Can you use Community at work?
It depends on the organization and the activity. Microsoft’s pricing information says non-enterprise organizations may use Community for up to five users in other usage scenarios. Microsoft defines an enterprise organization as one with more than 250 PCs or more than US$1 million in annual revenue. In an enterprise organization, Community use is limited to classroom learning, academic research, and contributing to open-source projects. Microsoft pricing Microsoft product comparison
The five-user allowance is not a general rule that every organization with five or fewer developers qualifies: the organization must also fall outside Microsoft’s enterprise definition, and the use must fit the applicable terms. Check the current license for edge cases before deploying Community at work.

How to choose
- Check license eligibility first. If you are using Visual Studio at work, confirm the organization’s status, number of users, and activity against Microsoft’s current Community terms.
- Identify a concrete reason to pay. Look for a Professional-specific feature, subscription benefit, purchase format, or LTSC option you will actually use.
- Compare the offer, not just the edition name. Standalone, monthly, and annual subscription purchases have different prices and benefits; review Microsoft’s current terms for the relevant region.
- Choose Community if it covers your work. There is no need to pay for Professional simply because you are coding professionally or working in a team; eligibility and required capabilities determine the choice.
