No. Don’t use eye drops after the expiration date printed on the package. The date marks how long the medicine is known to retain its strength, quality, and purity when stored as labeled; after it, the drops may be less effective or risky. Because eye drops must be sterile, there is no evidence-based safe grace period for a bottle kept at home.
Why the expiration date matters for eye drops
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) explains that a drug’s expiration date covers the period in which it is known to remain stable—retaining its strength, quality, and purity under the storage conditions on its label. The FDA cautions that expired medicines may be less effective or risky. Those principles apply to eye drops; they do not establish that a bottle is safe for any set time after its printed date.

Sterility is an additional concern. The FDA says, “Any drug used in the eyes must be sterile to reduce the risk of infection.” A bottle’s dropper tip can become contaminated if it touches an eye or another surface. The date alone does not tell you whether a particular bottle is contaminated, but neither appearance nor smell establishes that expired drops are safe to use.

Printed expiration date versus after-opening instructions
The expiration date printed on the package and a discard instruction after opening are separate directions. Check the exact product label and follow both. Do not assume every bottle should be discarded after the same number of days.
- Single-use containers: The FDA’s OTC ophthalmic drug monograph says not to reuse a single-use container and to discard it once opened.
- Multidose bottles: Instructions can vary by product. Follow that product’s label for use after opening, storage, and disposal.
For example, the FDA-approved 2025 label for VEVYE says, “After opening, VEVYE can be used until the expiration date on the bottle.” That instruction is specific to VEVYE and does not apply to other eye drops. Its label also says not to let the dropper tip touch the eye or any other surface.

- Stop using the expired bottle, even if it looks normal or has been stored carefully. FDA’s expiration-date guidance does not provide a general extension for a consumer-held product.
- Follow the product’s disposal instructions and local medicine-disposal guidance. The FDA identifies medicine take-back locations and mail-back options as preferred ways to dispose of expired or unwanted medicines.
- If you need replacement drops or are unsure which product is appropriate, ask a pharmacist or an eye-care professional.

If you already used expired eye drops
Using an expired dose does not mean harm has occurred, and the FDA materials do not establish that every expired bottle is contaminated. Stop using the drops. The FDA advises contacting a health professional and stopping use if you experience discharge from the eye, pain, changes in vision, or discomfort. For urgent or severe symptoms, seek prompt medical care.
