One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchChoose a QLC SSD when you want high capacity for data you will mostly read and rarely rewrite. Choose TLC as the safer starting point for frequent or sustained writes, write-sensitive work, or a larger endurance budget. Neither label guarantees a particular drive’s speed or lifespan: compare the exact model’s endurance rating, warranty, sustained-write behavior, capacity, interface, and price.
What QLC and TLC mean
TLC NAND stores three bits per flash cell; QLC stores four. That extra bit gives QLC greater cell density, which can help SSD makers build capacity-oriented products. The tradeoff is greater sensitivity to cell degradation and longer programming behavior, according to manufacturer descriptions. Those traits do not by themselves determine a complete SSD’s performance: its controller, firmware, capacity, and workload matter too.

Micron describes QLC as offering “greater densities in a smaller footprint” and positioning it for read-centric applications. KIOXIA reports a 33% QLC cell-density advantage over TLC; that is a cell-level comparison, not a promise that every QLC SSD provides 33% more user-addressable capacity.

Which type fits your workload?
QLC: mostly-read data and capacity-led storage
QLC is a strong candidate for large media libraries, archives, backups, and other data that is written initially and then read more often than it is changed. It is not limited to archival use: some non-latency-sensitive mixed and enterprise workloads may also suit QLC. Judge a particular product by its full specifications rather than assuming every QLC drive behaves alike.

TLC: frequent writes and write-sensitive work
TLC is generally the safer direction for frequent data changes, demanding mixed workloads, sustained writes, or situations where write response and endurance matter. This is a broad workload tendency, not a guarantee that any TLC drive will outperform any QLC drive. Model-specific performance figures and test conditions matter.
Gaming and everyday use
For ordinary desktop use or a game library, NAND type alone is not enough to decide. Consider how often you install, update, record, or move large amounts of data, and whether the drive must sustain writes without a noticeable slowdown. If the drive will mostly hold games or other files that are read after installation, QLC may fit; if your use involves frequent large writes, give TLC and the exact model’s sustained-write behavior more weight.

How to compare two specific SSDs
- Estimate your write pattern. Consider how much data you write and how often you overwrite it. Mostly-read data after initial writes points toward QLC; frequent or sustained writes point toward TLC.
- Check write behavior, not only peak speed. If write response or consistency matters, compare the candidate drives’ sustained-write information and relevant performance figures. Peak sequential speeds alone may not describe behavior under a long or repeated write load.
- Compare endurance at the capacity you plan to buy. Look for TBW (terabytes written) or DWPD (drive writes per day) and the warranty. Estimate whether the rating fits your expected writes over the intended service life. TBW is a drive rating for total data written, not a universal lifespan guarantee.
- Compare capacity and local price. Check the actual price per usable terabyte for the same capacity and market. QLC’s density can make high-capacity storage attractive, but there is no established universal consumer price premium for TLC; prices depend on the products and market being compared.
- Confirm compatibility and operating conditions. Verify interface, form factor, supported capacity, cooling and thermal conditions, warranty, and any platform-specific requirements against the complete product specification.
Endurance depends on the model, not just the NAND label
Do not assume every TLC SSD has a higher rated write budget than every QLC SSD. Compare the precise model and capacity you are considering, then relate its TBW or DWPD rating to your expected workload and the warranty.

Should you pay extra for TLC?
Compare actual models at the same capacity and in the same market rather than paying a presumed premium based only on NAND type. TLC may be worth choosing when its write behavior or endurance rating better matches your work. If your workload is read-heavy and a QLC model meets your capacity, endurance, warranty, and performance needs, paying more for TLC may not provide a useful advantage. Product prices change, so use current listings and the exact specifications.
