What to Do When Your First Pull Request Gets No Response

No response to your first pull request? Check the project’s rules and PR timeline, then follow up politely in the same public thread after a reasonable wait.

If your first pull request has received no response, check the project’s contribution instructions and the PR timeline, then—if no review is underway—leave one brief, courteous follow-up in the same public thread. There is no universal review deadline: project guidance takes precedence, while general advice ranges from waiting more than a week to waiting weeks.

Check the project’s process and the PR timeline

Start with the repository’s CONTRIBUTING file and any linked contribution or review instructions. Projects set their own process, so follow any stated review expectations or directions about requesting feedback. GitHub’s contribution guidance also recommends checking a project’s conventions and contribution requirements.

Then inspect the pull request’s conversation before posting. The review discussion appears in the PR timeline, where you can follow comments and see whether a conversation still needs a response; see GitHub’s review documentation. A comment or other activity may mean someone is already considering the change, even if no formal review has arrived.

How long should you wait?

There is no platform-wide response deadline in the guidance cited here. The Open Source Guide says that after more than a week without a response, it is fair to ask for a review in the same thread. GitHub Docs takes a more conservative approach, advising a polite follow-up when a pull request has gone unaddressed for weeks.

Guidance Suggested wait How to interpret it
Open Source Guide More than a week General etiquette guidance, not a promised response time.
GitHub Docs Weeks General advice, not a platform-enforced deadline.

Use the project’s stated expectations if it has them. Otherwise, choose a reasonable interval rather than treating either suggestion as a service-level promise. These sources do not quantify how project size, queue length, or maintainer availability affects response time.

Send one concise follow-up in the same thread

If the PR still appears unanswered after a reasonable wait, leave a short, courteous comment on that pull request. For example:

Hi, I’m checking whether this change is ready for review. I’m happy to revise it to fit the project’s conventions. Thanks for your time.

Keep the request focused on whether feedback is available; avoid demanding a decision or implying that maintainers owe you an immediate response. GitHub Docs recommends following up politely and says not to directly mention maintainers’ handles. The Open Source Guide likewise recommends asking in the existing thread and cautions against private outreach. Do not tag or privately message an individual unless the project’s own instructions explicitly ask contributors to do so.

If feedback arrives, continue in the existing pull request

Reply professionally and address the requested changes in the same PR rather than opening a duplicate just to submit revisions. Keeping the discussion and updates together makes it easier to follow the contribution and review; GitHub’s contribution guidance recommends continuing in the existing pull request when changes are requested.

If the reminder also gets no response

Silence can continue even on an active project, and it does not by itself mean the contribution was rejected. The Open Source Guide notes that a polite reminder may also go unanswered. After one follow-up, decide whether you are comfortable waiting longer or would rather spend your time elsewhere. You can leave the PR available for a later review; there is no need to escalate to private messages or repeated pings unless the project’s process calls for them.
