Sterlite Technologies vs. HFCL: How Their Telecom Fiber Businesses Compare

STL and HFCL both make optical fiber and cable, but their broader portfolios differ. Their latest cited order-book figures come from different dates and do not establish a current winner.

Both Sterlite Technologies (STL) and HFCL make optical fiber and optical fiber cable, but neither is simply a cable maker. STL’s latest company disclosures put optical connectivity for AI data centers in the spotlight, while HFCL combines fiber and cable with telecom and defense equipment and network solutions. Their published order-book figures are from different dates and cover company-wide activity, so they do not establish which fiber business—or company—is larger today.

How STL and HFCL differ

Comparison Sterlite Technologies (STL) HFCL
Disclosed business scope Optical fiber and cable products plus connectivity solutions for network and data-center applications. STL Q1 FY27 release Optical fiber and optical fiber cable, telecom and defense equipment, and network solutions. HFCL FY2024-25 annual report
Recent product emphasis in the cited disclosures AI data-center connectivity, including its Neuralis portfolio, alongside optical connectivity products. STL Q1 FY27 release Fiber and cable within a wider telecom, defense, and network-solutions portfolio. HFCL’s FY25 results release said it expected optical fiber and cable revenue to grow substantially in FY26; that was a forecast made in May 2025, not confirmation of the outcome. HFCL FY25 results release
Order-book figures cited here ₹18,618 crore at June 30, 2026; company-wide open order book. STL Q1 FY27 release ₹11,125 crore at December 31, 2025, in the Q3 FY26 results release excerpt; company-wide figure. HFCL Q3 FY26 results release

The practical distinction is emphasis, not an exclusive product category: both participate in optical fiber and cable, while the disclosures cited show different surrounding portfolios and strategic priorities.

What STL’s latest reported results show

STL’s Q1 FY27 covered the quarter ended June 30, 2026. The company reported revenue of ₹1,910 crore and EBITDA of ₹397 crore, and an open order book of ₹18,618 crore at quarter end. These are company-wide results, not fiber-segment revenue, profit, or orders. Read STL’s Q1 FY27 release.

AI data-center connectivity is a prominent theme

In that release, STL reported a multi-year contract valued at US$1.11 billion—described by the company as more than ₹10,000 crore—to supply optical connectivity products for next-generation AI data centers. It also reported multiple hyperscaler orders worth more than US$100 million for its Neuralis portfolio, as well as a long-haul dark-fiber, high-density micro-cable order. These are company-reported contract and order wins, not evidence that the full values have already been recognized as revenue.

STL describes Neuralis as an AI data-center connectivity suite. The release also mentions CONCAT pre-connectorized solutions and US Conec-certified MMC pre-terminated solutions. STL said it had “785+ patents filed and granted”; that company-stated figure combines applications filed and patents granted, rather than counting granted patents alone.

What HFCL’s disclosures show

HFCL’s FY2024-25 annual report describes an optical fiber and optical fiber cable business alongside telecom and defense equipment and network solutions. Its wider mix means that a company-wide order book or financial result cannot be treated as a measure of fiber performance alone. See HFCL’s annual reports.

Read growth expectations as expectations

HFCL’s FY25 results release said the company expected substantial growth in optical fiber and optical fiber cable revenue during FY26 as domestic and global demand increased. Because this was a forward-looking statement issued in May 2025, it does not by itself establish that the projected growth occurred. See HFCL’s FY25 results release.

Capacity figures need their dates and status

An excerpt from HFCL’s Q3 FY26 results release reported optical fiber cable capacity of 30.5 million fiber-kilometres as of December 31, 2025, and planned capacity of 42.3 million, with completion scheduled by June 2026. The excerpt does not confirm that the planned capacity was completed, nor does installed or planned capacity establish actual production or utilization. See HFCL’s Q3 FY26 results release.

HFCL’s FY2024-25 annual report also described muted OFC demand, margin pressure from newly launched telecom products, slower customer offtake in EPC, capacity investments, and efforts to expand its portfolio. Those are management’s reported operating context and plans, not independent proof of current utilization or realized results. The report also discusses a board-approved enhancement of intermittent bonded ribbon cable manufacturing capacity.

Can you compare their order books?

Only with the dates and scope made explicit. HFCL reported an order book of ₹10,480 crore as of June 30, 2025, in its FY2024-25 annual report; a later HFCL Q3 FY26 release excerpt gives ₹11,125 crore as of December 31, 2025. STL reported an open order book of ₹18,618 crore as of June 30, 2026. These dates are not aligned, and the figures are company-wide rather than fiber-only. They should not be presented as a same-day ranking or as revenue.

An order book indicates orders reported as open under a company’s disclosures; it does not say when or whether every order will convert into recognized revenue. Without aligned reporting dates and equivalent segment breakdowns, the numbers cannot settle which company’s fiber operation is bigger or performing better.

Which company is better for a particular question?

If you are comparing strategic emphasis

STL’s Q1 FY27 release makes AI data-center connectivity unusually visible through Neuralis and reported hyperscaler and data-center-related wins. HFCL’s disclosed mix more explicitly spans fiber and cable, telecom equipment, defense equipment, and network solutions. That distinction describes the cited company disclosures; it is not a judgment about product quality or future returns.

If you are comparing financial performance

The figures available here do not support a like-for-like winner. STL’s Q1 FY27 revenue and EBITDA are company-wide, while the cited HFCL figures are from different reporting dates and do not provide an aligned comparison of fiber-segment results. A useful financial comparison would require matching periods, accounting scope, and segment-level revenue and profitability for both companies.

If you are comparing manufacturing scale

HFCL’s December 2025 release excerpt provides a dated capacity figure and a separate planned figure. The cited STL release does not give a comparable fiber-cable capacity and utilization measure. Capacity alone would not answer how much product either company actually made or sold, so the available disclosures do not establish a manufacturing-scale leader.

What this comparison does not establish

  • Market-share leadership: the cited company disclosures do not provide a comparable independent market-share measure.
  • Fiber-specific margins or profitability: the reported STL revenue and EBITDA are company-wide, and an aligned segment-level comparison is not provided here.
  • Current HFCL capacity completion or utilization: the 42.3 million fiber-kilometre figure was planned, with completion scheduled by June 2026; the cited excerpt does not confirm completion or actual utilization.
  • A stock recommendation: differences in product mix and dated company disclosures are not enough to conclude that either company is the better investment.
