An eSIM lets a compatible phone download and use a mobile carrier’s SIM profile without inserting a plastic card. It does not provide free service or guarantee coverage: you still need a plan from a carrier or travel provider, and your connection depends on the networks available where you are.
How does an eSIM work?
An eSIM is a digital SIM profile and the system used to provision it to a device. The subscription is still supplied by a mobile operator; the difference is that the profile can be delivered remotely instead of arriving on a removable card. Apple defines an eSIM as “an industry-standard digital SIM that allows you to activate a mobile plan from your network provider without having to use a physical SIM.”

In the consumer model described by the GSMA, the operator prepares the subscription profile. Your device’s Local Profile Assistant (LPA) helps retrieve and manage that profile, while the embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card (eUICC) stores and operates it. A QR code may direct the phone to the operator’s SM-DP+ provisioning system to download the profile securely. Providers can also use other activation flows, so scanning a QR code is common but not the only method.

Once installed and activated, the profile lets the device connect to the relevant operator’s network, subject to the plan and local coverage. In practice, travelers usually handle setup through the phone’s settings, a QR code, or a provider app; they do not manage the carrier’s provisioning servers.

Can I use an eSIM while traveling?
Yes, if your device and chosen provider support eSIM and you can activate a plan for your destination. Apple says worldwide service providers offer prepaid data plans for use in over 190 countries and regions; that describes the breadth of provider offerings, not coverage by every plan in every destination.
Before buying, check the destination and the plan terms rather than relying on the word “international.” A travel eSIM is a way to install a subscription profile, not a way to bypass carrier rules or create service where a provider has no network arrangement.
Check your phone before buying a plan
Confirm eSIM and regional support
Device support varies by model and region. For iPhone, Apple’s travel guidance lists iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later, plus an eSIM-supporting provider. Some eSIM-only iPhone models in some regions may activate without Wi-Fi; in most cases, Wi-Fi or a hotspot is needed during setup. These are Apple-specific requirements, not universal rules for every phone. Apple also cautions that regional model restrictions apply and recommends checking supported network bands for the country where you will use the device.

Check whether the phone is unlocked
If you want to use a provider other than your home carrier, Apple says your iPhone must be unlocked. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > About and check Carrier Lock; an unlocked phone displays “No SIM restrictions.” Confirm the status before purchasing a third-party plan. If your current phone already supports eSIM and is unlocked, you do not need to replace it.
Choose the kind of travel connection that fits your trip
There are three common routes: keep using your home carrier’s roaming plan, buy a local operator plan, or use a prepaid data plan from a worldwide provider. A local provider may offer a local phone number, but purchase rules vary; a country or plan may require identification, residency, or local financial documentation.
| Option | What to check | Potential fit |
|---|---|---|
| Home-carrier roaming | Destination coverage, roaming charges, data allowance, and whether voice and SMS are included; review the carrier’s terms. | Useful when you want to keep your existing line and your carrier’s roaming terms suit the trip. |
| Local operator plan | Coverage where you will be, validity, data, voice/SMS or local-number availability, and identity or residency requirements. | Worth considering when a local plan’s terms and purchase requirements match your stay. |
| Worldwide provider plan | Which countries or regions that specific plan covers, its data allowance and duration, and whether it includes voice/SMS or data only. | Can be convenient for travel across destinations, but coverage and allowances depend on the individual plan. |
Compare the total cost along with coverage, data allowance, validity period, voice and SMS, and purchase requirements. There is no universally best choice established for every traveler; the answer depends on the itinerary and the terms available for it.

Keep your regular number or switch lines?
On supported iPhone models, you can use your home line and a travel eSIM together and choose which line supplies mobile data. This can let you keep access to your regular line while using the travel plan for data. However, leaving the home line active may still trigger roaming charges under your home carrier’s terms. Check its roaming and data settings before departure, and make a deliberate choice about which line handles mobile data.

Does an eSIM avoid roaming charges?
No. Remote provisioning changes how a SIM profile reaches a device; it does not replace roaming as a carrier service. The GSMA’s 2018 white paper states: “Remote SIM Provisioning will not replace the roaming services provided by operators.” Apple Support likewise says, “International roaming with an eSIM works just like roaming with a physical SIM.” If you use your home plan abroad, roaming terms still apply; a separate travel plan is a different subscription, not a guarantee of free or universal connectivity.
