For a standard UPI payment that debits your bank account, you normally approve the payment by entering your UPI PIN in the app. The PIN proves that you intend to send money; it does not set the amount you are allowed to send. UPI limits depend on the payment’s purpose and type, merchant status, and your bank or app’s own controls.
How UPI payment authentication works
Device registration and the UPI PIN
UPI runs through a participating app linked to a bank account. NPCI describes device binding as the first authentication factor in the UPI ecosystem; the UPI PIN is the step that approves a normal payment debit. Changing your phone, SIM, or app can require you to register again. NPCI’s UPI ecosystem description and its UPI FAQ explain these roles.
The UPI PIN is a four- or six-digit secret, depending on the account and setup. It is not the same as an MPIN used for a bank’s mobile-banking app. Enter the UPI PIN only when you are authorizing a payment you intend to make. You do not need it to receive money or claim a reward; NPCI’s BHIM UPI guidelines, updated June 4, 2026, say that only sending money requires the PIN.
Setting or resetting a PIN
In BHIM, NPCI’s 2026 guidelines describe setting or resetting a PIN from the bank-account section of the app, using debit-card details and an OTP. NPCI also introduced UIDAI face authentication as an optional alternative to card credentials or Aadhaar OTP for PIN setup or reset in its October 7, 2025 circular. Which option appears can depend on the app, bank, and device.

Optional biometric approval
NPCI’s October 2025 circular introduced on-device fingerprint or face authentication as an optional alternative to entering the UPI PIN. The circular set an initial per-transaction cap of ₹5,000 and required compatibility and security checks, including restrictions for rooted or jailbroken devices and checks of biometric enrollment and status. NPCI’s circular index later lists OC-226A as an enhancement to the biometric limit, but the revised amount is not established here. Treat ₹5,000 as the initial cap, not a confirmed current cap.
This biometric cap concerns that authentication option; it is separate from the amount ceiling for a payment approved with a PIN. NPCI’s circular says the PIN is the standard factor for transactions, while excluding mandate execution from that statement. A recurring or mandate payment therefore should not be assumed to prompt for a fresh PIN in the same way as a user-initiated payment.

UPI Lite is a separate case
UPI Lite is a distinct low-value payment mode, not a general PIN-free setting for ordinary UPI transfers. The RBI Annual Report 2023-24 describes payments up to ₹500 in this mode as possible without PIN authentication.
What is the UPI transaction limit?
There is no single ceiling that applies to every UPI payment. A useful starting point is that the Reserve Bank of India described ₹1 lakh per transaction as the then-normal cap in its August 8, 2024 announcement. That announcement raised the cap for tax payments to ₹5 lakh. These dated figures are reference points, not a complete statement of every current category or a guarantee that your bank will allow the maximum.

Purpose and payment category matter
Some specified payment purposes have higher ceilings. The RBI announced a ₹5 lakh per-transaction limit for payments to hospitals and educational institutions in 2023, and later recorded the increase as implemented. See the RBI’s category announcement and annual report. NPCI’s FAQ also lists category ceilings for uses such as capital markets, collections, insurance, foreign inward remittances, IPOs, and the Retail Direct Scheme. Those FAQ figures are historical category guidance; later circulars may affect the current rules, so they should not be treated as an exhaustive live matrix.
Merchant status and payment type matter
NPCI’s August 28, 2025 OC-185B addendum provides higher caps for specified categories when the merchant is classified as a “Verified Merchant.” It assigns acquiring banks a role in ensuring eligible merchants meet NPCI requirements. A payment to a merchant is not automatically eligible for a higher ceiling, and the merchant-category enhancements do not mean that person-to-person transfers inherit those higher caps; P2P limits remain under existing guidance.

Your bank or app can set lower limits
NPCI allows member banks to apply internal limits within NPCI’s ceilings. Your bank or app can therefore reject a payment below a published UPI maximum. Internal controls may include a daily amount or transaction-count limit, or restrictions tied to first use or a device change. For example, Federal Bank’s published guidance gives ₹1 lakh or 20 P2P transactions per account in 24 hours as that bank’s rule; it is not a universal UPI limit. Check the limits shown by your own bank or app.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why can a payment fail below ₹1 lakh?
Being below ₹1 lakh does not by itself guarantee that a payment will go through. That figure was the RBI’s general reference cap in August 2024, and category rules and bank controls can differ. A payment may also fail if authentication does not succeed.

- Your bank or app limit is lower: Check the per-payment, daily amount, and transaction-count rules for the account you are using.
- The payment category has its own conditions: A higher ceiling may apply only to a specified purpose and, for merchant payments, to a Verified Merchant.
- Your PIN was entered incorrectly: An incorrect UPI PIN causes the transaction to fail. Repeated incorrect attempts may temporarily block UPI sending, depending on the bank.
- Your registration or device changed: A SIM, device, or app change can require UPI re-registration and may be subject to bank or app controls.
If a failed attempt has debited your account, check the transaction status in the app and follow your bank’s support or dispute process rather than repeating the payment immediately.
What happens if you enter the wrong UPI PIN?
The payment fails when the PIN is incorrect. If you are unsure of the PIN, use the app’s bank-account section to reset it through the method available for your account instead of repeatedly guessing. NPCI notes that repeated errors may temporarily block sending payments, with the restriction depending on the bank. Its FAQ covers wrong-PIN failures.
Quick Recap
Quick checks before sending a large payment
- Identify the payment type: Establish whether it is person-to-person or merchant-to-merchant, and whether it belongs to a specified higher-limit category.
- For a merchant payment, confirm eligibility: A higher category ceiling may require the merchant to be verified under NPCI’s rules.
- Check your own bank or app: Confirm any lower per-payment, daily amount, count, first-use, or device-change restriction.
- Use the authentication method presented: For an ordinary bank-account debit, enter your UPI PIN only to approve the intended payment. If using biometrics, check the amount supported by your app, since the initial ₹5,000 cap was later subject to an indexed amendment.
