If your U.S. passport is lost or stolen in Brazil, report it promptly and contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate to apply in person for a replacement. Prepare a passport photo, identification, citizenship evidence if available, your itinerary, Form DS-11, and payment. If you need to travel soon, tell consular staff: they may be able to issue a limited-validity emergency passport, but timing and local procedures must be confirmed with the post.
What to do first if your passport is lost or stolen
- Report a valid passport lost or stolen. The State Department says to report it immediately to help protect against identity theft. Its online reporting process cancels the passport within one business day and sends confirmation. Once canceled, it cannot be used for international travel, even if you later find it. Do not report an expired passport as lost or stolen. See the State Department’s reporting guidance.
- Contact a U.S. embassy or consulate in Brazil. The State Department says you must apply in person at a consular post. Tell the post where you are, when you hope to travel, and whether your trip is urgent. Confirm which post to contact and how to arrange an appointment before traveling there; appointment availability, jurisdiction, walk-in policies, and local service hours can vary and are not established by the general guidance.
- Prepare the application materials. Use the checklist below and bring whatever supporting documents you can obtain.
Reporting the loss does not itself replace the passport. You may also report a loss while applying with Form DS-11, but the State Department says cancellation that way can take several weeks. Use the online reporting process if you need immediate cancellation.

What to bring to your passport appointment
The State Department’s general guidance for replacing a passport abroad lists these items:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- One passport photo, 2 x 2 inches (5 x 5 cm).
- Identification, such as a driver’s license or an expired passport.
- Evidence of U.S. citizenship, such as a birth certificate or a photocopy of the missing passport.
- Your airline or train itinerary.
- Form DS-11, completed with details about where and when the passport was lost or stolen.
- Passport fees, paid as directed by the consular post.
If you filed a police report, bring a copy. The State Department says police reports are not mandatory under its general abroad guidance, though one can help document the circumstances. Include a complete account of the loss or theft on DS-11; if information is missing, the Department may pause the application and request Form DS-64. Consular staff will still do their best to help if you cannot provide every document. Read the State Department’s lost-or-stolen passport guidance for travelers abroad.

Can you get an emergency passport in Brazil?
Possibly. If a regular passport cannot be issued in time for your travel, consular staff may be able to issue an emergency passport valid for up to one year. It can be exchanged for a full-validity passport after the trip. The State Department’s general abroad guidance says full-validity passports last 10 years for adults and 5 years for children under 16; the appropriate document for an individual case is determined by consular staff.
| Document outcome | When it may fit | Validity in State Department guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Full-validity replacement | There is enough time for regular issuance, as determined by the consular post. | 10 years for adults; 5 years for children under 16. |
| Emergency passport | Travel is urgent and a regular passport cannot be issued in time; availability depends on the case and post. | Up to 1 year; it may be exchanged for a full-validity passport after the trip. |
The State Department says most replacement passports abroad are issued the next business day, but that is general guidance—not a Brazil-specific promise or a guarantee for a particular traveler. Most embassies and consulates cannot issue passports on weekends or holidays. After-hours duty officers can assist with emergencies, including urgent travel and life-or-death situations; contact the relevant post to confirm what to do locally.

Confirm Brazil-specific appointments, fees, and payment
Do not assume that a U.S. domestic fee chart or domestic application process applies at a consular post in Brazil. The State Department’s general abroad guidance says replacement passports generally cost the same as other passports, but the amount and payment instructions for your Brazilian post need to be confirmed directly with it. Ask about the current fee, accepted payment method and currency, any applicable waiver, appointment availability, and which post serves your location.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe State Department’s March 2026 domestic fee chart lists a $150 file-search fee in its domestic application context; it does not establish that amount as a fee payable in Brazil. The general abroad guidance says applicants unable to show citizenship evidence may ask for a free file search to help obtain an emergency passport. It also says qualifying victims of serious crime or disaster who cannot pay may be eligible for a free limited-validity emergency passport. Check with the consular post about whether either provision applies to your circumstances. View the State Department’s April 2026 fee chart.
