To get a more useful answer from generative AI, state what you want done, why you need it, what information the assistant should use, and what the finished answer should look like. Then refine the response if anything important is missing. There is no magic wording formula: clear, relevant instructions help steer an answer, but they do not guarantee it will be correct.
What should you include in a prompt?
A prompt is the input that starts or continues an interaction with a language model. A good one gives the assistant enough direction to act without burying the request in irrelevant detail. OpenAI’s prompting guidance recommends clarity, specificity, and relevant context. For a typical request, consider these parts:

- Task and goal: Say what to do and what the result is for. “Summarize this report for a project update” is more actionable than “Tell me about this.”
- Context: Provide the material, background, definitions, or constraints the assistant needs but cannot infer. Include details that could change the answer; leave out unrelated background.
- Audience and purpose: Explain who will use or read the result, and what they need from it.
- Output: Name the format, tone, and approximate length when they matter. You might ask for a short email, a comparison table, or a plain-language explanation.
- Limits and priorities: Identify must-haves, exclusions, or trade-offs. For example, prioritize accuracy over brevity, or avoid jargon.
- Check: When useful, ask the assistant to flag assumptions, uncertainty, or information it lacks.
These are prompts to consider, not mandatory fields. OpenAI’s Help Center advises users to focus on their objectives and use natural, goal-driven language rather than trying to find perfect phrasing: How do I create a good prompt for an AI model?

A practical prompt template
Use this checklist as a starting point, and omit anything that does not apply:
#1 Best Overall
Task: Do [specific action].
Context: Use [relevant facts, text, or background].
Audience and purpose: This is for [reader or use].
Output: Return [format, length, and tone].
Constraints and priorities: Include [must-haves]; avoid [likely issue]; prioritize [criterion].
Check: Flag assumptions, uncertainty, or missing information where relevant.
For example: “Turn the notes below into a concise project update for a nontechnical manager. Keep confirmed facts separate from open questions, use bullets, and flag any missing information rather than guessing.” The notes and instructions are useful because they tell the assistant what to make, who it is for, how to present it, and where not to fill gaps with assumptions.

How much context is enough?
Include context that helps determine the answer: the source text to summarize, the audience’s level of expertise, relevant dates or constraints, or the definitions behind unfamiliar terms. If a detail would not change the task or result, it may not belong in the prompt. OpenAI Academy’s prompting guidance recommends outlining the task, adding helpful context, and describing the ideal output; its examples also show how stating priorities can guide the answer.

For example, ask it to summarize only the text you provided, distinguish the source’s claims from its own explanation, or identify questions the text does not answer. This helps set the scope, but you should still verify important claims.

Should you use one prompt or several?
Choose based on the task, not a rigid rule. A straightforward request with closely related instructions can usually be handled in one prompt. Break a complex assignment into focused prompts or follow-ups when separate stages would give you more control—for example, first asking for an outline, then revising the structure, then drafting one section.
OpenAI’s Help Center recommends breaking complex requests into smaller, focused prompts and refining through follow-ups. OpenAI Academy’s prompting page, last updated September 4, 2026, also notes that newer reasoning capabilities can make it practical to consolidate related context and instructions. That is model-specific guidance, not a rule for every assistant or task. If you need to inspect or adjust intermediate decisions, separate steps; if the requirements fit together cleanly, give them together.
Rank #4
How do you improve the first answer?
Treat the first response as a draft when the task calls for refinement. Give specific feedback tied to your goal instead of repeating the entire original request. For example, ask for a shorter version, a more technical explanation, a different structure, or a clearer separation between facts and assumptions.

- Identify the gap. Say exactly what is missing, unclear, too long, or out of scope.
- Ask for a targeted revision. For instance: “Keep the same facts, but reorganize this as a three-step checklist for a beginner.”
- Verify consequential claims. Check important facts against reliable sources, especially when the answer may affect a decision or be published.
Clearer prompting can improve direction, not establish truth. Do not treat confidence, detail, or a request to “check carefully” as proof that an answer is accurate.

What should developers know about prompt construction?
For people building applications with language models, prompt design has additional implementation concerns. OpenAI’s API documentation discusses organizing instructions and context, placing instructions, using examples, and experimenting with evaluation in deployed workflows. Those practices belong to development and testing; they are distinct from the basic consumer-chat checklist above.
A practical example: prompting for reporting
For journalism work, a prompt can specify the reporting role, task, context, output, limits, and checks. OpenAI Academy’s July 7, 2026 journalism training resource uses that framework and encourages surfacing uncertainty and missing facts while keeping editorial verification central. It is a role-specific example, not a universal formal standard. A reporter might ask for a summary of supplied interview notes, request that direct evidence be separated from unanswered questions, and verify every published claim independently.
