of the 2025 distribution that Riot said came from digital goods. | It reflects digital-product revenue shared with VCT teams; it does not mean each player received a direct share. |
| $1.2 million | Stipend pool dedicated to non-partner teams that qualified for Stage 2 playoffs. | Riot stated the payment as $75,000 per team. The pool is separate from individual player salaries. |
| More than $500,000 | The Champions competitive share available to qualifying non-partner teams in recent years. | Riot described this as a recent-years figure, not a fixed annual amount or a guaranteed payment to every non-partner team. |
The $105.2 million total cannot be divided into a reliable “average VCT salary.” Public material does not say how much went to player contracts, coaches, analysts, housing, offices, travel, content teams, management, taxes or organizational profit. Team size and contract terms also vary, so a simple division would be misleading.
How the partnership model pays organizations
Teams receive support instead of paying an entry fee
In the partnership era, Riot says teams retain their league place by investing in marketing, broadcast content, fan activation and player support rather than paying an entry fee. The commercial exchange is designed around long-term participation and audience development.
Riot summarizes the arrangement this way: “In this model, Riot pays the pro teams a fixed annual stipend, a percentage of digital sales for esports content, prize pools for participating in our competitions, and incentives for incremental marketing activities above the basic requirements.” Each phrase describes a different source of money. The stipend is the stable base; digital sales fluctuate with fan purchases; prize pools depend on competition; and incentives require additional activity.

Partner teams have a more stable competition slot
A partner organization’s main financial advantage is predictability. It can plan contracts and operating expenses around a recurring base payment and an established place in the competition. That does not eliminate risk: the team still has payroll, travel, content and business costs, and the amount of variable revenue can change from season to season.
How open teams can earn under the announced 2027 structure
Riot’s 2027 plan keeps partner teams while allowing any team to enter through regional qualifiers and tournaments. The announced structure sets fixed qualification payments for open teams:
| Qualification | Fixed payment announced for 2027 | What it is not |
|---|---|---|
| Kickoff or a Cup | $100,000 | Not a guaranteed annual salary, and not payment to each player. |
| Masters | $200,000 | Not the entire event prize pool or a required player split. |
| Champions | $400,000 | Not a promise that every qualifying team will receive the same total after other revenues and costs. |
Riot also says VCT tournaments will provide annual prize pools above $6 million under the 2027 structure, with payouts increasing from Cups to Masters to Champions. Open teams remain eligible for prize-pool earnings and other incentives in addition to the fixed qualification payments. The announcement does not publish a universal formula for distributing an organization’s receipts among players, coaches and owners.
Partner teams receive a guaranteed base payment each year under the announced plan, but Riot has not publicly stated the amount. Open-team qualification money is therefore easier to understand as event-triggered revenue, while the partner base is recurring support tied to the partnership arrangement.

Do VCT players get a salary?
Players can be paid under employment or independent-contractor agreements with their organizations, but public Riot materials do not provide a universal salary range. There is no published global minimum in the supplied figures, no standard regional salary table and no official player-versus-organization split for prize money or digital-goods revenue.
A team’s receipt and a player’s pay are different accounting events. An organization may use its revenue for:
- Player and coach salaries, bonuses and benefits.
- Performance bonuses tied to qualification or placement.
- Housing, facilities, equipment and training support.
- Travel, visas, meals and event preparation.
- Content production, social media, analysts and administrative staff.
- Taxes, legal services, insurance and other business expenses.
Whether a player receives a fixed salary, a share of prize money, a digital-sales bonus or another incentive depends on the private contract. A public team-distribution number cannot answer that question without the contract terms.

Salary and stipend revenue
Salary is a contractual payment from an organization to an individual. A team may budget for it before knowing how far it will advance in a tournament. Riot’s stipend and base-payment descriptions refer to money paid to organizations, which then meet their operating obligations.

Prize and qualification payments
Prize money is tied to participation or performance. A team can earn a tournament payment by qualifying, placing or both, but the amount and timing depend on the event rules. The 2027 open-team figures are fixed qualification payments, while the separate prize pools increase through the Cup, Masters and Champions tiers.
Contract terms determine the player’s share
Riot has not stated a required percentage of prize money that must go to players or coaches. Community estimates may describe individual deals, but they should not be presented as official compensation rules. To know a competitor’s actual earnings, the relevant employment or player agreement would be needed.

Team capsules, season capsules and Champions collections are in-game digital goods that let fans support the competitive ecosystem. Riot says proceeds from esports content are shared with VCT teams, and its 2025 report attributed more than $86 million of the team distribution to digital goods.

Buying a capsule is not the same as paying a particular player’s salary, and the public figures do not identify a guaranteed amount per team, per roster or per item sold. Sales can also vary by product, season and fan interest, making digital-goods revenue less predictable than a contractual base payment.

What “support” can cover in practice
Riot’s public descriptions do not impose a published allocation formula. Teams decide how to combine their receipts with sponsorships, merchandise, media income or other business revenue, then choose an operating budget.
A financially sustainable plan must account for the timing of each stream. A recurring payment can support guaranteed payroll; prize money may arrive after an event; digital-sales distributions may be reported and paid on a different schedule; and an activity incentive may require the team to spend money before it qualifies. A team that treats every announced figure as immediately available cash can overextend itself.
Global-event support also affects costs. Under the announced 2027 model, Riot says travel for global events will be funded. That can reduce a team’s travel burden for qualifying events, but it does not imply that all ordinary-season expenses, local travel, housing or staff costs are covered.

Partner teams and open teams compared
| Question | Partner model | Open-team route in the 2027 plan |
|---|---|---|
| How is entry secured? | A continuing partnership place, maintained through required investment and participation. | Qualification through regional qualifiers and tournaments. |
| Guaranteed base payment | Yes; Riot says partner teams receive a guaranteed annual base payment, but the amount is not stated. | Not described as a guaranteed annual payment. |
| Fixed event payment | Not the defining feature of the partnership model. | $100,000 for Kickoff or a Cup, $200,000 for Masters and $400,000 for Champions, as announced for 2027. |
| Digital-goods share | Included in Riot’s description of support for VCT teams. | The announcement confirms prize-pool and other incentive eligibility; it does not state a universal digital-goods allocation for every open team. |
| Prize eligibility | Eligible through participation and performance. | Eligible through qualification, participation and performance. |
| Competition-slot stability | More stable while partnership requirements are met. | Dependent on qualifying through the competitive pathway. |
| Cash-flow timing | More predictable because of the annual base, with variable revenue layered on top. | More dependent on reaching the relevant event and receiving its payment. |
How to interpret a team’s “earnings” claim
When an organization announces that it earned a particular amount, check five details before treating it as player pay:
- Identify the year. Riot’s $105.2 million figure is for the 2025 season, while the $100,000, $200,000 and $400,000 amounts belong to the announced 2027 structure.
- Identify the recipient. “Shared with VCT teams” means an organization-level distribution, not an equal payment to everyone on a roster.
- Identify the revenue type. A stipend, digital-goods share, prize pool and qualification payment have different eligibility and timing.
- Check whether the amount is a pool or a per-team figure. The $1.2 million Stage 2 playoff stipend pool was stated as $75,000 per qualifying team; it is not a player pool.
- Separate gross revenue from take-home pay. Payroll, taxes, travel, staff and facilities may be paid before any owner profit or discretionary bonus is calculated.
What remains private
Public materials reviewed for the VCT payment model do not disclose individual player or coach salary ranges, regional minimums, contract splits, tax treatment or a mandatory distribution percentage. The official competition rules index identifies where competition rules are maintained, but compensation provisions can sit in private participation agreements and employment contracts.
That privacy explains why two teams with similar tournament results can report different financial outcomes. Their roster costs, bonuses, staffing, facilities, sponsorship arrangements and contract clauses may all differ, even when their Riot-related receipts are comparable.
