Neither capability by itself guarantees that a complex Word template will look or behave exactly the same in another editor.

Writer is worth considering when you want to make your own template, reuse it for recurring documents, or choose a default template for new documents. LibreOffice’s help describes a template as a document containing formatting styles and other content for reuse, and explains how to set a default. If you need to open a DOTX file without Word, ONLYOFFICE’s format documentation is relevant: it identifies DOTX as a Word Open XML document-template format and lists DOCX and DOTX as download formats for supported file inputs. That establishes documented format support, not exact compatibility with every feature in a particular template. Check the supported-format documentation and test your own file before relying on it.
Will another editor preserve a Word template’s formatting?
It depends on both the file format you save to and the features the template uses. Microsoft Support says OpenDocument Text (.odt) files are compatible with Word and open-source applications such as OpenOffice and LibreOffice, but warns that formatting may differ and some Word features are unavailable. Its guidance applies to Word for Microsoft 365 and Word 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2024. Read Microsoft’s ODT and DOCX compatibility notes.
Microsoft’s comparison identifies specific limitations in the described Word-to-ODT workflow: Track Changes and document protection are not supported, while content controls are partially supported. It also says AutoText entries in a Word template (.dotx) are not saved in the ODT version when a template containing them is saved as ODT. If those features are essential, do not treat a successful open as proof that the template remains fully functional.

- Keep an untouched original. Make a copy of the template before opening or converting it, so you can return to the source if the layout or features change.
- Open and edit a representative copy. Use the editor and file format you expect to use in your actual workflow. Check page breaks, styles, headers and footers, tables, fields, comments, and any form controls that matter to the document.
- Save in the format collaborators need. Do not assume that opening a file proves it will behave the same after saving or conversion.
- Reopen and inspect the result. Check the edited document and, if you will reuse it, the saved template in the software recipients will use. Confirm that the critical layout and features remain intact before adopting the workflow.
Choosing between the two
Choose LibreOffice Writer when reusable styles, custom templates, and a configurable default template are central to your work. Choose ONLYOFFICE when a ready-made library or documented DOTX support is more useful. For either editor, evaluate the actual file you depend on: format support is not the same as a guarantee that every Word-specific feature or layout will transfer unchanged.
