Higher Treasury yields can coincide with tighter financial conditions that curb appetite for risky assets, including Bitcoin—but the evidence does not show that every rise in yields mechanically pushes Bitcoin lower. The relationship is conditional, and it runs alongside a second link: stablecoin demand can increase issuers’ purchases of short-term Treasury securities, nudging bill yields down while crypto valuations rise.
How do Treasury yields affect Bitcoin?
Treasury yields matter to Bitcoin mainly as part of the wider financial backdrop. When monetary policy tightens and financial conditions become less supportive of risk-taking, crypto valuations can weaken. That is a relationship between policy conditions and a broad crypto-market measure—not a fixed exchange rate between a Treasury yield and Bitcoin’s price.

An International Monetary Fund working paper published in 2023 found that a one-percentage-point increase in the federal funds rate led to a persistent 0.15-standard-deviation decline in its crypto factor over the following two weeks. The estimate describes the paper’s response to a monetary-policy shock; it is not an estimate of how much Bitcoin falls after a one-point rise in a Treasury yield. The IMF paper also describes its working papers as work in progress whose views are those of the authors, not necessarily those of the IMF, its Executive Board or management.

When financing conditions tighten, investors may become less willing to hold assets whose prices can fluctuate sharply. The IMF’s finding supports this risk-taking channel for crypto markets. It does not isolate a Treasury-yield change as the cause, nor does it say that Bitcoin must fall whenever yields rise.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Does Bitcoin fall when interest rates rise?
Not as a dependable rule. The cited evidence points to an average response of a broader crypto factor after a federal funds rate shock, not a guaranteed Bitcoin move after any rate or yield change. Market expectations, the source of the yield move and conditions specific to crypto can differ from one episode to another; the studies here do not supply a Bitcoin price forecast.
The IMF’s 2023 paper found that its common crypto factor explained 80 percent of variation in crypto prices. It also reported that this factor’s correlation with equity markets increased alongside institutional investor entry. That pattern is consistent with crypto sometimes moving with other risk assets, rather than reliably hedging them in every market environment. The study examines crypto prices broadly, so its common factor should not be mistaken for Bitcoin alone.

How stablecoin demand can affect Treasury yields
The direction of influence can also run from crypto-related demand toward Treasury markets. Stablecoin issuers hold reserve assets, including short-term Treasury securities. When stablecoin demand grows and issuers’ Treasury-bill holdings increase, that additional demand can put downward pressure on bill yields. This is a different question from whether tighter monetary policy affects crypto risk-taking.
A 2026 Bank for International Settlements working paper, based on daily data from January 2021 through March 2026, estimated that a $3.5 billion stablecoin inflow lowered three-month Treasury bill yields by 0.71 basis points on impact and by as much as 4 basis points within ten days. The authors found limited spillovers to longer maturities. These are estimated historical responses, not a forecast of the effect of every future inflow. Read the BIS working-paper series.

How Treasury-bill demand can spill back into crypto valuations
Stablecoin-related flows may link the two markets in both directions. An International Monetary Fund working paper published in 2026 reports that a shock associated with a 1 percent rise in the combined market capitalization of USDC and USDT lowered the one-month Treasury bill yield by about 1.9 basis points at its trough, while crypto valuations increased gradually. The authors report robustness checks that substitute Bitcoin’s price for their broader crypto index, but the reported valuation response is gradual and the result remains a study estimate—not a prediction of Bitcoin’s next move. See the IMF working-paper series.

| Evidence | Shock and measure | Estimated response | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| IMF, 2023 | One-percentage-point rise in the federal funds rate; crypto factor | Persistent decline of 0.15 standard deviations over the subsequent two weeks | Broad crypto factor, not a Treasury-yield-to-Bitcoin coefficient |
| BIS, 2026 | $3.5 billion stablecoin inflow; three-month Treasury bill yield | Down 0.71 basis points on impact and up to 4 basis points within ten days | Daily data from January 2021 through March 2026; limited longer-maturity spillovers |
| IMF, 2026 | Stablecoin shock associated with 1 percent growth in combined USDC and USDT capitalization; one-month Treasury bill yield | Down approximately 1.9 basis points at the trough, while crypto valuations rose gradually | Broader crypto index, with robustness checks using Bitcoin price |
Read these findings as evidence about distinct channels, not as interchangeable estimates. The 2023 result concerns monetary tightening and crypto risk-taking; the 2026 results concern stablecoin-related shocks, short-term Treasury yields and crypto-market responses. None establishes a universal rule for the direction or size of Bitcoin’s move when a Treasury yield changes.
