How to Fix a Computer That Won’t Boot After a RAM Upgrade

Troubleshoot a computer that will not boot after a RAM upgrade, from memory training and reseating to module tests and compatibility checks.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your computer stopped starting after a RAM upgrade, first distinguish a temporary black screen during memory training from a persistent failure. Give a newly changed system time to train, then check module seating and the system’s recommended slots, test one module at a time, and verify that the memory is supported by your exact computer or motherboard. The right procedure varies by model, so use its manual for diagnostic lights, slot layouts, CMOS resets, and BIOS recovery.

First, identify what “won’t boot” means

Notice exactly what happens when you press the power button. A computer with no power is different from one that powers on but shows no display, reports a DRAM error, fails its power-on self-test (POST), or reaches firmware but cannot load the operating system. Record any diagnostic light, beep, or displayed code. Interpret it using the computer or motherboard manual; indicators and codes are not universal. Intel’s no-boot troubleshooting wizard includes checking memory-related POST codes and the board’s installation guide.

Try these steps in order

1. Allow time for memory training

After a memory configuration change, the system may show a temporary black screen while firmware optimizes memory settings. Kingston advises leaving the computer powered on for at least 10 minutes. If it has not progressed, power-cycle and try again; if the black screen returns, allow an additional five minutes. This is a wait-and-check step, not proof that every no-display condition is normal. If the system remains stuck, continue with the hardware checks. See Kingston’s memory support guidance.

2. Shut down, disconnect power, and reseat the RAM

  1. Shut the computer down. Disconnect it from power before opening the case; follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions for your model.
  2. Use the computer or motherboard manual to locate the RAM slots and identify which slots to use for your configuration.
  3. Remove and reinstall each module, making sure it is aligned correctly and fully seated. Do not force a module into a slot.
  4. Close the system and reconnect power, then try starting it again.

Correct seating and slot placement are system-specific. Intel and Kingston both advise checking installation instructions and reseating memory: see Intel’s troubleshooting wizard and Kingston’s support guidance.

CORSAIR Vengeance LPX DDR4 RAM 32GB (2x16GB) Up to 3200MHz CL16-20-20-38 1.35V Intel XMP AMD EXPO Computer Memory – Black (CMK32GX4M2E3200C16)
  • Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
  • Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
  • VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
  • A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
  • A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds

3. Test one module at a time

If you installed more than one module, power down and disconnect power before changing the configuration. Try one module in the recommended single-module slot, then test the other module in that same slot. If needed, test supported slots according to the manual. Change only one variable at a time and note which combinations start the computer.

Intel recommends testing modules individually and available slots; MSI likewise suggests trying one module to help isolate memory problems. A failure pattern can narrow the possibilities, but it does not by itself prove whether the module, slot, CPU memory controller, or compatibility is at fault. Use the relevant manuals, such as Intel’s wizard and MSI’s no-display troubleshooting guide.

  • Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
  • G.SKILL RipjawsV Series DDR4 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F4-3200C16D-16GVKB
  • Non-ECC, DDR4 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
  • Includes JEDEC default profile, and Intel XMP memory overclock profile
  • Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.

4. Verify compatibility against your exact system

Check the computer or motherboard documentation for the supported memory type, module capacities, total capacity, and permitted configurations. Also check its qualified vendor list (QVL), if available, and any stated speed, timing, voltage, or ECC requirements. AMD recommends checking whether memory appears on the motherboard QVL and is validated for its rated performance and features. A module’s absence from a QVL does not, by itself, establish that it is incompatible.

Use modules from the same matched kit where possible, and install them in the recommended slots. AMD’s memory troubleshooting guidance explains the role of QVL validation and matching modules. Do not assume that memory which fits physically is supported by your system.

5. Reset CMOS only if the manual directs you

If the computer still cannot POST, a CMOS reset may restore default BIOS settings and resolve a problem caused by a previous configuration. The reset method varies by model, so identify the exact motherboard or computer and follow its instructions, with power disconnected as directed. A reset removes customized BIOS settings; you may need to configure them again. Consult your model’s instructions and the relevant MSI troubleshooting guidance rather than trying an undocumented procedure.

6. Consider a BIOS update only as a model-specific remedy

A motherboard vendor may recommend a BIOS update for a memory compatibility issue. Check the exact model’s support page and follow its update and recovery procedure; do not flash firmware without identifying the system and confirming the safe method. A failed or unsuitable update can create additional problems. AMD says a vendor-recommended update can address some memory compatibility issues, while Intel and Kingston direct users to their motherboard or computer manufacturer for guidance: AMD, Intel, and Kingston.

7. Check connections or seek service

If reseating the memory did not help, check whether a cable was disturbed while the system was open. Kingston recommends checking internal cable connections after reseating. Intel lists other possible components—including the motherboard, power supply, and video card—when memory troubleshooting does not resolve a no-boot problem. If you are unsure about opening the computer or the checks above do not restore startup, contact the computer or motherboard manufacturer or a qualified repair service.

When to replace the RAM

Consider a replacement only after checking the supported configuration and testing the installed modules. There is no universally suitable RAM kit for this problem: the correct choice depends on the exact computer or motherboard. Compare the supported memory generation and type, capacity per module and total, module count, speeds and timings, voltage, and ECC requirements where applicable. Prefer a matched kit validated for the system; do not combine separately purchased modules on the assumption that matching headline specifications guarantee compatibility.
